Prayer for Depression
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit." — Psalm 34:18
Depression is a weight that words often fail to describe. It is not a lack of faith. It is not something you can simply "pray away" or "snap out of." It is a real battle — spiritual, emotional, and often physical — and God is not ashamed of you for fighting it. Some of the most faithful people in Scripture knew this darkness intimately — David, Elijah, Jeremiah. You are in good company. This prayer is for you — for the days when getting out of bed feels like a victory, for the moments when hope feels far away, and for the truth that God is closest to the brokenhearted.
A Prayer for Those Battling Depression
Father, I come before You on behalf of every person fighting the heavy weight of depression.
Lord, I thank You that You are not intimidated by depression. You do not roll Your eyes at the struggle or dismiss it as weakness. You draw near to the brokenhearted. You save those crushed in spirit. So right now, in the name of Jesus, I ask You to draw near to every person reading this prayer who feels crushed.
I speak Your light into every dark corner of their mind. Depression, you are not the final word over this person's life. Jesus is. I command every spirit of heaviness to lift. I bind every lie that says this will never end, that there is no hope, that life will always feel this way. Those are not Your thoughts toward them, Father. Your thoughts are of peace, of a future, of hope.
Father, I ask for practical help. Lead this person to the right counselor, the right support group, the right treatment if that is part of their healing journey. Remove the stigma. Remove the shame. Give them the courage to reach out for help. Put people around them who will sit with them in the darkness without trying to fix them with platitudes.
I pray for the little things — the energy to shower, to eat, to step outside. When every small act feels monumental, celebrate those victories with them. Let them feel Your pleasure in their smallest steps forward.
Restore joy. It may not come all at once — it may return in glimpses, in moments, in the laughter that surprises them — but let it return. Let them taste and see that life can feel good again.
Thank You, Father, that You are the lifter of their head. Thank You that morning comes, even after the longest night. Thank You that they are not alone — You are with them.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
