Finding Purpose in Suffering

Father God, I'm asking "why." I've been asking it for a while. Why did this happen? Why me? Why now? Why does this pain feel so pointless? I want to believe that my suffering is not meaningless — that there is purpose hidden somewhere in this pain. But some days I can't see it, and I'm not sure I believe it.

I confess that I struggle with the notion that You "allow" suffering for a reason. That theology feels thin when you're the one hurting. I don't need platitudes — I need presence. I don't need explanations — I need to know You are with me. So meet me here, in the questions I can't answer and the purpose I can't yet see.

But I also ask this: don't let this pain be wasted. If there is meaning to be mined from this suffering, help me to find it. If there is someone else I can help because of what I've been through, lead me to them. If there is a depth of character being formed in me through this, don't let me resist it.

I look at the cross and I see that the worst thing that ever happened — the murder of the Son of God — became the means by which the world was saved. You didn't cause the cross, but You redeemed it into the greatest purpose imaginable. If You can do that with the worst injustice in history, You can do something with my suffering too.

I don't need to know the purpose today. I just need to trust that there is one — and that You are working even when I can't see it. Help me to hold on until I can.
