10 Open Doors the Enemy Loves to Use
How to Recognize Them, Close Them, and Walk in Victory
By Pastor Nicole Washington
Introduction
One of the biggest questions believers ask is: "How did I get here?" How did I end up so discouraged? How did I lose my peace? How did I become so anxious? How did my relationships become so strained? How did my spiritual life become so dry?
The answer is not always because we have done something terrible. Sometimes it is because the enemy gained access through what the Bible calls a foothold.
"Nor give place to the devil."
Ephesians 4:27
The Greek word translated "place" is topos, which means territory, opportunity, foothold, or room to operate. The Apostle Paul was teaching believers that Satan cannot simply take territory in our lives. He looks for places we knowingly or unknowingly leave unguarded.
The good news: What can be opened can also be closed. The blood of Jesus is greater than every open door. The authority of the believer is greater than every attack of the enemy.
Unforgiveness
Few things give the enemy more access than unforgiveness. When someone hurts us, disappoints us, betrays us, or wounds us, it is natural to feel pain. But when pain becomes bitterness, a door opens.
"Forgive, and you will be forgiven."
Luke 6:37
Forgiveness does not mean what happened was acceptable. Forgiveness does not mean trust is automatically restored. Forgiveness means releasing the debt to God. When we refuse to forgive, we continue carrying a burden that God never intended us to carry.
How to Close the Door
"Father, I choose to forgive. I release this person into Your hands. I refuse to carry this offense any longer."
Offense
Offense is one of Satan's favorite traps. In fact, the Greek word often translated offense is skandalon, which originally referred to the trigger of a trap. Think about that. The enemy sets a trap. We take the bait. Then we become trapped.
Many believers are not defeated by the devil. They are defeated by offense. Offense steals peace. Offense steals joy. Offense damages relationships. Offense clouds judgment.
How to Close the Door
Ask yourself: "Am I holding on to something that God wants me to release?" Choose freedom over being right.
Strife
James gives one of the strongest warnings in Scripture:
"For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there."
James 3:16
Notice what follows strife: confusion. Every evil work. That is serious. The enemy loves homes filled with arguments. He loves churches filled with division. He loves families divided by old wounds. Strife creates spiritual turbulence. Peace cannot flourish where constant conflict exists.
How to Close the Door
Choose humility. Choose peace. Refuse to participate in gossip, arguments, and unnecessary drama.
Fear
Fear is one of the most common weapons of the enemy. Fear exaggerates problems. Fear magnifies uncertainty. Fear steals peace. Fear distorts reality.
"God has not given us a spirit of fear."
2 Timothy 1:7
Notice that fear is identified as a spirit. Fear is not from God. Faith and fear both expect something. Fear expects disaster. Faith expects God.
How to Close the Door
Feed your faith more than your fears. Spend more time in God's promises than in worst-case scenarios.
Negative Words
Words are powerful.
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue."
Proverbs 18:21
Many people unknowingly agree with the enemy through their own speech. Statements such as: "Nothing ever works out for me." "I'll probably get sick." "Things always go wrong." "I'm never going to make it." These words become agreements. Your mouth should partner with God, not with fear.
How to Close the Door
Replace negative declarations with God's promises. Speak life. Speak faith. Speak hope.
Isolation
There is a difference between solitude and isolation. Jesus practiced solitude. The enemy promotes isolation. When people are hurting, they often withdraw. They stop answering calls. They stop attending church. They stop connecting with others. Isolation makes spiritual attacks more effective.
"Two are better than one."
Ecclesiastes 4:9
God designed us for community.
How to Close the Door
Reach out. Connect with healthy believers. Allow trusted people to encourage and support you.
Pride
Pride is dangerous because it is difficult to see in ourselves. Pride says: "I don't need help. I already know. Nobody can tell me anything. I can handle this alone."
Pride was the original sin of Lucifer. Humility attracts grace.
"God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."
James 4:6
How to Close the Door
Ask God to keep your heart teachable. Remain humble. Remain correctable. Remain dependent upon Him.
Chronic Worry
Many believers call it concern. Jesus called it worry. Worry is meditation in the wrong direction. Instead of focusing on God's promises, worry focuses on potential problems. Jesus repeatedly taught His followers not to worry. Not because problems aren't real. But because God is greater than every problem.
How to Close the Door
Turn every worry into a prayer. Every time worry appears, respond with prayer and thanksgiving.
Bitterness
Bitterness is unresolved pain that has taken root. Hebrews 12:15 warns us about a root of bitterness. Roots grow underground before anyone sees them. Bitterness works the same way. It develops quietly. Over time it contaminates relationships, emotions, and spiritual health.
How to Close the Door
Ask God to heal the wound beneath the bitterness. Most bitterness is hiding unhealed pain. Healing removes the root.
Unhealed Emotional Wounds
Many spiritual battles are connected to emotional wounds that have never been addressed. Rejection. Abandonment. Betrayal. Humiliation. Disappointment. Loss. These wounds become vulnerable places where the enemy repeatedly attacks.
Jesus came not only to forgive sins. He came to heal broken hearts.
"He heals the brokenhearted and binds up their wounds."
Psalm 147:3
How to Close the Door
Invite Jesus into the painful places. Allow Him to heal what others wounded. Healing closes doors that pain has left open.
How to Close Every Door
The solution is not fear. The solution is not constantly looking for demons. The solution is a close relationship with Jesus.
- We hear His voice.
- We recognize deception.
- We walk in peace.
- We recover quickly from mistakes.
- We remain spiritually strong.
The blood of Jesus is still powerful. The Holy Spirit is still our Helper. And God's grace is still greater than every failure.
Prayer to Close Every Open Door
Father, in the name of Jesus, I thank You for Your love, mercy, and grace.
Today I ask You to reveal any area of my life where I have unknowingly given the enemy access.
I repent of every sin, every wrong attitude, every unforgiveness, every fear, every offense, every word spoken in unbelief, and every agreement with darkness.
I renounce every open door and close it now through the blood of Jesus Christ.
I declare that my life belongs to You. My mind belongs to You. My family belongs to You. My future belongs to You.
I receive Your peace, Your wisdom, Your protection, and Your strength.
Fill me afresh with Your Holy Spirit and help me walk in victory every day.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Declarations
Remember
The enemy is always looking for an entrance. But Jesus has already given you the authority to close every door and walk in freedom.
Stay alert. Stay prayerful. Stay rooted in God's Word.
And walk in the victory Christ has already won for you.
