Opening Question

You ever feel like something's fundamentally broken about you?

Like no matter what you do, there's something wrong at the core?

Maybe you're struggling with an addiction, a pattern, a shame that won't leave.

And you think: There must be something wrong with me.

But let me stop you right there.

Nothing is wrong with who you are. What you're feeling is the weight of a broken world — and that's something Jesus already made a way to heal.

The Problem Didn't Start With You

Listen, the problem started a long time before you were born.

Way back in the Garden of Eden.

God created Adam and Eve and put them in Paradise. No pain. No struggle. No shame. Just life, love, and freedom.

But then Adam and Eve made a choice. They disobeyed God. They ate from the tree God told them not to touch.

And in that moment, sin entered the world.

Listen to what happened:

GENESIS 3:6-7

"And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat, and gave also unto her husband with her; and he did eat. And the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons."

Suddenly they felt shame. They hid. They tried to cover themselves up.

That shame? That's not their fault. That's the consequence of sin.

But here's the thing: That sin is not your sin.

You Inherited a Condition, Not Guilt

Now, you're born into a world where sin exists. You're born with a nature that's affected by sin. But that doesn't make you guilty for Adam and Eve's choice.

Listen to what Paul wrote:

ROMANS 5:12

"Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin; and so death passed upon all men, for that all have sinned."

Sin entered the world through one man. And because of that, everyone experiences the effects of sin.

But you're not bad because sin exists. You're struggling because you live in a world where sin has consequences.

There's a difference.

It's like being born into a country at war. You didn't start the war. You didn't choose the conflict. But you're affected by it because you live there.

Same thing with sin.

You Are Not Your Mistakes

Here's what the enemy wants you to believe:

"You are what you did. You are your worst moment. You are your addiction. You are your shame."

But that's a lie.

You are not your mistakes.

You are a person who made mistakes. There's a huge difference.

The Greek word for sin is hamartia — literally "missing the mark." It means you aimed at something and didn't hit it. It doesn't mean you ARE the miss. It means you made a shot that didn't land.

You can shoot again. You can aim differently. You can hit the mark next time.

But the miss doesn't define you.

ROMANS 3:23

"For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God."

All. Everyone. Every human being has missed the mark at some point.

That doesn't mean you're broken. It means you're human.

What You Actually Are

So if nothing's wrong with you, what are you?

You're a person living in a fallen world. You're dealing with temptations and struggles that come from living here.

You might be struggling with:

  • An addiction
  • A pattern of behavior you hate
  • Shame from your past
  • Hurt from what others did to you
  • Confusion about who you are
  • Fear about the future

But none of that is because something is fundamentally wrong with you.

It's because you're human. And humans struggle.

JOHN 16:33

"These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world."

Jesus said: In this world, you will struggle.

Not because you're broken. Because the world is broken.

But Jesus has already overcome that. Jesus has already won.

You Are Loved and Valuable

So let me be clear about what you are:

You are loved. Completely. By God.

You are valuable. Your life matters.

You are worthy of care, respect, and kindness — especially from yourself.

You are capable of change. You are not stuck in your patterns.

You are forgiven. Not because your sin wasn't real — but because Jesus already paid for it. The debt is canceled. The way back is open. God isn't waiting for you to get clean before you come home. He's already running toward you.

You are not your worst moment. You are not your shame. You are not your addiction.

You are a person with worth who is dealing with a broken world's effects.

And that's fixable.

The Real Answer

So what's wrong with you?

Nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

What you're struggling with? That's not a character flaw. That's not a sign that you're broken beyond repair.

That's a symptom of living in a world affected by sin.

And there's a cure for that.

His name is Jesus.

But that's the next teaching.

For now, know this:

You are not broken. You are not bad. You are not wrong.

You are beloved.

Reflection Questions

  1. What shame or struggle have you been carrying as if it defines you? How would it change if you separated the action from your identity?
  2. If you believed — really believed — that nothing is fundamentally wrong with you, how would you treat yourself differently?
  3. What would it feel like to accept that you're human, not broken?

A Prayer

Father, I'm sorry for believing I was broken. I'm sorry for the shame I've been carrying.

Help me see the difference between my mistakes and my identity. Help me understand that I'm not my worst moment.

Heal the places where I've believed lies about myself. Restore my sense of worth.

Help me look at my struggles not as proof that I'm broken, but as proof that I'm human — and that I need help.

I accept that I'm valuable. I accept that I matter. I accept that I'm loved.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Declarations to Hold Onto

Say these out loud. Let the truth replace the lies you've been believing.

  • Nothing is wrong with me. I am not broken. I am human.
  • I inherited a condition, not guilt. The sin in the world is not my fault.
  • I am not my mistakes. I am a person who made mistakes — and I can aim again.
  • All have sinned. Everyone has missed the mark. I'm in good company.
  • I am loved, valuable, and worthy. My life matters to God.
  • I am capable of change. I am not stuck in my patterns.
  • Jesus has overcome the world. And He's overcome what I'm facing too.

If this teaching helped you see yourself differently, share it with someone who's asking the same question. You never know who needs to hear that they're not broken — they're beloved.
