Prayer When You Don't Know Who You Are
"Your life is now hidden with Christ in God." — Colossians 3:3
You used to know who you were. But through caregiving, crisis, or just doing what needed to be done for so long, that person feels lost. The roles that defined you have shifted, and the mirror shows a stranger. Your identity is not in what you've lost — it's in Christ. This prayer is for rediscovering who God says you are.
A Prayer When You Don't Know Who You Are
Father, I come to You in this strange, scary space between who I was and who I'm becoming. I don't recognize myself some days. The roles that used to define me have shifted or disappeared entirely. The energy I used to have is gone. The clarity about my purpose is foggy. And I'm scared — scared that I've lost myself for good, that the best version of me is behind me.
But Your Word says my life is hidden with Christ in You. That means my identity is not in what I do, who I care for, what I've accomplished, or what I've lost. It is in You. And what is in You cannot be taken by a diagnosis, a firing, a broken relationship, or a season of exhaustion. So I stop looking in the mirror of my circumstances to figure out who I am. I look to You.
Lord, tell me who I am. Speak louder than my fear, louder than my fatigue, louder than the voice that says I'll never feel like myself again. You say I am Your child — so I am Your child. You say I am Your handiwork — created on purpose, for a purpose, even in this season. You say I am a new creation — the old has gone, the new is here, even when I can't see it yet.
I release who I used to be into Your hands. I let go of the identity built on what I did, what I accomplished, and who I was before the crisis hit. I open my hands to receive who You say I am right now — not who I wish I still was, not who I fear I've become, but who You declare me to be in this season.
Help me rebuild my identity on the only foundation that lasts: Christ in me, the hope of glory. I am hidden in Him. I am known by Him. I am loved by Him. And that is enough. That is the core of who I am. Everything else — every role, every title, every accomplishment — is secondary. I am Yours, and that is the truest thing about me.
Thank You that I don't have to have it all figured out. Thank You that the gap between who I was and who I'm becoming is holy ground — the place where You do Your deepest work. I trust You in the gap. I trust You with my identity. I am who You say I am. In Jesus' name. Amen.
