Lord, You Are My Shield
And My Exceeding Great Reward
The promise that rewires how you think about protection, provision, and purpose.
God Is Enough
Real talk: You're probably looking for something to complete you.
Maybe it's a relationship. Maybe it's a career win. Maybe it's financial security. Maybe it's validation. Maybe it's success. Maybe it's recognition.
You're looking for something that will finally make you feel secure. Finally make you feel rewarded. Finally make you feel like everything is okay.
And here's what God says: "Stop looking. I'm your shield. I'm your exceeding great reward."
Not "I'll help you get those things." Not "I'll eventually give you what you're looking for."
I am your shield. I am your reward. I am enough. I am more than enough. Everything you're actually looking for, you find in Me.
This is not a verse about getting stuff. This is a verse about security and satisfaction being found in God, not in circumstances.
The Verse
Genesis 15:1 (NKJV)
"After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision, saying, 'Do not be afraid, Abram: I am your shield, your exceedingly great reward.'"
After This
Abram just came from a battle. He won, but he went to war. He's probably scared — thinking about enemies coming back, anxious about retaliation. And right then, God shows up. Not when Abram is peaceful. Right when Abram is afraid and vulnerable.
Do Not Be Afraid
First thing out of God's mouth: don't be afraid. Not 'don't worry, I'll fix it.' Not 'things will get better.' A direct command: stop being afraid. Why? Because what God's about to say makes fear irrelevant.
I Am Your Shield
A shield is protection. It's defense. It's what stands between you and harm. And God is saying: I am your protection. Not eventually. Not if you earn it. Right now. I am standing between you and danger.
Your Exceeding Great Reward
Reward is compensation. It's the prize. It's what makes the effort worthwhile. And God is saying: I am more than that. An exceeding one. More than you could imagine. Everything you're striving for — I am better.
God Is Your Shield
Four dimensions of divine protection
From Harm
There are dangers you don't even know about — situations that could have hurt you but didn't. That's God standing between you and harm.
From Fear
Fear is designed to keep you paralyzed and small. But when God says 'I am your shield,' you don't have to live in fear. You're protected.
From Being Alone
The worst vulnerability is facing things solo. But if God is your shield, you're never facing anything alone. You're shielded, not isolated.
From Defeat
Even if circumstances look bad, even if you're outnumbered, your shield is unbreakable. You cannot be defeated because God is standing for you.
God Is Your Reward
Better than anything you're chasing
Better Than Achievement
The promotion won't satisfy like His presence. The recognition won't fulfill like being loved by God. He is a greater reward than any accomplishment.
Better Than Possessions
Having everything and losing God is poverty. Having nothing and having God is the greatest wealth. He is greater than anything you could own.
Better Than Any Relationship
People can leave, hurt, and disappoint you. God never will. He is a greater reward than anything a relationship could offer.
Better Than Any Success
You're defined by status? God says: I see you, I know you, I value you beyond measure. That's greater than any earthly success.
What This Means for Your Life
When God is your shield and your reward, everything shifts.
Security
I need enough money to be safe. Enough savings. Enough security.
God is my shield. I'm protected. My ultimate security is in Him.
Satisfaction
Once I get this promotion, I'll be satisfied. Once I have this, I'll be happy.
God is my exceeding great reward. I already have what I'm looking for.
Identity
I am what I achieve. I am what I own. I am what people think of me.
I am loved by God. I am valued by God. I am God's treasure.
Relationships
This person has to complete me. They have to make me happy.
God is my reward. I choose people from wholeness, not desperation.
Courage
I'm too afraid to take risks. What if I fail? What if people judge me?
God is my shield. What can really harm me? I can be bold.
Peace
I'm stressed about the future. What if this falls apart?
God is my shield and my reward. I trust Him. I can be at peace.
The Beautiful Paradox
When you stop trying to find your reward elsewhere, the things you were chasing often come anyway — not because you're grasping for them, but because you're free to pursue them from a healthy place.
Relationships
When you stop needing people to complete you, you attract healthier relationships.
Success
When you stop needing success to validate you, you often achieve more — because you're not anxious.
Finances
When you stop needing money for security, you build better financial stability — because you're not desperate.
This is not magical thinking. This is practical reality. Freedom is the most powerful position for building a good life.

"I am satisfied in God."
"I do not need to be afraid."
"I have everything I need in God."

- I confess that I stop grasping for external rewards.
- I confess that I release my need for people to complete me.
- I confess that I stop performing for my worth.
- I confess that I live from abundance, not scarcity.
- I confess that I trust God completely.
Personal Reflections
What are you currently looking to as your reward? A person? A job? Money? Recognition?
What are you afraid of? What do you need protection from? What threats are you aware of?
If God was truly your shield, how would you live differently? What risks would you take? What fears would you release?
If God was truly your exceeding great reward, what would you stop chasing? What would you let go of?
Where in your life are you still performing for your worth? Where do you need to stop and rest in being loved?
What would change if you believed you already have the greatest reward? How would that shift your priorities?

Closing Prayer
Father God, I thank You that You are my shield. I thank You that I am protected. I thank You that I don't have to live in fear. I thank You that You are my exceeding great reward. I thank You that I am satisfied in You. I thank You that I don't have to keep searching elsewhere. Help me to truly believe this. Help me to stop looking for completion in people and possessions. Help me to rest in Your protection. Help me to be satisfied with You. Help me to live boldly because I'm shielded. Help me to live freely because I'm rewarded. Help me to show others what it looks like to have God as their shield and their exceeding great reward. In Jesus' name, Amen.
