Grace Hit Harder

Life hit hard. Grace hit harder. And by the grace of God, I am still here.

I am still here. Not because everything worked out. Because I decided to keep living even when everything did not. That is the whole testimony of my life, and it is the whole testimony of the book. What I want to do here is show you what grace actually is, because I think most people have too small a definition of it to survive on.

It Is Not a Guarantee That Things Go Well

Grace is not a promise that the hard thing stops happening. If that were the definition, I would have to tell you I never received any, because my kidneys still failed and my husband still had a stroke and the hard things kept arriving on schedule.

And It Is Not Only for the People Who Have It Together

And grace is not a luxury for people who have their lives figured out. Grace is for the ones who do not. That is the entire point of the word. Unmerited favor. Favor you did not earn, arriving for people who could not have earned it.

It Is Sufficiency, Not Rescue

Second Corinthians 12:9 says, and he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Notice what God said and what He did not say. He did not say, I will remove it. Paul asked three times for removal and did not get it. He said, my grace is sufficient. Meaning, there will be enough. Not enough to make it stop. Enough to carry you through it. That reframes the entire question. You have been asking whether God will take it away. The promise on offer is that He will be enough inside it.

It Is Showing Up on the Days It Costs Everything

And grace is not abstract. It shows up. Grace is about showing up on the days when showing up costs everything. It is about reminding you that you are still alive. That you are still here. That you are still worth fighting for. Sometimes it comes as a person. Sometimes as a practice. Sometimes as a belief that holds when nothing else does. And sometimes it is simply waking up one more morning and deciding to keep going.

And It Is New Every Morning

And Lamentations 3:22 says, it is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness. Read the first part carefully. It is of the Lord's mercies that we are not consumed. That verse assumes something was consuming. The writer is standing in ruins, and the testimony is not that the fire never came. It is that he was not burned up in it. That is grace. Not the absence of the fire. The presence of the One who kept you from being consumed by it.

It Outlasts the Hard Thing

And here is why I say grace hits harder. Because the hard thing has a limit and grace does not. Second Corinthians 4:17 calls it our light affliction, which is but for a moment, and sets it against a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory. Now Paul was beaten, shipwrecked, and imprisoned, so he was not minimizing suffering out of ignorance. He was weighing. And on the scale, one side is temporary and the other is eternal.

It Reaches Where the Damage Went

And grace reaches further in than the damage did. Romans 5:20 says, where sin abounded, grace did much more abound. Much more abound. Grace does not merely match the damage. It exceeds it. Whatever came at you, grace came with more.

And It Does Not Depend on Your Performance

And here is the part that makes it survivable. Grace does not run on your strength, so a bad week does not interrupt the supply. On the days you have no faith to speak of, no energy, no words, the supply is unaffected, because it was never coming out of you.

So when you are in the middle of something hard, listen for grace. It is coming. It might look different than you expect. It might sound different than you hoped. But it is coming. And it very often arrives in a form so ordinary you could miss it. A meal. A message at the right moment. A song. Somebody who did not have to call and called.

Receive it without qualifying. Take it without arguing that you do not deserve it, because that is the whole definition. Nobody deserves it. That is what makes it grace instead of wages.

And then do the part that is yours, which is smaller than you think and more important than you know. Decide to keep living. Not to feel better. Not to have answers. Just to keep going one more day. That is what I did. And that is the only reason I can write any of this.

So let me bring it home. The hard thing hit you with everything it had. And still, grace hit harder. Not because the hard thing stopped. Not because everything got fixed. But because you learned something you could not have learned any other way: you can survive this. Life hit hard. Grace hit harder. And by the grace of God, I am still here. And so, by that same grace, are you.
