Prayer for Holiday Grief
"The Lord is close to the brokenhearted." — Psalm 34:18
The holidays can be the hardest time of year for the grieving heart. The empty chair. The missing voice. The traditions that now feel hollow. While the world celebrates, you may feel like you're collapsing inside. This prayer holds space for that tension — the grief and the grace, the tears and the hope — all in the same moment.
A Prayer for Holiday Seasons After Loss
Father God, the holidays are here and my heart is already heavy. Everyone around me is celebrating — but all I can see is the empty chair, the missing laugh, the person who should be here and is not. I don't know how to do this season without them.
Give me permission, Lord, to grieve even in the middle of celebration. Let me cry when I need to cry. Let me step away when it becomes too much. Help me not to pretend I'm fine when I'm not. And give me grace for the people who don't understand — who want me to "just enjoy the holiday."
At the same time, let there be moments of genuine joy — not as a betrayal of my grief, but as a gift from You. Help me to hold both: the tears and the laughter, the missing and the gratitude, the past and the present.
If there are traditions that hurt too much to continue this year, give me the freedom to let them go. And if there are new traditions I need to create — to honor the one I've lost while making room for the life I still have — give me the courage to start them.
Most of all, Lord, remind me that You are Immanuel — God with us. You came to be with us in our brokenness. The first Christmas was not picture-perfect — it was messy and unexpected, and You entered right into the middle of it. Enter into my holiday mess. Be present in my grief. Let me feel You near.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
