Christmas Without a Loved One

Father God, it's Christmas — and my heart is not in it. The carols feel hollow. The lights seem dimmer. The traditions that once brought me joy now just remind me of who is missing. I don't know how to do Christmas without them.

But I remember, Lord, that the first Christmas was not a picture-perfect scene. It was a teenage mother giving birth in a barn. It was a family fleeing violence. It was God entering a broken, messy, hurting world — because that's exactly where we needed Him most.

So enter my messy Christmas, Lord. Enter my grief. Meet me in the tears that come at unexpected moments — when I see their favorite ornament, when I cook their favorite dish, when I sit at a table with one less chair.

Help me to find moments of genuine peace — not the forced cheerfulness the world demands, but the deep, quiet hope that You came for. The hope that says death does not win. The hope that says one day every tear will be wiped away and every empty chair will be filled.

Give me the freedom to grieve and the courage to still celebrate — both in the same breath. Let there be laughter alongside the tears. Let there be joy that doesn't erase the pain but somehow coexists with it.

Thank You that the baby in the manger grew up to conquer death itself. Thank You that because He lives, my loved one lives — and I will see them again. That is the hope I'm holding onto this Christmas.
