Prayer for Anger

"In your anger do not sin: Do not let the sun go down while you are still angry." — Ephesians 4:26

Anger itself is not a sin — it can be a righteous response to injustice. But anger that goes unexamined, unchecked, or unresolved becomes destructive. It can explode outward and hurt the people you love. It can turn inward and become depression. It can simmer for years and become bitterness. This prayer is for anyone whose anger is bigger than they know how to handle — whether it burns hot and fast or cold and slow. God can handle your anger. Bring it to Him.

A Prayer for Those Struggling with Anger

Father, I come before You with anger. I'm angry — and I'm not even sure how to pray about it. I'm angry at a person who hurt me. I'm angry at a situation that wasn't fair. I'm angry at myself for mistakes I keep making. I'm even angry at You for allowing things I don't understand.

I bring You the raw anger. Not the cleaned-up version. Not the polite prayer. The real feelings. You can handle them. You're not intimidated by my emotions. You gave them to me. You know what it is to be angry — Jesus overturned tables in the temple. You understand righteous anger. Help me sort through what is righteous and what is sinful.

Lord, show me what's underneath the anger. Anger is often the armor I wear over something more vulnerable — hurt, fear, rejection, injustice, grief, powerlessness. Peel back the layers. Help me see what I'm really feeling so I can bring the real wound to You for healing.

For the anger that has hurt others — my words, my actions, my reactions — I confess it as sin. Forgive me. Heal the relationships I've damaged. Give me the humility to apologize where I need to. Teach me to pause between the feeling and the reaction, to let the Holy Spirit check me before I speak or act.

For the anger I've turned inward — the self-hatred, the depression, the destructive choices — bring that into the light. Help me stop punishing myself for things You've already forgiven. Help me stop letting my anger at others become destruction of myself.

For the righteous anger — the anger at injustice, at abuse, at things that should make me angry — channel it. Don't let it fester into bitterness. Turn it into action. Turn it into prayer. Turn it into advocacy. Let it produce something good instead of something destructive.

I declare that anger will not control me. I will not be mastered by my emotions. The Holy Spirit produces self-control in me. I submit my anger to the lordship of Jesus Christ.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
