The Memory
You were in the middle of it. The loss. The pain. The struggle. It felt permanent. It felt like this was your life now. This was how it would always be. You couldn't imagine a time when this wouldn't be your reality. The pain was so present, so heavy, so consuming.
But an elder looked at you and said quietly: "Trouble don't last always."
And something shifted. Not the trouble. The trouble was still there. But your perspective changed. If trouble doesn't last always, then this isn't forever. Then I will survive this. Then there will be a time when this is over.
The Saying
"Trouble don't last always."
It means: Whatever you're facing, it will end. Suffering is not permanent. Pain has an expiration date. Hardship is not your eternal address. This is not denying that trouble is real. Or that it's hard. Or that it hurts. It's saying: It won't be like this forever. You will come through this. There will be an after. This is a message of hope for people in the middle of their worst moments.
The World These Words Were Born Into
Black Southern people have known trouble. Deep trouble. Systemic trouble. The kind of trouble that doesn't have a quick fix. But they have also learned the truth of this saying. They have survived slavery's aftermath. They have survived segregation. They have survived violence and injustice and systems designed to destroy them. And they are still here. They know from lived experience: Trouble don't last always. But you have to survive long enough for it to end.
What They Were Really Teaching
Endurance. You can survive this. You can make it through.
Hope. There is an end to this trouble. There will be a time after this.
Perspective. This moment is not your entire life. This pain is not your eternal reality.
Faith. Faith that God is with you in the trouble. Faith that He brings you through it.
Suffering has a season. Seasons change. Winter becomes spring. Trouble becomes peace.
What Scripture Says
"The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all." — Psalm 34:19
Troubles come. But deliverance comes too.
"Weeping may stay for the night, but rejoicing comes in the morning." — Psalm 30:5
There is a morning coming. After the night, there is a morning.
"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all." — 2 Corinthians 4:17
Even in the perspective of eternity, troubles are momentary.
Jesus suffered. In the garden, He asked if the cup could be taken from Him. But He also knew it wouldn't last always. The cross would not be the end. The resurrection would come.
Practical Application
When you're in trouble: Survive. Do what you need to do to make it through the day. The hour. The moment.
When you're tempted to give up: Remember that this trouble is not forever. There will be an end. There will be an after.
When you're suffering with someone: Help them believe that the trouble won't last. Be their hope until they can find their own.
When the trouble ends: Remember. You survived. You came through. You made it.
A Prayer
Father, thank You for bringing me through troubles I thought would destroy me. Thank You for showing me that trouble does have an end. Thank You for being with me in the middle of the hardest times.
Forgive me for the times I gave up too soon. Forgive me for losing hope before the deliverance came.
Help me endure the troubles I'm facing now. Help me remember that this won't last forever. Help me be hope for others who are in the middle of their trouble.
Help me never forget: You always deliver.

I can endure this trouble.

I trust God to deliver me.

Jesus endured trouble. He was arrested, tortured, crucified. But that was not the end. The resurrection came. The trouble did not last always.
Jesus teaches us that even in the darkest moments, there is a resurrection waiting. There is a morning coming. There is deliverance. There is an end to the trouble.

You're in trouble right now. Real trouble. Hard trouble. The kind that makes you wonder if you'll survive it. But you will. Because trouble don't last always.
