Rest & Renewal for Caregivers
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." — Matthew 11:28
It is hard for a caregiver to rest — because the need does not stop when you stop, because the guilt shows up when you try to take a moment for yourself. But God neither slumbers nor sleeps. He is watching over them. You can step away and trust Him.
Short Declarations
Rest is not selfish. Rest is wisdom. I give myself permission to stop. God renews me as I rest. I trust that the person I care for is in God's hands when I step away. I receive rest without guilt. My body deserves recovery. My soul deserves stillness. Resting makes me a better caregiver. God does not require me to pour from empty. I rest and I am renewed.
A Prayer for Caregiver Rest
Father God, I need rest.
Real rest. Not just sleep — though I need that too. But genuine inner rest. The kind where the mind stops running through everything that needs to be done and the soul just breathes.
It is hard for a caregiver to rest.
Because the need does not stop when I stop. Because the guilt shows up when I try to take a moment for myself. Because I am always half-present even in my time away — wondering if everything is okay, thinking about what comes next.
So I ask You for something specific.
Give me the ability to truly rest when rest is possible. Quiet the guilt that tries to follow me into my moments of recovery. Help me trust that the person I care for is held by You even when I step away.
You are the God who neither slumbers nor sleeps. You are watching over them. You are present with them. I do not have to be present every moment for them to be safe.
So I release the weight — right now. And I receive genuine rest in its place.
In Jesus' name. Amen.
