End of Life Decisions

"Even though I walk through the darkest valley, I will fear no evil, for You are with me." — Psalm 23:4

Few decisions are as heavy as those made in a hospital room when a loved one cannot speak for themselves — or when you must make your own advanced-care choices. There are no easy answers, only impossible ones. This prayer is for everyone facing end-of-life decisions, asking God for wisdom when every option hurts.

For Impossible Decisions

Father God, I am facing decisions that feel impossible — choices where every option costs something, where there is no clear right answer, where I'm terrified of getting it wrong. I need Your wisdom in a way I have never needed it before.

If I'm deciding for someone I love — give me clarity about what they would want. Help me to set aside my own fear of losing them long enough to honor their wishes. Give me peace that making the decision they would have made, even when it breaks my heart, is an act of love.

If I'm deciding for myself — help me to face what I don't want to face. Give me courage to make my wishes known while I still can, so the people I love won't have to guess.

In the tension between holding on and letting go — give me discernment. In conversations with doctors and family members — give me calm words and listening ears. In moments when guilt and grief threaten to overwhelm — remind me that I am not God, and I am not expected to be.

Most of all, remind me that death is not failure. For those who belong to You, death is not the end — it is the beginning of real life. Whatever decisions I face, let them be made in love, not fear.

In Jesus' name, Amen.
