Tenderness & Compassion

The Lord is gracious and compassionate — slow to anger and rich in love.

The world can make you hard. Pain, disappointment, and betrayal have a way of building walls around your heart. But God's nature is tenderness — and He invites you to receive His compassion and extend it to others. These Scriptures reveal the soft heart of a strong God.

Father's Compassion

As a father has compassion on his children, so the Lord has compassion on those who fear him; for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

Because of the Lord's great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

The Real Teaching

God's compassion is not a side note — it is His character. Psalm 103 says He has compassion like a father has compassion on his children. And He remembers something crucial: "we are dust." He knows your frame. He knows you are fragile. His tenderness is not condescension — it is understanding. The God who formed you knows exactly what you are made of.

What This Looks Like

You have been hurt — and your instinct is to protect yourself. To close off. To stop feeling so you stop hurting. But Colossians 3:12 calls you to clothe yourself with compassion. Not as a feeling — as a choice. You put it on like clothing. And Lamentations 3 reminds you that God's compassions are not a one-time event — they are new every morning. The supply never runs out.

What to Do

  1. Receive God's compassion first. You cannot pour out what you have not received. Let Him love you tenderly.
  2. Remember you are dust. Be gentle with yourself. God remembers your frame — you should too.
  3. Wake up to new mercies. Every morning His compassions are new. Yesterday's failures don't exhaust today's supply.
  4. Put on compassion intentionally. Colossians says "clothe yourselves" — it's an active choice, not a passive feeling.
  5. Look at people like Jesus does. He saw crowds and had compassion because they were "harassed and helpless." Ask for His eyes.
  6. Forgive as you have been forgiven. Compassion and forgiveness go together. You have been forgiven much — let that fuel your mercy toward others.
