Everybody Can't Go

Growth Requires Release — and You're Allowed to Go Anyway

From the Series: WHAT THEY KNEW — The Wisdom, Faith, and Sayings That Raised Us

The Memory

You were growing. Moving forward. Changing. Becoming something new. And you wanted to take everyone with you. You wanted your old friends to understand your new life. You wanted your family to grow the way you were growing. You wanted your community to change with you.

But they didn't. Some stayed behind. Some refused to grow. Some couldn't see where you were going. And you had to choose: Go anyway, or stay stuck.

An elder said softly: "Everybody can't go."

It wasn't harsh. It was truthful. Some people can't make the journey. And you have to be okay with that.

The Saying

"Everybody can't go."

It means: Not everyone will go with you where you're going. Not everyone can handle your growth. Not everyone is ready for change. Not everyone is meant for the next chapter. Some people are for this season. Some are for life. But everybody can't go with you. Sometimes love means letting them stay behind. And going anyway.

The World These Words Were Born Into

Black Southern families understood that growth sometimes meant leaving. Leaving the neighborhood to get an education. Leaving family dynamics to heal. Leaving old patterns to create new ones. Leaving people who wanted you to stay the same. But they also understood that this was hard. That guilt came with it. That you didn't stop loving people just because you couldn't bring them with you.

But they also understood: Everybody can't go. And if you wait for everyone, you won't go anywhere.

What They Were Really Teaching

Growth requires release. You can't move forward while holding onto everyone.

Not everyone will understand. Some people will see your growth as rejection of them. It isn't. But they won't understand that.

You can't sacrifice your future for people's comfort. Your growth matters.

Seasons matter. Some people are for seasons. Some are for life. Don't confuse the two.

Guilt is sometimes part of growth. You might feel guilty for growing when others didn't. That's normal. Don't let it stop you.

What Scripture Says

"No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God." — Luke 9:62

You can't move forward while looking back.

"It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery." — Galatians 5:1

Don't go back to what you've escaped. Even for people you love.

Jesus had to leave. He left His mother, His siblings, His friends from His hometown. Not because He stopped loving them. But because where He was going, they couldn't go. Jesus teaches us that growth sometimes requires separation.

Practical Application

When you're growing and others aren't: Grieve. It's okay to be sad. But don't stop growing.

When people want you to stay the same: You can love them and still change.

When you have to leave people behind: Do it with grace. Do it with love. But do it.

When you're the one being left behind: Rather than resenting their growth, take it as inspiration for your own.

When people judge you for growing: Remember that their judgment is about their discomfort, not about you.

A Prayer

Father, thank You for growth. Thank You for the people who grew with me. Thank You for the people I had to leave behind.

Forgive me for the guilt I carried for outgrowing people. Forgive me for staying stuck out of loyalty.

Help me move forward even when others can't. Help me love people while also leaving them. Help me not resent people for not being able to go with me.

Help me celebrate people's growth even when it means they're leaving.

In Jesus's name, Amen.

Declaration

I grow at my own pace.

I do not stay stuck for anyone.

I can love people and still move forward.

I release the guilt of outgrowing people.

I celebrate people's growth even when it separates us.

Everybody can't go.

And I go anyway.

Pointing to Jesus

Jesus had to leave His family to do His work. He had to leave His friends. He had to leave His life as He knew it. Not because He stopped loving them. But because where He was going, He had to go alone.

Jesus teaches us that sometimes the most loving thing you can do is go. Even if others can't follow.

The Final Word

There is a chapter you're being called into. A growth that's waiting for you. A change that's possible. But you're waiting. Waiting for everyone to be ready. Waiting for approval. Waiting for someone to go with you.

But everybody can't go. And you're allowed to go anyway. You don't need everyone's permission. You don't need everyone's understanding. You just need to go.

Some people will follow. Some won't. That's okay. Grow anyway.
