When You're Grieving the Death of a Friend
A true friend is a gift from God. Jesus called us friends — and He walks with you through this loss.
Welcome, friend.
Your friend is gone. Not a family member — but someone who chose you. Someone who saw you and loved you anyway. The person you called when life was hard or when you needed to laugh. A true friend is a rare gift, and losing them leaves a unique hole in your life.
I want you to know today: God sees your grief, and He honors the friendship you shared. Jesus called His disciples friends. He understands the love between friends. And when His friend Lazarus died, He wept — even knowing He was about to raise him. Your tears are holy.
Opening Prayer
Father, come near. Comfort the heart that misses a friend. Thank You for the gift that friendship was. Heal the ache of not being able to call them, to laugh with them, to sit in comfortable silence together. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Listen to me: Your friendship was a sacred thing, and the grief you feel honors it.
Friends are the family we choose. When you lose a friend, you lose a witness to your life — someone who saw you clearly, who knew your stories, who chose to love you. That loss is real. And it deserves to be grieved.
When you take Communion, you're saying: "I thank God for the gift of my friend. I release them into the arms of Jesus. I claim healing for the grief of losing them. And I receive the comfort that true friendship is never really lost — it shapes who you are forever."

Reflection
This bread represents the body of Christ — broken so that friendship with God would be restored, and broken so that the friendships we form here would not end at the grave. When you receive this bread, you receive the truth that your friendship continues in the communion of saints.
Prayer Over the Bread
Jesus, I thank You for Your broken body. I thank You for the gift of my friend. I release them into Your perfect friendship. I claim healing for the loss. By Your stripes, I am healed. Thank You. Amen.

Reflection
When Jesus shed His blood, He purchased a friendship with you that death cannot break. Your earthly friend is gone, but you have a Friend who will never leave — and who will reunite you with those you love. When you receive this cup, you receive the promise that love is stronger than death.
Prayer Over the Cup
Jesus, I thank You for Your blood. I claim the eternal friendship You purchased. I receive comfort for today and hope for reunion tomorrow. By Your blood, I am never alone. Amen.
