Prayer for Alzheimer's Disease

"Can a mother forget the baby at her breast? Though she may forget, I will not forget you!" — Isaiah 49:15

Alzheimer's takes and takes. First the small memories go, then the big ones. Your spouse looks at you and does not know your name. Your parent forgets you are their child. The shared history that binds you together is being erased, and you cannot stop it. The person is physically present but relationally distant in a way that breaks your heart every day. You grieve, and you feel guilty for grieving someone who is still alive. God knows what it is to be forgotten. His promise is that even when a human mind cannot hold onto Him, He holds onto that person. They are safe. They are known. This prayer is for anyone walking through Alzheimer's — as a patient in the early stages, or as a loved one watching the disease steal what you hold dear.

A Prayer for Those Affected by Alzheimer's

Father God, in the name of Jesus, I come to You about Alzheimer's. I thank You that You never forget us — even when we cannot remember You. I thank You that our identity is held in You, not in our memory. I thank You that this disease is not stronger than Your love.

I acknowledge the cruelty of this disease. I acknowledge the grief of being forgotten by someone you love. I acknowledge the exhaustion of caregiving when every day brings more loss. I acknowledge the fear of what the next stage will bring.

I plead the precious blood of Jesus over the brain being ravaged by this disease. Over every neuron and synapse. Over the memories being lost. Over the dignity of the person with Alzheimer's. Over the family's grief and exhaustion.

Slow the progression of this disease. Give researchers breakthroughs toward a cure. Give grace for each stage. Let the person with Alzheimer's feel safe and loved even when they cannot name why. Hold them close, Lord — they are Yours. Comfort the family member watching their loved one disappear.

I commit to loving faithfully even when love is not returned in recognizable ways. Thank You that Alzheimer's will not exist in eternity. Thank You that one day all minds will be whole. I love You. I honor You. In the mighty name of Jesus, I pray. Amen.
