Prayer for a Broken Heart

"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18

A broken heart is not just a metaphor — it's a physical, emotional, and spiritual reality. When love is lost, when trust is shattered, when someone dies, when a dream collapses — the heart actually aches. You can feel it in your chest. And the pain can make you wonder if you'll ever feel whole again. But the God who made your heart knows how to mend it. He is close to the brokenhearted. Not distant. Not indifferent. Close. This prayer is for everyone who feels shattered and doesn't know how the pieces could ever come back together.

A Prayer for the Brokenhearted

Father, my heart is broken. I'm not being dramatic. It genuinely feels shattered. Something I held precious has been taken, lost, or destroyed — and the pain is overwhelming. Some days I don't know how I'm going to get through. Some moments I can barely breathe. The grief comes in waves, and I never know when the next one will hit.

But Your Word says You are close to the brokenhearted. Not observing from a distance. Near. Present. Active. So I'm asking You to draw near right now. I need to feel Your presence, because human comfort only goes so far. Only You can reach the places in my heart that are truly broken. Only You can heal what only You can see.

I don't ask You to make the pain disappear instantly. I know healing takes time. I ask You to be with me in the pain — to sit with me, to hold me, to be my comfort when nothing else comforts. Let me grieve without guilt. Let me cry without shame. Jesus wept, and so can I.

Father, mend what is broken. Not just patch it — heal it. Heal the trust that was shattered. Heal the hope that was crushed. Heal the love that was lost. Heal the identity that was wrapped up in what I lost. Rebuild me. The way You designed hearts to heal — let that process begin.

Protect me from becoming hard. Broken hearts can heal into harder hearts if the wound is not surrendered to You. I don't want to come out of this bitter, closed off, unable to trust or love again. Heal me in a way that makes me softer, not harder. More compassionate, not more cynical. More open, not more guarded.

Thank You that brokenness is not the end of the story. You are the God of resurrection. You bring dead things back to life. You restore what the locusts have eaten. My heart may be broken right now, but You are the Healer — and You are just getting started.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
