Why This Book Exists
They removed Exodus from the Bible and handed what was left to enslaved people and called it Scripture.
My great-great-grandmother Mama Fanny received that version. On a plantation back porch in Alabama. Between worlds. Belonging to neither side. Told to obey, serve, accept, and wait for heaven.
She never got to hear the God I am introducing in this book.
This book exists because my grandmother Blanche — Mama Fanny's daughter, a Spelman College honors graduate — sat with me at a kitchen table and taught me the difference between what the Bible actually says and what people twist it to say.
This book is the continuation of that teaching.
Who This Book Is For
This book is for you if —
- You have ever been handed a version of God that left you feeling unseen.
- You have ever sat in a church and sensed that something was missing from what you were being taught.
- You have ever lived between worlds — too much of one thing for one room and not enough for another.
- You have ever carried a wound that started before you were born and did not know where it came from.
- You have ever asked — in the dark, in the quiet, before you had words for it — does God actually see me?
This book answers that question.
Why Pastor Nicole Wrote It
I am a sixth-generation daughter of the American South. My family's story begins with a West African woman working a field in Alabama. It moves through a child placed on a plantation back porch who belonged to neither world. It moves through Spelman College and a Morehouse doctor and twin beds where my mother shared a room with Mama Fanny as a little girl.
It moves through me.
Sitting in a dialysis chair in Peachtree Corners, Georgia. End-stage renal disease. Three sessions a week. A husband in a nursing home. A mother with dementia. A ministry I built largely alone.
Still here.
I wrote this book because the wound that started on Mama Fanny's back porch traveled four generations to reach me. And I wrote it because the faith traveled further. And I want you to know the God who was present in all of it.
The God they never showed Mama Fanny.
He was always there.
This book is about showing Him to you.

A Word From Pastor Nicole
My grandmother Blanche sat with me and opened the Scripture and showed me both sides. The truth. And the distortion. And she said — do not confuse them. This book is me keeping that promise. To her. And to you.
