Guided Communion Service
Friendship Communion
When loneliness has been your companion — Jesus meets you at the Table, the Friend who sticks closer than a brother.
Welcome
You are welcome here — exactly as you are. Whether you are in a season of isolation, recovering from a friendship that ended painfully, grieving a friend who is no longer here, or simply longing for the kind of deep connection that seems so rare — this Communion Service was prepared for you.
Friendship is one of God's most profound gifts. He designed us for connection — for the kind of relationship where someone knows your story, your struggles, your dreams, and still chooses to stay. But here is what we sometimes forget in our loneliness: Jesus Himself calls us friends. Not servants. Not acquaintances. Friends. And He demonstrated the greatest kind of friendship — laying down His life for us.
"There is a friend who sticks closer than a brother." — Proverbs 18:24
Opening Prayer
Father God,
I come before You in the name of Jesus Christ. Thank You that I do not have to earn Your friendship — it is already given. Thank You that You are not a distant deity but a Father who draws near, a Son who calls me friend, and a Spirit who dwells within me as my constant Companion.
Lord, I bring before You the ache for connection. The friendships that have faded. The betrayal that still stings. The loneliness that settles in even when I am surrounded by people. I bring You the part of me that wonders if I am too much — or not enough — to be truly known and loved.
I quiet my heart now. I set aside every distraction, every comparison, every memory of friendship wounds. For these next few minutes, I fix my eyes on the One who has never left me, never betrayed me, and never will. Meet me at this Table, Lord. Be the Friend I need.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
Primary Scripture
Proverbs 18:24
"One who has unreliable friends soon comes to ruin, but there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother."
John 15:13–15
"Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends. You are my friends if you do what I command. I no longer call you servants, because a servant does not know his master's business. Instead, I have called you friends, for everything that I learned from my Father I have made known to you."
Read these verses again — slowly. Let the weight of being called a friend of God settle in your spirit.
Short Teaching
Proverbs 18:24 contains a remarkable promise: there is a friend who sticks closer than a brother. Human friendships, as precious as they are, can fail. People move away. People change. People disappoint us — and we disappoint them. But there is one friendship that does not depend on proximity, performance, or even reciprocity. Jesus sticks closer than a brother.
And then in John 15, Jesus escalates this truth to something almost incomprehensible. He looks at His disciples — men who would soon abandon Him, deny Him, and hide in fear — and He calls them friends. Not servants. Not followers. Friends. He chose the word deliberately. A servant obeys without knowing the master's heart. A friend is brought into the inner circle. A friend knows what the master is thinking. And Jesus says that is what He has done for us — He has made known to us everything the Father has given Him.
The cross is the ultimate proof of this friendship. "Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one's life for one's friends." Jesus didn't just talk about being a friend — He proved it. When you take Communion, you are remembering the moment when the Friend who sticks closer than a brother demonstrated the greatest friendship the universe has ever seen. His body was broken so the wall between you and God would be removed forever. His blood was poured out so you could be brought into the inner circle — not as a servant, but as a friend.
If you have been wounded by friendship — betrayal, abandonment, being forgotten — bring that to the Table today. Jesus knows what it is to be betrayed by a friend. Judas walked with Him for three years and then sold Him for thirty pieces of silver. Peter swore he would never deny Him and then did it three times before the rooster crowed. Jesus understands friendship wounds. And He offers you a friendship that will never end, never betray, and never walk away.
Part One
The Bread
His Body — Broken So You Would Never Be Alone
Prayer Over the Bread
Lord Jesus,
I hold this bread, and I remember Your body — broken for me. You called me friend, and then You proved it. You didn't just speak words of friendship from a safe distance. You entered into my pain, took on my humanity, and let Your body be broken so that the wall of separation between me and God would be torn down forever.
Because of Your broken body, I am no longer a stranger. I am no longer on the outside. I have been brought near — into the family of God, into the inner circle, into friendship with the Creator of the universe. I receive that friendship now. I receive belonging. I reject the lie that I am alone, that I am unwanted, that I am too much or not enough. You chose me. You called me friend. That settles it.
Heal the places in my heart that have been wounded by human friendships. Close the doors that betrayal opened. Restore my ability to trust, to connect, to love again. And in the waiting — when human friendship feels scarce — be more than enough.
Thank You, Jesus. Your body was broken for me. I receive the friendship it purchased. Amen.
Receive the Bread
Take the bread now. Eat it slowly. As you do, consciously receive the friendship of Jesus — the One who sticks closer than a brother and proved it at the cross.
Pause here. Take your time.
Part Two
The Cup
His Blood — The Covenant of Unbreakable Friendship
Prayer Over the Cup
Lord Jesus,
I hold this cup, and I remember Your blood — the blood of the New Covenant. A covenant is the deepest kind of bond, and You cut this covenant with Your own blood. You didn't seal it with handshake or contract — You sealed it with Your life. This is a friendship that cannot be broken, a bond that death itself could not sever.
Your blood speaks a better word than the blood of Abel. Abel's blood cried out from the ground for justice — and justice was right. But Your blood cries out mercy. Your blood cries out reconciliation. Your blood cries out, "Come home. You belong. You are wanted. You are loved." I receive that word over every place in my heart that has been marked by rejection, abandonment, or the ache of being forgotten.
By Your blood, I am brought into the family of God. By Your blood, I have constant access to the Father. By Your blood, the Holy Spirit dwells inside me — the ever-present Friend who never leaves. I am never alone. I am never forsaken. I am never friendless — because the Friend of sinners has made His home in me.
Thank You, Jesus, for the New Covenant in Your blood. Amen.
Receive the Cup
Drink now. As you do, receive the fullness of the New Covenant — a bond of friendship with God that nothing and no one can break.
Pause here. Take your time.
Closing Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this time at Your Table. Thank You for calling me friend — not because I earned it, but because Jesus paid for it. Thank You that I do not face life alone. I have a Friend who sticks closer than a brother, who laid down His life for me, and who will never leave nor forsake me.
I leave this Table differently than I came. The ache for human connection may still be there — but it no longer defines me. I am defined by the friendship of Jesus. I am known. I am chosen. I am loved with an everlasting love. And from that secure place, I can risk connection again. I can open my heart again. I can be a friend to others because I have received the ultimate friendship from You.
Walk with me now, Holy Spirit. When loneliness whispers, remind me that the Friend of sinners makes His home in me. When rejection stings, remind me that I have already been fully accepted by the only One whose opinion matters. Send the right friendships into my life — relationships that honor You, that sharpen me, that point me back to the One who is the source of all true friendship.
I seal this Communion in the precious blood of Jesus. No loneliness, no rejection, and no friendship wound can override what Christ accomplished on the cross. I am a friend of God. That is my identity. That is my security. That is my joy.
In the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
