Guided Communion Service
Marriage Communion
For couples seeking God's presence, healing, and deeper unity in their marriage covenant.
Welcome
You are welcome here — both of you, whether you are taking this Communion side by side or coming to the Table alone on behalf of your marriage. Whether your marriage is thriving and you want to cover it in prayer, or it is struggling and you are desperate for breakthrough — this Communion Service was prepared for you.
Marriage is a covenant, not a contract. A contract is built on mutual distrust — each party protecting themselves. A covenant is built on mutual surrender — two people giving themselves fully to one another, with God as the third strand. And when that third strand frays, the whole cord feels it. At this Table, you invite the Third Strand back to the center.
"Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." — Ecclesiastes 4:12
Opening Prayer
Father God,
We come before You together. Thank You for the gift of marriage — for the person beside us who has chosen to walk this life with us. We confess that we have not always loved perfectly. We have not always been patient or kind. We have sometimes treated this covenant like a contract, protecting ourselves instead of surrendering to one another.
Today we choose differently. Today we bring our marriage to Your Table. We invite You — the Third Strand — back to the center of this covenant. We invite Your presence into every room of our relationship: our communication, our intimacy, our finances, our conflicts, our dreams. Nothing is off-limits to You. Heal what is broken. Strengthen what is weak. Deepen what is shallow.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Primary Scripture
Ecclesiastes 4:9–12
"Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up. Also, if two lie down together, they will keep warm. But how can one keep warm alone? Though one may be overpowered, two can defend themselves. A cord of three strands is not quickly broken."
Read these verses again — slowly. If possible, read them aloud together.
Short Teaching
The image in Ecclesiastes is beautiful in its simplicity: a cord of three strands. You are one strand. Your spouse is the second. And God is the third. Notice — a cord of two strands is stronger than one, but it can still be broken. It is the third strand that makes the cord unbreakable.
When Communion is taken in the context of marriage, it is uniquely powerful. You are not just receiving the body and blood of Christ individually — you are inviting Christ Himself into your covenant. The bread represents His body, broken so that the broken places in your marriage could be healed. The cup represents His blood, poured out so that forgiveness could flow between you — forgiveness received and forgiveness extended.
If you are doing this Communion together, this is a sacred moment. You are standing — or kneeling — before the Lord as one. If you are taking Communion on behalf of a marriage that is struggling, or a spouse who is not yet walking with the Lord, you are standing in the gap — and God honors that. He sees your faith. He hears your prayers. And He is still in the business of restoring marriages.
Part One
The Bread
His Body — Broken to Heal Your Marriage
Prayer Over the Bread
Lord Jesus,
We hold this bread, and we remember Your body — broken for us. Your body was broken so that the broken places in our marriage could be healed. Every harsh word we have spoken. Every wall we have built. Every wound we have inflicted — intentionally or unintentionally. You carried all of it to the cross.
We receive healing for our marriage now. We receive restoration for the years the locusts have eaten. We receive fresh love where love has grown cold. We receive tenderness where hardness has settled in. We receive communication where silence has taken over. We receive intimacy where distance has crept in.
Thank You, Jesus. Your body was broken so our marriage could be whole. Amen.
Receive the Bread
Take the bread now. Eat it together if possible. As you do, receive the healing that Christ's body purchased for your marriage covenant.
Pause here. Take your time.
Part Two
The Cup
His Blood — The Covenant That Holds Yours
Prayer Over the Cup
Lord Jesus,
We hold this cup, and we remember Your blood — the blood of the New Covenant. Just as Your blood sealed an unbreakable covenant between God and humanity, we ask that it would seal our marriage covenant. Let forgiveness flow between us — the forgiveness we have received from You, and the forgiveness we extend to each other.
We plead Your blood over our marriage — over our communication, that we would speak the truth in love; over our intimacy, that we would continually choose one another; over our finances, that we would steward them in unity; over our home, that it would be a place of peace and not conflict; over our children, that they would see Christ in our love for each other.
Your blood speaks a better word. Not accusation — grace. Not division — unity. Not distance — closeness. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Receive the Cup
Drink now. Drink together if possible. As you do, receive the fullness of the New Covenant over your marriage — forgiveness, unity, and the presence of the Third Strand.
Pause here. Take your time.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this time at Your Table — together. Thank You for the body and blood of Jesus, and for what it means for our marriage. We believe that a cord of three strands is not quickly broken — and we have invited You to be the Third Strand again today.
We leave this Table differently than we came. Stronger. Closer. More aware of Your presence in our marriage. We choose each other again. We choose grace over grudges. We choose pursuit over distance. We choose covenant over convenience. We choose to build something that lasts — not in our own strength, but in Yours.
Walk with us now, Holy Spirit. In the ordinary moments — the Tuesday mornings, the dinner conversations, the disagreements — remind us that we belong to each other and to You. In Jesus' mighty name, Amen.
