Mother's Day After Loss

"As a mother comforts her child, so will I comfort you." — Isaiah 66:13

Mother's Day can be one of the most painful days on the calendar for so many — those who have lost their mother, those who have lost a child, those who long to be mothers, those with broken relationships with their mothers. If this day hurts for you, you are not alone. God sees you, and He meets you right where you are.

A Prayer for the Mother's Day Ache

Father God, I come to You on a day that is supposed to be about celebration — but my heart is heavy. Mother's Day doesn't feel like a celebration for me this year. It feels like a reminder of what I've lost, what I never had, or what is broken.

If I've lost my mother — hold me in the grief. The cards, the brunches, the commercials — they all point to what I no longer have. Help me to honor her memory without being consumed by the loss.

If I've lost a child — Lord, You know this pain. You watched Your own Son suffer. Hold me today. My arms ache for the child I cannot hold. Let me feel Your arms around me instead.

If I long to be a mother and the years keep passing — quiet the ache that feels unbearable today. Help me to trust Your timing and Your plan, even when it doesn't look like what I hoped.

If my relationship with my mother is strained or broken — give me grace. Heal what can be healed. Give me wisdom for what cannot be changed.

Whatever my story, Lord — be my comfort. Be the mothering presence that fills what is missing. You are the one who never leaves, never fails, and always loves.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
