Birthday After Loss
"You have recorded each one in Your book." — Psalm 139:16
Their birthday still comes every year — and so does the ache. The day they entered the world still matters. You want to honor them, but you're not sure how when they're no longer here to celebrate. This prayer is for the first birthday without them — and every one after.
For Their Birthday
Father God, today would have been their birthday. And I don't quite know what to do with that — the mixture of gratitude for their life and grief that it is over, at least on this side of heaven. The day they were born mattered. They mattered. And today I miss them in a way that words cannot capture.
Thank You for the years they were here. For the laughter. For the memories. For the mark they left on my life that can never be erased. Thank You that they lived — and that their life intersected with mine.
Help me to find a way to honor them today that feels right to me — whether that's lighting a candle, visiting a special place, sharing a memory, or simply sitting in the quiet and remembering. Give me freedom from any pressure to "celebrate" in a way that doesn't fit where I am.
Hold me in the grief that surfaces on days like this — when the calendar forces me to confront the absence in a way ordinary days don't. And if the grief is softer this year than last, let me receive that as a gift, not a betrayal.
I believe that my loved one is more alive now than they ever were on earth. I believe they are with You, celebrating in a way I cannot begin to imagine. And I believe I will see them again. Until then, I carry their memory — and today, especially, I carry it with love.
Happy birthday. You are not forgotten. You are not gone forever. And I love you still.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
