Being Present Again

The people in front of you deserve more than the back of your phone.

You reach for your phone before your feet hit the floor. You scroll through bed while your spouse sleeps next to you. Your kids are talking and you're nodding — but you didn't hear a word. Technology is a tool — but it's also a thief. It steals your attention, your presence, and your peace. It's time to take them back.

The Real Teaching

Your phone was designed to be addictive. Every notification, every refresh, every "like" is engineered to keep you coming back. But you were not designed to live distracted. God created you for presence — with Him, with your family, with the life happening right in front of you. Technology is a servant, not a master. If you can't put it down, it's not a tool anymore — it's a chain.

What This Looks Like

You check your phone first thing in the morning — before prayer, before family, before anything. You feel anxious when you can't find your phone. You scroll for "five minutes" and lose an hour. Your kids have to compete with a screen for your attention. This isn't about willpower — it's about worship. Whatever gets your first and best attention gets your heart.

What to Do

  1. Start your day with God, not your phone. No screens for the first 30 minutes.
  2. Create phone-free zones. Dinner table. Bedroom. Church.
  3. Turn off non-essential notifications. You don't need to know every like.
  4. Set a timer. When the timer goes off, the phone goes down.
  5. Replace scrolling with something real. A book. A walk. A conversation.
  6. Ask: "Who am I ignoring right now?" Then put the phone down and look at them.

Biblical Truth Summary

Be still and know that He is God. You were made for presence — not distraction. Whatever masters your attention masters your life. Put the phone down. Look up. The life you're scrolling past is the one you're living.

Prayer

Father, forgive me for the hours I've given to screens that belonged to You and to the people You've given me. Help me be still. Help me be present. Break the hold technology has on my attention and redirect my heart to what truly matters. In Jesus's name, Amen.
