Opening
You post something. And then you wait.
You watch the likes come in. One. Five. Twenty. A hundred.
And with each like, you feel a little better about yourself.
But then the engagement slows. The likes plateau. And you feel... less.
Less successful. Less valuable. Less worthy.
But here's the truth: Your worth has nothing to do with a screen.
The Validation Addiction
What's happening is real. Social media is literally designed to be addictive. And I'm not saying that to scare you — I'm saying it so you understand what you're up against.
Every like triggers dopamine in your brain. Your brain gets a hit of "you're good, you're liked, you matter." So you keep posting. Keep checking. Keep waiting for the next hit.
But here's the problem: It's never enough.
There's always someone with more followers. More likes. More engagement. So you start chasing it. Adjusting your content. Performing. Curating. Trying to get the validation that makes you feel worthy.
But you're building your worth on sand.
Proverbs 29:25
"The fear of man bringeth a snare: but whoso putteth his trust in the Lord shall be safe."
The fear of man — the need for man's approval — is a snare. A trap. When you're seeking validation from people — likes, followers, comments — you're trapped. And the worst part? The trap feels normal. Everyone's in it. So you don't even realize you're caught.
Where Your Real Worth Comes From
Here's what you need to know — and I mean really know, deep in your bones:
Your worth doesn't come from likes. It comes from God.
Genesis 1:27
"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him."
You are made in God's image. That's your worth. Not changeable. Not based on performance. Not higher when the post does well and lower when it flops. Fixed. Permanent. Given by God.
1 Peter 2:9
"But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light."
You are chosen. Royal. Holy. That's your identity. A thousand people could unlike your post and you'd still be chosen. A million people could unfollow you and you'd still be royal. That's unchanging. That's real.
The Problem With Screen Validation
When you build your worth on likes and followers, here's what happens — and I've seen this play out in so many lives, including my own:
You perform instead of being real.
You post what gets engagement, not what's true. You curate instead of being authentic. And after a while, you lose track of which version is actually you.
You're constantly anxious.
Will this post do well? Am I losing followers? What if nobody engages? Your emotional state rides on a number that changes by the minute.
You can't be yourself.
You have to be the version of yourself that gets likes. And that's exhausting. It's like wearing a costume every single day.
You're never satisfied.
Because there's always more. More followers to get. More likes to chase. The goalposts keep moving and you never arrive.
You feel empty.
Because approval from strangers doesn't actually fill the hole in your heart. It anesthetizes it for a moment — but it never heals it.
John 12:43
"For they loved the praise of men more than the praise of God."
When you're chasing the praise of men — likes, followers, comments — you miss God's praise. And God's praise is the only one that matters. The only one that lasts.
What Actually Makes You Worthy
Let me shift your focus from the screen to what's real:
Who God says you are.
Loved. Chosen. Valuable. That's fixed. It was true before you ever posted anything, and it will be true long after every screen goes dark. God doesn't check your follower count before He decides to love you.
What you're building inside.
Character. Integrity. Kindness. Peace. Those things are real. They don't disappear when the algorithm changes. They're the substance of who you are when nobody's watching.
How you treat people.
Respect. Honesty. Generosity. The way you show up for the people in your actual life — that's what actually matters. Not how many strangers double-tapped your photo.
Your growth and progress.
Becoming more like Jesus. Healing from your past. Learning. Growing. That's real success. And nobody can scroll past that.
Your authenticity.
Being real. Being honest. Being yourself — the one God made, not the one the internet wants. That's rare. That's valuable. That's freedom.
The Freedom of Not Performing
Here's what happens when you stop seeking validation from a screen. And I can tell you from experience — it's like taking off a backpack you forgot you were wearing.
• You get to be yourself. Not the curated version. The real version.
• You get to post what matters to you, not what gets engagement.
• You get to rest. Stop checking. Stop waiting for validation.
• You get peace. Because your worth isn't on a screen that can change moment to moment.
• You get to hear God's voice instead of the noise of a thousand opinions.
John 5:44
"How can ye believe, which receive honour one of another, and seek not the honour that cometh from God only?"
How can you believe in yourself when you're seeking honor from people? You can't. But when you seek honor from God alone, you're free. Not free from caring what anyone thinks — free from needing their approval to know you matter.
Start Today
So here's what I want you to do — not someday, not when you feel ready, but starting right now:
Stop checking the engagement.
Post it and move on. Don't watch the likes come in. Break the loop. The number will be there later — but you don't need it.
Post what's real.
Not what gets engagement. What's true. Your actual life. Your actual thoughts. The real you.
Measure your worth by who God says you are.
Not by a number on a screen. Remind yourself daily: I am made in God's image. I am chosen. I am loved.
Take breaks from social media.
Give your brain a break from the validation feedback loop. A day. A weekend. See what it feels like to live unmeasured.
Remember what matters most.
One person's genuine love and respect matters more than a thousand strangers' likes. Invest in the real relationships in front of you.
Reflection Questions
- How much of your self-worth is tied to social media engagement? Be honest with yourself. No judgment — just awareness.
- What would you post if you didn't care about likes or followers? What would you say if nobody was counting?
- How would your life change if you believed God's opinion of you was enough? Really imagine it.
- What is one change you can make this week to stop seeking validation from a screen? One small step. Start there.
A Prayer
Father, help me stop seeking worth from a screen.
Help me believe that I am worthy because You made me. Because You love me. Because You chose me. Before I ever posted anything. Before anyone ever double-tapped my photo.
Free me from the need for others' approval. Give me peace that doesn't depend on likes or followers.
Help me be authentic. Real. Myself. Not a performed version. Not a curated version. The person You created me to be.
And help me remember every single day: Your opinion is the only one that matters. And You've already declared me loved, chosen, and enough.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Declarations to Hold Onto
Say these out loud. Let truth drown out the noise.
- My worth is not on a screen. It was given to me by God, and no algorithm can take it away.
- I am made in God's image. That is my identity — unchangeable and permanent.
- I am chosen, royal, and holy. A thousand unlikes can't touch what God has declared over me.
- I refuse to perform for approval. I choose authenticity over curation, freedom over likes.
- I seek honor from God alone. His praise is the only praise that fills the deepest place in me.
- I am free from the need for human approval. I rest in the unchanging love of my Father.
