Opening Question
You just got born again. You just accepted Jesus.
Now what?
You're not just a believer. You're not just a follower.
You're a child of God.
And that means everything changes.
You've Been Adopted
When you accept Jesus, you're not just getting a religion. You're getting a family.
God legally adopts you.
EPHESIANS 1:5
"Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will."
God adopted you. Not because you earned it. Not because you deserved it. Because God wanted you.
God looked at you and said: "I want this person to be My child."
And through Jesus, God made it official. You're adopted into God's family.
You Call God "Daddy"
This is huge.
When you're a child of God, you can call God by the most intimate name possible.
That word is Abba. Here's what it means:
Abba is Aramaic for "Daddy."
Not "Your Majesty." Not "Lord." Not "Your Highness."
Daddy.
The way a child talks to their father.
ROMANS 8:15
"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."
You can cry "Abba, Father."
You can come to God like a child comes to their father. With trust. With vulnerability. With the knowledge that you're loved and safe.
That's what it means to be a child of God.
You Have Rights and Privileges
Being a child of God isn't just about connection. It's about access.
GALATIANS 4:7
"Wherefore thou art no more a servant, but a son; and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ."
You're no longer a servant. You're a son.
A servant does what they're told out of fear. A servant earns their keep. A servant has no inheritance.
But a son? A son is loved. A son belongs. A son has rights. And a son is also disciplined — corrected by a Father who wants him to grow, not crushed by a master who wants him to perform. Sonship doesn't remove accountability; it changes the reason behind it. You don't obey to earn your place. You obey because you already have one.
As a child of God:
You have access to God. You can come to God anytime, anywhere. God is always available to you.
You're heard. When you pray, God listens. Your voice matters to God.
You're protected. God watches over you. He is your refuge and your shield. Nothing can touch you outside of His permission — and even when hard things come, He promises to work them for your good (Romans 8:28). Your ultimate destiny is safe in His hands.
You're provided for. God wants you to have the best. God's not stingy with His children.
You're disciplined with love. When you mess up, God doesn't punish you like an enemy. God corrects you like a father who loves you.
You Have an Inheritance
Here's something that blows people away:
As a child of God, you're an heir. You inherit what belongs to God.
ROMANS 8:17
"And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ."
You're a joint-heir with Christ.
That means what belongs to Christ belongs to you too. His glory. His power. His authority.
Not someday. Now. In this moment.
You inherit eternal life. You inherit God's love. You inherit God's promises. You inherit God's power.
You Belong
One of the deepest human needs is to belong. To be part of something. To have a family.
And now you do. You belong to God's family.
That means:
You're not alone. You have brothers and sisters in Christ.
You're not abandoned. God will never leave you or forsake you.
You're not rejected. Even when you fail, you're still accepted.
You're not different. You fit. You belong.
1 JOHN 3:1
"Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God."
Look at the love God has for you. Enough to call you God's son or daughter.
That's belonging.
You're Loved Completely
Here's the thing that changes everything:
God doesn't love you because you perform. God doesn't love you because you're good. God doesn't love you because you earn it.
God loves you because you're God's child.
That's it. That's all the reason God needs.
MATTHEW 3:17
"And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."
This is God speaking about Jesus, and it applies to you too.
God looks at you and says: "This is My beloved child, in whom I am well pleased."
Not because you're perfect. Because you're loved.
What This Means in Your Daily Life
So what does it practically mean to be a child of God?
When you're afraid:
Remember that your Father is with you. God protects you.
When you're lonely:
Remember that you belong to a family. You're never alone.
When you're struggling:
Remember that your Father loves you and wants to help. Call out to God like you'd call out to your dad.
When you fail:
Remember that you're still loved. Still accepted. Still part of the family.
When you need something:
Remember that your Father cares about what you need. Ask. Trust. Receive.
When you're not sure:
Remember that your Father has wisdom. Go to God with your questions. God will guide you.
You're God's Treasure
Listen to this:
God created you. God loves you. God adopted you. God chose you.
You're not accidental. You're not a mistake. You're not a burden.
You're God's child. God's treasure. God's beloved.
And nothing — absolutely nothing — can change that.
Reflection Questions
- Does it feel real to you that you're God's child? What would change if it sank deeper?
- How would you live differently if you truly believed God is your Daddy who loves you completely?
- What rights and privileges of being God's child do you want to step into?
A Prayer
Father — Abba — I'm still getting used to being Your child. Help me believe it. Help me feel it. Help me live like it.
Thank You for adopting me. Thank You for making me part of Your family. Thank You for calling me Your beloved.
Help me understand that I belong to You. Help me know that I'm safe with You. Help me trust that You love me completely.
As I go through life, remind me that I'm Your child. Remind me that I can call out to You anytime. Remind me that You're listening.
I receive my identity as Your child. I receive Your love. I receive my place in Your family.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Declarations to Hold Onto
Say these out loud. Let your identity as God's child settle deep into your spirit.
- I am a child of God. Not a servant. Not a stranger. A child.
- I have been adopted into God's family. God chose me because He wanted me.
- I can call God "Abba" — Daddy. I come to Him with trust and vulnerability.
- I am a joint-heir with Christ. What belongs to Jesus belongs to me.
- I belong. I am not alone, not abandoned, not rejected.
- I am God's beloved, and He is well pleased with me. Not because of my performance — because I'm His.
- Nothing can change my place in God's family. I am His child forever.
