What Are You Doing Here?
The Cave at Horeb, the Question God Keeps Asking, and the Script That Runs on a Loop in Your Head

Part One: The Cave at Horeb
After the angel fed him twice, Elijah traveled forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mountain of God — the same mountain where Moses received the Ten Commandments. He went to the place where God had spoken before, looking for God to speak again. And when he arrived, he went into a cave and spent the night there.
Then the word of the Lord came to him, and God asked him a question: "What are you doing here, Elijah?"
Now, God knew exactly what Elijah was doing there. God doesn't ask questions because He lacks information. He asks questions because He wants us to hear our own answer. He wants us to speak out loud the script that has been playing in our heads. Because sometimes you don't know what you believe until you hear yourself say it.
Part Two: The Script Elijah Was Running
Elijah's answer in 1 Kings 19:10 reveals the script that had been playing in his mind on repeat: "I have been very zealous for the Lord God of hosts; for the children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars, and killed Your prophets with the sword. I alone am left; and they seek to take my life."
Let me break down what Elijah was really saying. "I have been very zealous for the Lord" — I worked so hard. I gave everything. I was faithful when no one else was. "The children of Israel have forsaken Your covenant" — the people You called me to serve have rejected You and Your word. My ministry didn't produce the results I expected. "I alone am left" — I am completely alone. No one understands. No one stands with me. Everyone else has either abandoned the faith or been killed. "They seek to take my life" — and now they're trying to kill me too. After everything I've done, this is what I get.
That is the script of the juniper tree. I worked so hard. Nobody appreciated it. I'm all alone. And now I'm under attack. Sound familiar?
Notice that Elijah's script contained partial truth and significant distortion. Had he been zealous? Yes. Had Israel forsaken the covenant? Yes. Were the prophets killed? Yes. Was Jezebel seeking his life? Yes. But was he alone? Absolutely not. There were seven thousand others who had not bowed to Baal. And God was about to tell him so — but not yet. First, God was going to show Elijah something about Himself.
Part Three: God Asks Twice
After the wind, the earthquake, the fire, and the still small voice — which we'll cover in Part 5 — God asks Elijah the exact same question again: "What are you doing here, Elijah?" And Elijah gives the exact same answer. Word for word. The same script. The same complaint. The same distortion.
Why did God ask twice? Because the first time Elijah answered, he hadn't really heard himself. He was still in the cave, still in the script, still in the distortion. The wind, earthquake, fire, and whisper were not just a display of God's power — they were a therapeutic intervention. They were God saying, "Let Me show you who I really am, so you can see who you really are. You think you're alone? Let Me show you that I am in the whisper, not just the fire. You think your ministry failed? Let Me show you that I'm not finished."
And yet after all of that, Elijah repeated the same answer. God didn't rebuke him for it. He just moved on to the next step — the correction, the commissioning, the companion. Some of us need to hear ourselves say the lie out loud more than once before we're ready to receive the truth. God is patient enough to let us.
What God Was Teaching Me
God was teaching me that He asks questions not because He lacks information but because I need to hear my own answer. He was showing me the script that plays on a loop when I'm depleted — the partial truths and significant distortions that sound so convincing in the cave. And He was reminding me that He is patient enough to ask the question twice, letting me hear myself say the lie again before He gently corrects it.
