Don't Know Who You Are
When the mirror shows a stranger and you don't recognize who you've become — Jesus meets you at the Table. Your identity is not in what you've lost. It's hidden with Christ in God.

Friend, if you are here because you don't recognize yourself anymore — if caregiving, crisis, or just the wearing down of years has stripped away the person you used to be — you are standing on holy ground. The identity crisis is not the end of your story. It may be the very threshold where God reveals who you really are beneath all the roles you play.
Your life is hidden with Christ in God. That means the truest thing about you cannot be taken by a diagnosis, a job loss, an empty nest, or the exhaustion of caring for everyone else. The truest thing about you is that you belong to Him. Everything else flows from that.
You may not know who you are right now — but God does. And at this Table, He reminds you.
Why This Communion Matters
Identity crises often come during transitions — becoming a caregiver, losing a career, receiving a diagnosis, entering a new season of life. The identity built on the old season collapses, and before the new one forms, there's a terrifying gap where you don't know who you are. The enemy exploits this gap, whispering: "You're nothing now. You've lost yourself. The best is behind you."
But at this Table, you anchor your identity in something that never changes. The bread and the cup declare who you are: forgiven, loved, adopted into God's family, hidden in Christ. These truths do not shift with your circumstances. They do not erode with time. They are eternal.
Communion is where you stop looking at the mirror and start looking at the cross. The cross tells you who you are more truthfully than any reflection ever could.
Primary Scripture
"For you died, and your life is now hidden with Christ in God. When Christ, who is your life, appears, then you also will appear with him in glory."
Colossians 3:3-4 (NIV)
A Word of Teaching
"Your life is hidden with Christ in God." Hidden does not mean lost. Hidden means secure. Protected. Kept. What is hidden in God cannot be stolen, cannot be corrupted, cannot be diminished by anything that happens in the visible world. Your true identity — the you that God created and redeemed — is hidden in Him. It is safe. It is real. It is waiting to be revealed.
This is why Paul connects it to Christ's appearing: when He appears, you also will appear with Him in glory. The true you is going to be revealed — and it will be glorious. The identity crisis you're in right now is not the final word. It is the cocoon stage. The butterfly is coming.
At this Table, you remember: you died to the old identity built on what you did. Your new identity is built on what Christ did. That is unshakeable.
The Bread
Hold the bread in your hand. This bread represents the body of Jesus Christ — the body broken so you could become who you were always meant to be. You are not defined by your career, your caregiving, your diagnosis, or your past. You are defined by the One who gave His body for you.
When you eat this bread, you are saying: "I died to the old identity built on what I did. The me that was defined by roles and accomplishments and other people's needs — that person died with Christ. And the person who lives now lives by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me."
"By His broken body, my identity is rebuilt. I am not who I used to be — I am who He says I am."
Eat the bread now, and let the old identity fall away.
The Cup
Hold the cup in your hand. This cup represents the blood of Jesus — the blood of the new covenant. This covenant includes your identity. You are not a project to be figured out. You are a person already known, already loved, already defined by the God who bled for you.
The blood speaks a better word than your self-doubt. It says: "You are Mine. I purchased you. I know your name. I know who you really are, even when you don't." The cup is proof that your identity is not something you achieve — it's something you receive.
"The blood of Jesus declares who I am: forgiven, redeemed, a child of God. My identity is received, not achieved."
Drink the cup now, and receive the identity He purchased for you.
Closing Prayer
Lord Jesus, I came to this Table lost — and I leave found. Not because I figured myself out, but because You know me. My life is hidden with You in God. That means I am safe. I am known. I am loved. The truest thing about me cannot be shaken.
Thank You for the bread — my old identity, buried with You. Thank You for the cup — my new identity, sealed by Your blood. I don't need to know who I am by the world's definitions. I only need to know Whose I am. And I am Yours. That is enough. That is everything.
Now help me live from that identity — not as the person I used to be, and not as the person I fear I've become, but as the person You say I am: Your child, Your handiwork, hidden in Christ. Amen.
Faith Declarations
My life is hidden with Christ in God. My identity is secure — not in what I do, but in Whose I am.
I am a new creation in Christ. The old has gone. I release who I was and embrace who God says I am.
I am God's handiwork — created on purpose, for a purpose, even in this season.
Who I am is not determined by my circumstances. It is determined by my Creator.
I am a child of God. That is the truest thing about me, and nothing can change it.
I don't need to know who I am — I only need to know Whose I am. And I am His.
