Pray and Slay Teaching
The Ites Are Still Here
Identifying the Spiritual Enemies That Still Fight the People of God
A Pray and Slay Teaching by Pastor Nicole Washington
When God brought Israel out of Egypt, He did not bring them into an empty land. He brought them into a land occupied by enemies.
The Amalekites, Hittites, Amorites, Canaanites, Jebusites, Perizzites, Girgashites, and Philistines were real nations that opposed God's people. Yet their stories reveal spiritual patterns that believers still face today.
The names have changed, but the battles remain.
In this powerful Pray and Slay teaching, Pastor Nicole Washington explores how these ancient enemies reveal modern spiritual strategies and how believers can walk in victory through Jesus Christ.
The Names Have Changed, But the Battles Remain
Many believers read the Old Testament and see lists of strange names: The Hittites. The Amorites. The Canaanites. The Jebusites. The Perizzites. The Girgashites. The Amalekites. The Philistines.
Most assume these nations disappeared thousands of years ago.
While these were real people and real enemies, Scripture teaches that many Old Testament battles reveal spiritual truths that continue to impact believers today.
Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:11: "Now all these things happened unto them for examples, and they are written for our instruction."
The Greek word translated examples is typos. It means a pattern, model, or foreshadowing. Israel's enemies reveal spiritual enemies that still seek to oppose God's people.
The battlefield has moved. The enemy's methods have not.
What Are The Ites?
Sometimes reading the Bible through modern eyes, we come across long lists of unusual names and nations. While these were real people and real enemies, many of these Old Testament accounts also serve as spiritual patterns — revealing truths about the battles believers still face today.
When God brought Israel into the Promised Land, He did not bring them into an empty territory. They entered a land that was already occupied by hostile nations that had to be confronted and driven out.
God repeatedly commanded Israel to drive out these nations completely because He knew that if they remained in the land, they would become a snare — pulling His people toward idolatry, compromise, and spiritual decline.
The enemies of your promise will not leave voluntarily. They must be driven out.
The Eight Ites
Eight ancient enemies. Eight modern spiritual strategies. Here is what each one represents.
The Amalekites — The Spirit of Discouragement
"Dweller in a Valley"
The Amalekites attacked Israel from behind when they were weary and worn down. They targeted the stragglers — those who were tired, weak, and falling behind. The Amalekite spirit represents the enemy that attacks you when you are exhausted, depleted, and ready to give up. It is the attack that comes when you feel like you have nothing left to fight with.
Scripture: Exodus 17:8-16; Deuteronomy 25:17-19
The Hittites — The Spirit of Fear
"Sons of Terror / Sons of Heth"
The Hittites were known as mighty warriors who instilled fear and intimidation. The Hittite spirit represents fear and intimidation — the voice that says you are not strong enough, not capable enough, and that the battle is too big for you. It is the spirit that tries to make you retreat before the fight even begins.
Scripture: Joshua 1:4; Deuteronomy 7:1
The Amorites — The Spirit of Pride and Rebellion
"Mountain Dwellers / Mountain People"
The Amorites were known for their pride, arrogance, and refusal to submit to God. They built cities on mountains and trusted in their own strength. The Amorite spirit represents pride, self-sufficiency, rebellion, and the refusal to humble yourself before God. It is the voice that says you do not need God — you can handle this on your own.
Scripture: Joshua 10:5; Amos 2:9-10
The Canaanites — The Spirit of Worldliness and Compromise
"Lowlanders / Merchants / Traffickers"
The Canaanites were known for immoral religious practices, idol worship, and blending in with the people of God to influence and corrupt them. The Canaanite spirit represents worldliness, moral compromise, and the temptation to adopt the values and practices of the culture around you instead of staying faithful to God.
Scripture: Exodus 23:23-33; Joshua 3:10
The Jebusites — The Spirit of Oppression and Spiritual Suppression
"Threshers / Those Who Trample Down"
The Jebusites occupied Jerusalem and held it as a stronghold for many years. The Jebusite spirit represents oppression, spiritual suppression, and the enemy that tries to hold ground in your life that rightfully belongs to God. It is the stronghold that resists being removed.
Scripture: Joshua 15:63; 2 Samuel 5:6-7
The Perizzites — The Spirit of Disorder, Lack of Boundaries, and Drifting
"Villagers / Wanderers / Unwalled Towns"
The Perizzites were known for living in unwalled villages — without protection, boundaries, or structure. The Perizzite spirit represents disorder, lack of vision, lack of boundaries, and spiritual drifting. It is the enemy that keeps you from establishing godly order and protection in your life.
Scripture: Exodus 23:23; Judges 1:4-5
The Girgashites — The Spirit of Carnality and Earthly-Mindedness
"Strangers Drawing Near / Clay-Dwellers"
The name Girgashite is connected to the idea of dwelling in clay or earth. The Girgashite spirit represents carnality — being consumed with earthly things, living according to the flesh, and neglecting spiritual priorities. It is the enemy that keeps you earthbound and flesh-focused.
Scripture: Genesis 15:21; Joshua 3:10
The Philistines — The Spirit of Intimidation and Giant Warfare
"Immigrants / Wanderers / Rollers in the Dust"
The Philistines were Israel's most famous enemy. They had superior weapons, fierce warriors, and produced giants like Goliath. The Philistine spirit represents intimidation through overwhelming odds, giant-sized problems, and the taunting voice that mocks your faith and tries to make God look small and powerless.
Scripture: 1 Samuel 17; Judges 16
Why These Enemies Matter Today
While these were real nations and literal enemies, the Apostle Paul writes in 1 Corinthians 10:11, "Now all these things happened unto them for examples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come."
The Greek word for "examples" is tupos. It means a pattern, model, or type. The battles Israel faced in the natural realm are patterns of the spiritual battles all believers face.
The names may change, but the enemy's methods do not.
The Amalekites attacked the weary
Discouragement still attacks you when you are tired
The Hittites used fear and terror
Fear still tries to paralyze believers
The Amorites trusted in their own strength
Pride still tells us we do not need God
The Canaanites pulled Israel into idolatry
Worldliness still pulls believers from God
The Jebusites held Jerusalem as a stronghold
Strongholds still resist being removed
The Perizzites lived without walls
Drifting and disorder still threaten our lives
The Girgashites were earthbound
Carnality still keeps us focused on the flesh
The Philistines had giants and superior weapons
Intimidation still makes problems seem too big
How to Overcome the Ites
The good news is that God has already given you everything you need to walk in victory.
Recognize the Enemy
You cannot fight what you will not identify. The first step to victory is recognizing which spiritual enemies are at work in your life. Are you dealing with discouragement? Fear? Pride? Compromise? Call it by name and bring it into the light.
Use the Word of God
Jesus defeated the enemy in the wilderness with the Word of God. He did not debate. He did not reason. He declared, 'It is written.' Your primary weapon is the Word of God. Know it. Speak it. Stand on it.
Pray Without Ceasing
Prayer is not a last resort. It is your lifeline. Prayer invites God's power into your situation and pushes back the forces of darkness. Do not wait until the battle is overwhelming — pray before, during, and after the fight.
Put On the Full Armor of God
Ephesians 6 describes the armor God has given every believer. The belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shoes of peace, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit. You are not unarmed. Suit up.
Walk in the Authority of Jesus Christ
You do not fight for victory — you fight from victory. Jesus has already defeated every enemy. Colossians 2:15 says He disarmed principalities and powers and made a public spectacle of them through the cross. Walk in the authority He has given you.
Pray and Slay Declarations
Speak these declarations over your life. The Word of God in your mouth is a weapon.
I declare that discouragement will not defeat me. The joy of the Lord is my strength.
I declare that fear will not control me. God has not given me a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind.
I declare that pride will not rule me. I humble myself under the mighty hand of God.
I declare that I will not compromise with the world. I am set apart for God and His purposes.
I declare that every spiritual stronghold in my life is being torn down by the power of the Holy Spirit.
I declare that I live with godly order, healthy boundaries, and spiritual purpose.
I declare that I set my mind on things above, not on earthly things. I am spiritually minded.
I declare that my God is bigger than any giant I face. No weapon formed against me shall prosper.
I walk in authority.
I walk in victory.
I am more than a conqueror through Jesus Christ.
As Jesus is, so am I in this world.
Amen.
