Moving Forward From Mistakes

You can't change the past — but you can change the future.

You made a choice and you're never going to get over it. You replay it constantly. You imagine how different things would be. You're angry at yourself. You believe you destroyed your life. But regret is a thief. It steals your present and holds it hostage to your past.

Primary Scriptures

1 John 1:9 (NIV)

The Foundation of Forgiveness

If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.

Isaiah 43:18-19 (NIV)

God Is Doing Something New

Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?

Philippians 3:13-14 (NIV)

Pressing Forward

But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

Romans 8:1 (NIV)

No Condemnation

Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

Psalm 103:12 (NIV)

Your Sins Are Gone

As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.

The Real Teaching

You can't change what you did. But you can change what you do next. Regret becomes useful when it teaches you something. When it redirects you. When it causes change. Otherwise it's just punishment. And God doesn't want you to live in punishment. He wants you to learn and move on.

What This Looks Like

You said something mean years ago and you're still thinking about it. You made a bad decision and you've never forgiven yourself. You hurt someone and you believe you're a bad person because of it. You're defined by your mistake instead of learning from it.

What to Do

  1. Accept it. You did it. You can't undo it.
  2. Apologize if possible. If not, apologize to God.
  3. Forgive yourself. God did. You should too.
  4. Learn from it. What does this teach you?
  5. Move forward. Stop replaying it.
  6. Remember: You are not your worst moment.

Biblical Truth Summary

Regret becomes useful when it teaches you something — when it redirects you and causes change. Otherwise it's just punishment. God has already forgiven you. You are not your worst moment. Your future is not determined by your past.

Personal Declaration

I declare that I forgive myself. I am not my worst moment. I learn and move forward. I release regret. My future is not determined by my past — God is doing a new thing.

Prayer

Father, help me forgive myself. Help me accept what I did. Help me learn from it. Help me move forward. Help me stop punishing myself. In Jesus's name, Amen.
