Identity in Christ Communion

You are welcome here — not as the person you pretend to be, but as the person you really are. Whether you have struggled for years to believe you are loved, or you have let other people's words define your worth, or you look in the mirror and don't recognize the person staring back — this Communion Service was prepared for you.

Identity is one of the enemy's favorite battlefields. If he can convince you that you are unworthy, unloved, unforgivable, or irredeemable, he can keep you from walking in the fullness of who God says you are. But the cross settles the question of your identity once and for all. When Jesus died, your old self died with Him. When He rose, you rose with Him — a new creation. The old has gone. The new has come. That is not wishful thinking. It is a spiritual reality sealed in the blood of Christ.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!" — 2 Corinthians 5:17

Why This Communion Matters

Communion is the ultimate identity reorientation. When you hold the bread, you are holding the body of Christ — broken so that your old identity could be crucified with Him. When you hold the cup, you are holding the blood of the New Covenant — poured out so that you could be born again into a new identity as a child of God. This is not symbolic psychology. This is spiritual reality. You are literally participating in the death and resurrection of Jesus, and in that participation, your identity is being renewed.

Every time the enemy whispers that you are your past, Communion answers: "The old has gone." Every time shame tells you that you are your worst mistake, Communion answers: "The new has come." Every time fear says you will never change, Communion answers: "I am being transformed into His image from glory to glory." The Table is where identity is anchored — not in feelings, not in performance, not in what others think of you, but in what Christ has done for you and who He says you are.

Primary Scripture

2 Corinthians 5:17

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!"

Galatians 2:20

"I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me."

Read these verses again — slowly. Let them redefine who you know yourself to be.

Short Teaching

Paul's words in 2 Corinthians 5:17 are some of the most radical in all of Scripture: "If anyone is in Christ — new creation!" Not "improved." Not "trying harder." Not "on probation." New. The Greek word is kainos — new in kind, new in quality, something that has never existed before. You are not the old you with a religious makeover. You are a fundamentally new creation, brought into existence by the same power that spoke the universe into being.

This is not about self-esteem or positive thinking. This is about union with Christ. When Jesus died, you died. Your old identity — the one defined by sin, shame, failure, and the opinions of others — was crucified with Him. When Jesus rose, you rose. Your new identity — defined by righteousness, belovedness, purpose, and belonging — came alive with Him. The Christian life is not about becoming someone new. It is about living out who you already are in Christ.

Galatians 2:20 takes this even further: "I no longer live, but Christ lives in me." Your identity is not primarily about what you do, what you have accomplished, or what has been done to you. Your identity is Christ in you — the hope of glory. You are hidden with Christ in God. You are sealed with the Holy Spirit. You are a child of the Most High. Those are not metaphors. They are legal realities in the kingdom of God, ratified by the blood of Jesus.

Part One

The Bread

His Body — Broken So Your Old Self Could Die With Him

Prayer Over the Bread

Lord Jesus,

I hold this bread, and I remember Your body — broken for me. Your body carried the weight of my sin, my shame, and my false identities to the cross. When You died, my old self died with You. The version of me that was defined by failure, rejection, and unworthiness was nailed to that tree. It does not get to define me anymore. It is dead and buried.

I renounce the identities I have worn that You never gave me: unworthy, unlovable, unforgivable, broken beyond repair, too far gone. Those labels were nailed to the cross. They have no authority over me. I am a new creation in Christ. The old has gone. The new has come.

Thank You that Your broken body is the guarantee that my old self is dead. I do not have to drag its corpse around anymore. I am alive in You — fully, completely, irrevocably alive. Thank You, Jesus. I receive my new identity now. Amen.

Receive the Bread

Take the bread now. Eat it slowly. As you do, consciously receive the death of your old identity and the birth of your new life in Christ.

The Cup

His Blood — The Covenant That Defines Who You Are

Prayer Over the Cup

Lord Jesus,

I hold this cup, and I remember Your blood — the blood of the New Covenant. A covenant is a binding agreement that defines relationship. And through Your blood, I am now in covenant with the living God. I am not a stranger. I am not a beggar. I am not an outsider hoping to be let in. I am a son. I am a daughter. I am an heir of God and a co-heir with Christ.

Your blood speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Abel's blood cried out for justice. Your blood cries out for mercy, for adoption, for belonging. Because of Your blood, I am forgiven. Because of Your blood, I am righteous — not by my own efforts but by Your gift. Because of Your blood, I am loved with an everlasting love that nothing can undo.

I receive my full identity today. I am who You say I am. I am chosen, holy, and dearly loved. I am the righteousness of God in Christ. I am a new creation. I am a child of the King. I am a citizen of heaven. I am seated with Christ in heavenly places. No one and nothing can take that identity from me. It was purchased with blood — Your blood. And it cannot be revoked.

Thank You, Jesus. I receive the cup of the New Covenant — and the new identity it proclaims over my life. Amen.

Drink now. As you do, receive the fullness of your identity in Christ — chosen, forgiven, righteous, beloved, and sealed for eternity.

Closing Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this time at Your Table. Thank You that Your Word does not suggest I might be a new creation — it declares that I am. The old has gone. The new has come. I am not who I used to be. I am not what was done to me. I am not my failures or my successes. I am Yours — fully, completely, irrevocably Yours.

I leave this Table carrying the truth of who I am. When the enemy whispers lies about my identity, I will point to the bread and the cup. I died with Christ. I rose with Christ. My life is hidden with Christ in God. I am a new creation. I am Your child. I am loved. I am chosen. I am righteous. I am sealed for eternity.

Walk with me now, Holy Spirit. When I am tempted to find my identity in what I do or what others think of me, bring me back to the Table. Remind me that my identity is not in my performance — it is in Christ's finished work. Remind me that I am not who my past says I am — I am who God says I am. Let that truth sink deeper into my soul every day.
