Prayer for Unforgiveness

"Forgive as the Lord forgave you." — Colossians 3:13

Forgiveness is one of the hardest things God asks of us. It feels like letting someone off the hook. It feels like saying what they did was okay. It feels like giving up the right to be angry. But forgiveness is none of those things. Forgiveness is releasing a debt into God's hands — because holding onto it is destroying you, not them. Unforgiveness is a prison where you are both the warden and the prisoner. This prayer is for everyone who knows they need to forgive but doesn't know how — and for those who aren't even sure they want to yet.

A Prayer for the Grace to Forgive

Father, I'm struggling to forgive. I know I'm supposed to. I know You command it. I know You forgave me first. But what they did — it was so wrong. It cut so deep. The consequences are still with me. And forgiving feels like pretending it didn't matter. But it did matter.

So I come to You honestly — not fake, not pretending to be more spiritual than I am. I'm not ready. Part of me doesn't even want to forgive. But I know unforgiveness is hurting me more than it's hurting them. I know this prison I've built for them has me locked inside too.

Give me the want-to. If I can't start with forgiveness, let me start with willingness to be made willing. Soften what has become hard. Open what has closed. Let Your Spirit do in me what I cannot do in myself.

Remind me of my own forgiveness. I didn't deserve it. I couldn't earn it. But You forgave me completely, freely, at great cost to Yourself. The servant forgiven a massive debt has no right to choke the person who owes a smaller one. Let that truth break through my resistance.

I choose to forgive — as an act of my will, not a feeling. I release them from the debt they owe me. I release the need for revenge. I release the hope that they'll suffer proportionate to what they caused. I release them to You — because You are the righteous Judge who will handle everything perfectly. I don't need to be the judge.

Forgive me for holding this so long. Forgive me for the ways unforgiveness has made me bitter, hard, and closed off. Restore what unforgiveness has stolen.

Thank You that I don't forgive in my own strength. Your grace is sufficient. The same grace that saved me enables me to forgive. I receive it now.
