Opening Question
Here's a thought that terrifies most people:
When you stand before God — a perfect, holy, righteous God — what are you going to say?
You're not perfect. You've sinned. You've made mistakes. You've done things you regret.
So how can you possibly stand before God?
The answer is: Justification. God declares you righteous.
The Problem: You're Not Righteous
Let's be honest. You're not perfect. Neither am I.
We've all done things we shouldn't have done. We've failed. We've fallen short.
ROMANS 3:23
"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."
All of us. Every single person. We've come short of God's standard.
God is perfect. God is holy. God is righteous.
And we're not.
So how can you stand before a holy God when you're not holy?
It seems impossible.
What Justification Means
The word "justification" is a legal term.
In a courtroom, if you're accused of a crime, the judge either declares you guilty or declares you not guilty. When the judge declares you not guilty, that's a justification. The judge has determined that you are righteous in the eyes of the law.
Here's what the Greek word dikaiosis means: to declare someone righteous, to pronounce someone not guilty, to acquit someone.
So justification means: God declares you righteous even though you're not.
Not because you are righteous. But because Jesus is righteous, and Jesus' righteousness covers you.
How Justification Works
So how does God declare you righteous when you're not?
Through Jesus.
Here's what happens:
Step One: You admit you're a sinner. You acknowledge you've sinned. You confess it.
Step Two: You believe that Jesus died for your sins. Jesus took your punishment. Jesus paid the price.
Step Three: You ask Jesus to save you. You ask for forgiveness.
Step Four: God looks at you and doesn't see your sin. God sees Jesus' righteousness covering you.
And God declares you justified. Righteous. Not guilty.
ROMANS 5:1
"Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ."
You are justified by faith. Not by works. Not by how good you are. By faith in Jesus.
And the result? Peace with God.
The Righteousness Exchange
Here's how it works:
Jesus took your sin. Jesus bore your shame. Jesus paid your debt.
And in exchange, Jesus gave you His righteousness.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:21
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin for you.
And you, who were sinful, became the righteousness of God in Jesus.
That's the exchange. That's justification.
It's not fair. It's not deserved. It's grace.
What This Means
So what does it mean that you're justified?
It means God doesn't see your sin anymore.
When God looks at you, God sees Jesus. God sees righteousness. God sees someone who is forgiven and accepted.
It means you can stand before God.
You don't have to hide. You don't have to be ashamed. You can come boldly before God's throne.
HEBREWS 4:16
"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need."
You can come boldly. Not timidly. Not afraid. Boldly.
Because you're justified. Because you're righteous in God's eyes. Because Jesus covered your sin.
It means you have a new legal standing.
In God's eyes, you're righteous. You're forgiven. You're accepted. You're family.
Once and For All
Here's what's beautiful: Justification isn't something you have to earn over and over.
You're not justified on Mondays and unjustified on Thursdays because you messed up.
When Jesus justifies you, you're justified. Done. Complete.
ROMANS 8:1
"There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit."
There is no condemnation. None. You're not condemned.
Even when you struggle. Even when you mess up. Even when you fail.
You're justified.
Living in Justification
So how do you live in this reality?
Believe it.
Accept that God has declared you righteous. Stop earning. Stop performing. Just believe.
Act like it.
Start living like a righteous person would. Treat your body like God's temple. Treat others with respect. Make choices that honor God.
Remind yourself.
When shame or condemnation shows up, remind yourself: I am justified. I am righteous in God's eyes. Jesus covered my sin.
Walk confidently.
Don't be timid. You have a right to be God's child. You have a right to approach God's throne. Walk like it.

- Do you believe God has declared you righteous? Why or why not?
- What shame or condemnation are you still carrying that Jesus already took? What would change if you released it?
- If you truly believed you were justified and righteous, how would you live differently?
A Prayer
Father, I believe that Jesus' righteousness covers me. I believe that You have declared me justified.
Help me accept this. Help me stop earning and start receiving.
Forgive me for living like I'm still condemned. Forgive me for believing the lies that I'm not good enough.
Help me walk in the reality that I am righteous in Your eyes. That I am justified. That I am forgiven.
Give me courage to stand before You boldly, knowing that I belong to You.
Thank You for justifying me through Jesus.

Declarations to Hold Onto
Say these out loud. Let the truth of your justification settle into your identity.
- I am justified by faith in Jesus Christ. Not by works. Not by performance. By faith.
- I have peace with God. The verdict is settled. I am not guilty.
- I am the righteousness of God in Christ. Jesus became sin for me so I could become righteous.
- There is no condemnation for me. None. I am in Christ Jesus.
- I can stand boldly before God's throne. I don't hide. I don't cower. I come boldly.
- Justification is once and for all. I don't earn it every day. Jesus already secured it.
- God sees Jesus when He looks at me. My sin is covered. I am forgiven and accepted.
