You Don't Know Who You Are
You're sitting in a situation that feels impossible. You're facing opposition that seems stronger than you. You're dealing with circumstances that won't change. You're praying, but you feel powerless. You're believing God, but you're also believing that you can't do anything about what's happening.
So you wait. You hope. You pray. But you don't act. Because you don't realize something critical: You have authority. Real authority. Spiritual authority. Authority that was given to you the moment you became a believer.
And most of you don't know you have it. Most of you are living as if you're powerless when you're actually walking around carrying the authority of heaven. It's time to wake up to who you really are.
What Authority Actually Is
Authority is not power. They're not the same thing. Power is the ability to do something. Authority is the right to do something.
A police officer might be smaller and weaker than the person he's arresting. But the officer has the authority to make the arrest. Why? Because he's been given the legal right. Authority is delegated power. It's the right given to you by someone higher than you to act on their behalf.
And that's exactly what God has given you. God has given you the authority to act on His behalf in the earth. Not your own authority. Not authority you earned. Authority that was delegated to you by the King of Kings.
Psalm 8:6 — The Foundation of Your Authority
"You put us in charge of all creation, gave us dominion over the sheep and cattle and all the wild animals, the birds in the sky, the fish in the sea, everything that swims the ocean currents."
— Psalm 8:6 (The Message)
Read that again. "You put us in charge." Not God staying in charge. God putting US in charge. "Gave us dominion." Dominion. Not permission. Not suggestion. Dominion. Complete control.
"God blessed them and said, 'Be fruitful, increase in number, fill the earth, and bring it under your control. Rule over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and every animal that crawls on the earth.'" — Genesis 1:28 (God's Word Translation)
From the beginning, God gave humanity dominion. And when you became a believer, you didn't lose that dominion. You gained clarity about it. You gained spiritual authority that goes beyond the physical.
The Specific Authority You've Been Given
Authority Over the Physical Realm
You have authority over your body. It's not your enemy. It's your temple. You can command it to obey. You have the authority to say no to sickness, no to addiction, no to anything that tries to take over your physical body.
You have authority over your circumstances. Not to deny them, but to refuse to be controlled by them. You can speak to situations. You can take action. You're not helpless.
You have authority over nature. Jesus rebuked the wind and it obeyed. You have that same authority because you're a believer. When storms come — literal or figurative — you can speak to them.
The problem is most of you have never tried. You've accepted powerlessness as your default when dominion is your birthright as a believer.
Authority Over the Spiritual Realm
"Look, I have given you the authority to overcome all the powers of the enemy. Nothing will harm you." — Luke 10:19 (The Passion Translation)
Jesus is saying to you: I have given you authority. Not "I will give you when you're more spiritual." Not "I will give you if you pray enough." I HAVE GIVEN YOU. Past tense. It's already done.
You have authority over demonic opposition. Evil spirits have to obey the authority of Jesus when you speak in His name. You're not asking nicely. You're commanding with authority.
You have authority over spiritual attacks. When thoughts come that aren't from God, you can reject them with authority. When fear rises, you can command it to leave.
You have authority over the plans of the enemy against your life. The enemy can plan all he wants, but you have the authority to stand against those plans and declare them null and void in your life.
But again, most of you don't know you have this. So you suffer under things you have the authority to overcome.
Authority in Prayer
"I can guarantee this truth: Whatever you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven, and whatever you permit on earth will be permitted in heaven. Again, I can guarantee that if two of you on earth agree about anything you ask for, my Father in heaven will do it for you." — Matthew 18:18-19 (God's Word Translation)
This is radical. Whatever you prohibit on earth will be prohibited in heaven. That's authority. You can prohibit things. You can permit things. You're not asking heaven to do something. You're speaking from a position of authority on earth and heaven aligns with it.
This is not New Age thinking. This is Scripture. You have authority in prayer. When you pray, you're not begging. You're declaring. You're using authority.
Why You Don't Know You Have This Authority
You've Been Taught Helplessness
Somewhere along the way, the church started teaching believers that they're powerless. Just pray and wait. Just trust God. Just be patient. While all those things have truth, they're incomplete without understanding your authority. God wants you to pray AND act. God wants you to trust AND engage your authority. Using the authority God gave you is actually the highest form of trust in His Word.
You've Been Trained by the Enemy
The enemy doesn't want you to know you have authority. Why? Because authority changes everything. If you knew you had authority over him, he couldn't touch you. If you knew you had authority over circumstances, he couldn't control you. So he keeps you ignorant. He whispers: "You're not powerful. You're not worthy. You don't have the right." And you believe him — because you've never been taught the truth. Well, you're being taught now.
You've Been Ashamed to Step Into It
Some of you know about authority. You've read the verses. But you're embarrassed to claim it. It feels prideful to say: "I have authority over this situation." But that's the enemy keeping you small. Pride is when you claim authority you don't have. Obedience is when you claim the authority God DID give you. It's not arrogant. It's obedient. God wants you to use what He gave you.
What Authority Looks Like in Real Life
Speaking to Circumstances
You wake up sick. Instead of accepting it as your reality, you speak to it. "In Jesus's name, I reject this sickness. My body is healed. I command this pain to leave." That's not denying reality. That's exercising authority. You're declaring a higher reality: that Jesus paid for your healing.
"If you say to this mountain, 'Go jump in the lake,' and don't doubt it in your heart but believe that what you say will happen, it will be done for you." — Mark 11:23 (The Message)
Rejecting Thoughts
A thought comes: "You're going to fail." Instead of receiving it, you reject it. "That's not mine. That's not from God. I reject you in Jesus's name." You don't just let thoughts float around. You take them captive. You evaluate them. If they don't agree with God's Word, you reject them with authority.
"We take every thought captive to make it obedient to Christ." — 2 Corinthians 10:5 (God's Word Translation)
Commanding the Enemy
You feel depression trying to grip you. Instead of accepting it, you command it. "In Jesus's name, spirit of depression, you have no place here. Leave now." The enemy will flee. Not if you're nice about it. Not if you ask gently. When you stand in your authority and command it to go, it goes.
"Resist the enemy in your authority, and he will flee from you." — James 4:7 (The Passion Translation)
Declaring Over Situations
Your financial situation looks impossible. Instead of accepting it, you declare. "This situation is turning around. Abundance is coming. I receive prosperity in Jesus's name." Your words carry power when they're aligned with God's authority. You're not manifesting things. You're declaring God's truth over your situation.
"Death and life are in the power of the tongue." — Proverbs 18:21 (God's Word Translation)
Authority vs. Presumption — Know the Difference
Authority Is:
- • Standing on what God said
- • Speaking what aligns with Scripture
- • "God said I'm healed, so I declare healing"
- • "God said the enemy is defeated, so I stand against him"
- • Grounded in Scripture
Presumption Is:
- • Making up your own way and calling it God's will
- • Speaking whatever you want and calling it faith
- • "I want a private jet, so I'm claiming it in faith"
- • "I can do whatever I want because I'm a believer"
- • Grounded in personal desire
How to Actually Exercise Your Authority
Believe You Have It
You can't use authority you don't believe you have. So first, settle it: God gave you authority. Scripture is clear on this. It's not in question. You have it. Belief shifts you from passivity to action.
Speak with Conviction
When you exercise authority, you don't ask. You declare. "God, please heal me" is a prayer. "I am healed in Jesus's name" is a declaration of authority. Both have their place. But authority requires conviction. You speak it like it's already true — because in the spiritual realm, it is.
Speak in Jesus's Name
Your authority doesn't come from you. It comes from Jesus. When you speak in His name, you're not acting alone. You're backed by all of heaven.
"Whatever you ask in my name, I will do it, so that the glory of the Father will be displayed through the Son." — John 14:13-14 (The Passion Translation)
Know Your Domain
You have authority over your own life, body, choices, spiritual opposition, circumstances, your words, and your atmosphere. You do NOT have authority over other people's free will, God's decisions, or circumstances outside your domain. Knowing the difference is crucial.
Back It Up with Action
Authority isn't just words. It's words backed by faith and action. If you're speaking health, you're also taking care of yourself. If you're speaking prosperity, you're also working and being wise with money. Authority without action is just noise. Authority plus action is power.
Scripture's Testimony About Your Authority
"I long for you to know the immeasurable greatness of his power that works on our behalf… This mighty power is displayed in us because we are now seated with him in the heavenly realm, far above all principalities and powers."
— Ephesians 1:19-21 (The Passion Translation)
"You are from God, children, and you have conquered them because the one who is in you is greater than the one who is in the world."
— 1 John 4:4 (God's Word Translation)
"Your old life is dead. Your new life, which is your real life — even though invisible to spectators — is with Christ in God's presence."

You're seated with Christ in the heavenly realm. Far above principalities and powers. That's your position. The one in you is greater. Not equal. Greater. And you carry that.
What It Looks Like to Live as an Authorized Believer
- • An authorized believer doesn't accept the enemy's lies.
- • An authorized believer speaks to situations instead of complaining about them.
- • An authorized believer knows their position in Christ and operates from it.
- • An authorized believer isn't aggressive or arrogant, but they're not timid either.
- • An authorized believer commands authority while remaining humble before God.
- • An authorized believer understands they're not the source of authority — they're just the vessel through which it flows.
- • An authorized believer changes atmospheres by speaking.
- • An authorized believer shifts circumstances by declaring.
- • An authorized believer operates in power because they know who they are.
An Invitation to Step Into Authority
This is my invitation to you. Stop living as if you're powerless. You're not. Stop accepting what the enemy tries to do. You have the authority to reject it. Stop waiting passively for God to fix everything. Partner with Him by using the authority He gave you.
Start speaking to your circumstances. Start rejecting the enemy's attacks. Start declaring God's truth over your life. Start operating in the authority that's been yours since the moment you became a believer.
You have been given dominion. You have been given authority. You have been empowered by heaven.
Now act like it. Walk in it. Use it. Your authority changes everything.
A Prayer to Step Into Your Authority
Father, open my eyes to the authority I've been given.
Help me understand that I'm not powerless. Help me see that Jesus gave me His authority. Help me step out of passivity and into power.
Help me speak with conviction about what I believe. Help me command my circumstances in Jesus's name. Help me reject the enemy's attacks. Help me declare Your truth over my life.
Help me live as an authorized believer. Help me use the power and authority You've given me.
Help me step into who I really am in Christ.
