The Dolphin and the Pufferfish
There is a phenomenon in the animal kingdom that has always struck me as profoundly spiritual. Young dolphins have been observed deliberately chewing on pufferfish — not to eat them, but to get high. Pufferfish release a neurotoxin called tetrodotoxin when threatened. In small doses, this toxin does not kill the dolphin. It induces a trance-like, altered state. The dolphins pass the pufferfish around like a drug, chewing just enough to get the effect, then letting it go.
Scientists have documented this. They've watched dolphins float just below the surface in what they describe as a "trance-like state" after chewing on the pufferfish, apparently fascinated by their own reflections.
When I first learned about this, I thought: This is exactly what the enemy does to people. He offers an altered state — a counterfeit supernatural experience — and convinces them it's enlightenment when it's actually toxin.
The Counterfeit Supernatural
Here is a truth you must understand: The supernatural is real. Not all of it is from God. The enemy has a supernatural realm too. He can produce experiences. He can generate feelings. He can simulate peace, euphoria, even what feels like "encounters with the divine." And people who don't know how to test the spirits will swallow the toxin thinking it's revelation.
"Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world."

The Pufferfish Principle
The pufferfish principle works like this: The enemy offers you something that mimics a genuine spiritual experience. It feels real. It feels transcendent. You float in a trance-like state, staring at your own reflection, convinced you're having an encounter with God. But the source is toxin — not truth.
How do you know the difference? Here are the tests:
1. Does It Exalt Jesus or the Experience?
A genuine encounter with the Holy Spirit will always exalt Jesus Christ. It will point away from the experience and toward the Savior. The counterfeit will make you chase the experience itself — the feeling, the high, the altered state. If you're more in love with the experience than with Jesus, something is wrong.
2. Does It Produce the Fruit of the Spirit or the Works of the Flesh?
Galatians 5 gives us a clear diagnostic. The Holy Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. A counterfeit spirit produces confusion, division, pride, sensuality, addiction, and a hunger for more of the experience rather than more of God.
3. Does It Line Up With Scripture?
The Holy Spirit never contradicts the Word of God. If the "revelation" you received contradicts Scripture — even in subtle ways — the source is not God. The Spirit who inspired the Scriptures will never contradict the Scriptures.
4. Does It Lead to Holiness or License?
A genuine encounter with God leads to repentance, holiness, and a deeper hunger for righteousness. A counterfeit experience gives you permission to sin — it makes you feel "free" to do what Scripture forbids because you've had a "spiritual experience" that overrides the Bible. That is a lie.
5. Does It Leave You Clear or Confused?
God is not the author of confusion. A genuine encounter with Him brings clarity, peace, and direction. The counterfeit leaves you disoriented, chasing the next experience, never quite sure what you experienced or what it means. 1 Corinthians 14:33 says God is not a God of disorder but of peace.
The Danger of Chasing Altered States
Across cultures and religions, people have always pursued altered states of consciousness — through drugs, meditation techniques, chanting, breathwork, psychedelics, and occult rituals. Many report profound experiences. And I do not deny that those experiences feel real. But feeling real does not mean the source is God.
The enemy knows that humans are wired for transcendence. God created us to know Him, to encounter Him, to experience His presence. And when people don't know how to access the real thing, the enemy is happy to offer a substitute. The substitute feels similar enough to fool you — but it opens spiritual doors you don't want opened.
If you open the door to altered states without testing the spirit behind them, you will eventually find something on the other side of that door. And it will not be God.
A Prayer for Discernment
Father, give me discernment. Help me to test every spirit and every experience against Your Word. I do not want a counterfeit. I do not want to be like the dolphin chewing the pufferfish — intoxicated by something that is poisoning me.
Teach me to recognize Your voice. Let Your Holy Spirit be the only Spirit I welcome into my life. Close every door I have opened to counterfeit spiritual experiences. I renounce every altered state that did not come from You.
Fill me with Your genuine presence. Let me be satisfied with You — not chasing experiences, but knowing the One who is the source of all true revelation.
