Spiritual Warfare & Discernment

Opening

I want to tell you something that changed my life.

It was before I got married. I was on an expressway in Atlanta—heavy traffic, rush hour, cars everywhere.

And my tire blew out.

Not just a flat. A blowout. While I'm driving. While I'm surrounded by traffic moving at highway speed.

I was terrified.

I managed to get to the shoulder, but I had no phone. No way to call for help. No protection from the traffic whizzing past me. I was alone, panicked, and I didn't know what to do.

And then—out of nowhere—a man appeared behind me.

He didn't ask. He didn't hesitate. He just started changing my tire. He knew exactly what to do. He was calm. He was kind.

And when he finished, I turned around to thank him, to offer him money, to do something.

But he was gone.

Completely gone. Vanished. Like he was never there.

And in that moment, I knew with absolute certainty: I had encountered an angel.

Not because I'm mystical or weird. But because something supernatural had just happened. Someone appeared when I needed help and disappeared when the help was done.

That's when I understood: Angels are real. And they're operating in our lives right now.

The Spiritual Realm Is More Real Than You Think

Here's what most people don't understand:

The physical world you see—the world with cars and buildings and people—that's not the most real thing.

It's actually the least real thing.

2 Corinthians 4:18

"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."

Read that carefully. The things you see—with your eyes, in the physical world—those are temporal. Temporary. They change. They fade. They end.

But the things you don't see—the spiritual realm, the realm of God, the realm where angels operate—those are eternal. They're permanent. They're real. They're lasting.

So when you're only focused on what you can see, you're missing the most important reality.

The spiritual realm—where angels exist and operate—is more real, more powerful, and more permanent than anything in the physical world.

What Angels Actually Are

The Greek word for angel is aggelos. It literally means "messenger."

The Hebrew word is malak. Also means "messenger."

So angels are God's messengers. God's sent ones.

They're not chubby babies on Valentine's Day cards. They're not fictional characters from movies.

Angels are powerful spiritual beings created by God to carry out God's will.

Hebrews 1:14

"Are they not all ministering spirits, sent forth to minister for them who shall be heirs of salvation?"

Angels are ministering spirits. They're sent to minister—to serve, to help, to protect—those who belong to God.

That includes you.

Right now, there are angels assigned to your life. Angels ministering to you. Angels working on your behalf.

You might not see them. But they're there.

Angels Are All Around Us

Here's something that should blow your mind:

There are more angels around you than you could ever imagine.

Listen to what Elisha's servant experienced:

2 Kings 6:16-17

"And he answered, Fear not: for they that be with us are more than they that be with them. And Elisha prayed, and said, Lord, I pray thee, open his eyes that he may see. And the Lord opened the eyes of the young man; and he saw: and, behold, the mountain was full of horses and chariots of fire round about Elisha."

The servant was surrounded by enemies. He was terrified. But Elisha prayed that his eyes would be opened. And suddenly, he could see the spiritual realm.

And what did he see? An entire army of angels. Horses and chariots of fire. All around them. Protecting them.

The angels were always there. The servant just couldn't see them until his spiritual eyes were opened.

That's what's happening around you right now. There are angels. Ministering spirits. Protecting you. Helping you. Working on your behalf.

You might not see them with your physical eyes. But they're there.

Angels Operate With Purpose

Angels aren't wandering around aimlessly. They have assignments. They have missions.

Psalm 91:11

"For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways."

God has given angels charge over you. That means angels are assigned to you. Your protection is their mission.

They're not just hanging around heaven playing harps. They're actively working in your life.

  • They're protecting you from dangers you don't even know about.
  • They're opening doors you didn't know existed.
  • They're bringing people into your life at exactly the right time.
  • They're removing obstacles before you even see them.

They're operating. Right now. In your life.

Angels Intervene in Physical Situations

Angels don't just operate in the spiritual realm. They operate in the physical realm.

They can affect physical circumstances. They can change physical situations.

That's what happened to me on that freeway.

I had a physical problem—a blown tire on a dangerous highway. I needed physical help.

And God sent an angel to physically help me.

Acts 12:7-10

"And, behold, the angel of the Lord came upon him, and a light shined in the prison: and he smote Peter on the side, and raised him up, saying, Arise up quickly. And his chains fell off from his hands. And the angel said unto him, Gird thyself, and bind on thy sandals. And so he did. And he saith unto him, Cast thy garment about thee, and follow me. And he went out, and followed him; and wist not that it was true which was done by the angel; but thought he was in a vision. When they were past the first and the second ward, they came unto the iron gate that leadeth unto the city; which opened to them of his own accord: and they went out, and passed on through one street; and forthwith the angel departed from him."

Peter was in prison. Bound in chains. About to be executed.

And an angel appeared, woke him up, his chains fell off, and the angel led him out of prison. Through locked gates that opened by themselves.

That's an angel operating in the physical world. Changing physical circumstances.

So when I say an angel changed my tire on that freeway, that's not strange. That's exactly what angels do.

How Angels Appear

Now, angels don't always appear the same way.

Sometimes they appear as men. Sometimes they appear in other forms.

But when they do appear to humans, they almost always say the same thing:

"Fear not."

Luke 1:26-30

"And in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent from God unto a city of Galilee, named Nazareth, To a virgin espoused to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David; and the virgin's name was Mary. And the angel came in unto her, and said, Hail, thou that art highly favoured, the Lord is with thee: blessed art thou among women. But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and cast in her mind what manner of salutation this should be. And the angel said unto her, Fear not."

Mary saw an angel and was afraid. And the angel's first words were: "Fear not."

Why? Because when you encounter the holy, the divine, the supernatural, the natural human response is fear.

But angels come in peace. Angels come to help. So their first message is always: Don't be afraid.

Angels Are God's Agents of Protection

One of the primary purposes of angels is protection.

Psalm 34:7

"The angel of the Lord encampeth round about them that fear him, and delivereth them."

The angel of the Lord camps around those who fear God. And delivers them.

That means you're surrounded. Protected. Delivered.

Angels create a barrier between you and harm. They guard you. They keep you safe.

Not because you're perfect. Not because you deserve it. But because God loves you and has assigned angels to protect you.

Think about the situations you've gotten out of. The close calls. The near-misses. The times something bad almost happened but didn't.

Chances are, an angel was involved.

  • A car almost hit you but didn't. An angel diverted it.
  • A bad decision almost destroyed your life but you felt a nudge not to do it. An angel whispered.
  • A dangerous person almost hurt you but turned and walked away. An angel stood in the way.

Angels are protecting you constantly.

Angels Operate Behind the Scenes

Most of the time, you won't see angels.

They operate behind the scenes. In the spiritual realm. Doing their work without fanfare or announcement.

Most of the protection they provide, you'll never know about.

Most of the doors they open, you'll never connect to an angel.

Most of the obstacles they remove, you'll just think you got lucky.

But they're working. Constantly. On your behalf.

Hebrews 13:2

"Be not forgetful to entertain strangers: for thereby some have entertained angels unawares."

Some people have entertained angels without even knowing it.

You might have helped an angel without knowing it was an angel.

You might have been helped by an angel without knowing it was an angel.

Angels operate in the mundane. In the ordinary. In the everyday moments of your life.

My Encounter Changed Everything

When that angel changed my tire and disappeared, something shifted in me.

I stopped only believing in the physical world I could see.

I started understanding that there's a whole realm of reality—a spiritual realm—that's more real and more powerful than anything I could see with my eyes.

I started paying attention to God's presence. To divine appointments. To unexplained help. To people who appeared exactly when I needed them and then vanished.

I started understanding that I'm never alone. That I'm constantly protected. That God's angels are working on my behalf.

And that changed how I live. It changed how I pray. It changed how I trust God.

Because I knew—I knew—that the spiritual realm is real. That angels are real. And that God cares enough about me to send His messengers to protect me.

Angels Exist in Scripture

If you want to be absolutely sure angels are real, look at Scripture.

Angels appear throughout the Bible. In the Old Testament. In the New Testament. To kings and peasants. To men and women. To people who were holy and people who were broken.

Abraham was visited by angels.
Jacob wrestled with an angel.
Moses encountered angels at the burning bush.
Joshua met the commander of God's army (an angel).
Gideon was visited by an angel.
Mary was told by an angel she would have a Son.
Joseph was warned by angels multiple times.
The disciples saw angels at Jesus' resurrection.
Peter was freed by an angel.
Philip was directed by an angel.

Angels appear constantly throughout Scripture. Not as mystical ideas or metaphors. As actual beings who showed up, spoke, and affected circumstances.

If angels were real then, they're real now.

Because God doesn't change. God's methods don't change. The spiritual realm doesn't change.

Angels are still operating. Right now. In your life.

The Invitation

So here's what I want you to understand:

You're not alone.

You're not unprotected.

You're not forgotten.

God has assigned angels to your life. Powerful spiritual beings whose sole purpose is to minister to you, protect you, guide you, and help you.

They're operating right now. In the spiritual realm that's more real than anything you can see.

And sometimes—when God deems it necessary—they'll show up in the physical realm too.

Just like an angel showed up on that Atlanta freeway to change my tire.

Angels are real. They're here. They're helping you.

And when you truly understand that, everything changes.

Reflection Questions

  1. Have you experienced something unexplainable that might have been an angel? What was it?
  2. How would your life change if you truly believed you were surrounded by angels right now?
  3. What situation in your life right now needs angelic protection or intervention? How can you ask God to send His angels?
  4. What stops you from believing in the spiritual realm as much as the physical realm? How can you shift that?

Prayer

Father, open my eyes to the spiritual realm. Help me understand that angels are real. Help me comprehend that they're operating in my life right now.

Thank You for assigning angels to protect me, guide me, and help me. Thank You for their constant work on my behalf.

Give me faith to trust in what I can't see. Help me understand that the spiritual is more real than the physical.

Send Your angels to surround me. Protect me. Guide me. Do what needs to be done in the spiritual realm so that my life reflects Your purposes.

Open my eyes to recognize when angels have been at work. Help me be sensitive to the spiritual realm.

I believe in angels. I believe You care about me enough to send them. I believe they're here.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.
