Beyond the Chair

This book was written in a dialysis chair.

Not metaphorically. Not as a creative device. Literally — sitting in a reclining chair, connected to a machine that was cleaning my blood three times a week, four hours each session — I wrote this book.

Because the people I sit beside in those chairs needed something I could not find anywhere else to give them.

Beyond the Chair was written for:

• The dialysis patient who is still trying to figure out who they are now that this diagnosis has changed everything.
• The caregiver sitting in the waiting room wondering if there is anything left for them when they get home.
• The person who just received a life-changing diagnosis and does not yet know how to hold it.
• The family member who loves someone in the chair and does not know what to say.
• The medical professional who sees the human being beneath the patient every single day.

And for anyone — with or without kidney disease — who has ever sat in a place they did not choose and wondered: is there a life beyond this?
