Opening Question
Let me be completely honest with you about something:
You can't do this without Jesus.
Not in a motivational way. In a literal way.
Without His blood. Without His sacrifice. Without His righteousness.
You have nothing. You can do nothing.
And that's not weakness. That's reality.
The Truth About You and Me
Here's what we need to understand first:
Without Jesus, you and I have nothing to stand on before a holy God.
Not spiritually superior. Not morally decent. Not basically good enough to earn our way.
On our own merit? We're bankrupt.
Listen to what Isaiah said:
Isaiah 64:6
"But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags: and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away."
Even our righteousness—the things we think make us good—are filthy rags.
That's the starting point. Not "we're flawed." Not "we're imperfect."
On our own, we have nothing to offer a holy God. We're spiritually bankrupt.
We can't earn God's approval. We can't work our way to righteousness. We can't bootstrap ourselves into acceptability.
We have nothing to offer God.
You Can't Do Anything On Your Own
This is the hardest thing for people to accept:
You cannot do anything on your own.
Not spiritually. Not morally. Not in any way that matters.
You cannot save yourself. You cannot fix yourself. You cannot make yourself righteous.
Listen to what Jesus said:
John 15:5
"I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing."
Without Jesus, you can do nothing.
Not "nothing important." Not "nothing lasting."
Nothing.
You're powerless. You're helpless. You're unable.
And until you accept that, you won't understand why Jesus matters.
Why He Shed His Blood
Here's what changed everything:
Jesus looked at humanity—filthy, unable, powerless—and Jesus did something.
Jesus shed His blood.
Not as a symbolic gesture. As an actual sacrifice. An actual payment for actual sin.
Listen:
Hebrews 9:22
"And almost all things are by the law purged with blood; and without shedding of blood is no remission."
Without shedding of blood, there's no forgiveness. There's no cleansing. There's no way forward.
So Jesus shed His blood.
Why? To make a way for you. For me. For filthy, powerless, unable people to have access to God.
That's the only reason. Not because we deserved it. Not because we earned it. Because Jesus loved us enough to do what we couldn't do for ourselves.
His Blood Gives You Access
Here's what His blood does:
It gives you access to the Father.
Without His blood, you're locked out. You can't approach God on your own. You have nothing in yourself that qualifies you to stand before Him.
But with His blood covering you? You have access.
Listen:
Hebrews 10:19-20
"Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus, By a new and living way, which he hath consecrated for us, through the veil, that is to say, his flesh."
Through Jesus' blood, you have boldness to enter into God's presence.
You can come to God. You can pray. You can ask. You can know God.
Not because you're good enough. Because Jesus' blood made a way.
His Righteousness Becomes Your Righteousness
Now here's the thing that should blow your mind:
When you accept Jesus, His righteousness becomes your righteousness.
Not figuratively. Actually.
Listen:
2 Corinthians 5:21
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
Jesus, who knew no sin, became sin. Took your sin. Bore your sin.
And you become the righteousness of God in Him.
You wear His righteousness. Not your own (which is filthy rags). His.
Once you accept Jesus, you are the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.
That's not you trying to be good. That's you being clothed in His goodness. That's not you earning approval. That's you receiving His approval.
Complete Dependence
So here's what this means practically:
You depend on Jesus completely.
Not partially. Not "Jesus plus your effort." Completely.
You depend on:
Every single moment, you're dependent on Him.
You're not trying to be good on your own. You're leaning on His goodness.
You're not trying to be righteous on your own. You're wrapped in His righteousness.
You're not trying to earn God's favor. You're living in the favor He bought with His blood.
Listen:
Philippians 4:13
"I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me."
Through Christ. That's the key. Not through yourself. Through Christ. You depend on Him for everything.
That's Why You Follow Him
You don't follow Jesus because He's a good example to imitate.
You follow Jesus because He's your only way to survive.
He's your only access to the Father.
He's your only source of righteousness.
He's your only hope.
Listen:
John 14:6
"Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me."
There's no other way. No other door. No other option.
It's Jesus or nothing.
And because you can't do anything without Him, and because He's the only way to the Father, you depend on Him. Not out of obligation. Out of survival.
You're Not Trying to Ascend
Here's what this removes:
You're not trying to ascend to some unattainable spiritual place.
You're not trying to be perfect.
You're not trying to earn God's approval through your behavior.
You're not trying to become good enough.
You're simply accepting what Jesus already did and living in dependence on it.
That's it.
You accept His blood. You accept His righteousness. You lean on His power.
And you live.
One Condition
Here's what God invites you to do:
Receive Him. And turn.
Accept that on your own, you have nothing to offer a holy God.
Accept that you can't do anything to save yourself.
Accept that Jesus shed His blood for you.
Accept that His righteousness becomes yours.
Accept that you're completely dependent on Him.
And then turn. Repentance isn't earning anything — it's changing direction. It's the decision to stop running your own life and start following the One who gave His for you.
Listen:
John 1:12
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
Receive Him. Believe on His name. Turn from what you were chasing before.
That's it. That's the invitation.
Not "be good enough." Receive Him. Not "earn it." Believe on Him. And let that belief change the direction of your life.
Live in That Dependence
So from this day forward:
Live knowing you depend on Jesus completely.
When you face temptation, lean on His strength, not your own.
When you face sin, remember His blood covers you. Repent. Move on.
When you feel inadequate, remember His righteousness is yours.
When you want to give up, remember He already paid the price. You're secure in Him.
Every moment, every choice, every breath—you're dependent on what He did.
And that's not weakness. That's the only way to actually survive spiritually.
Listen:
Colossians 3:3
"For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God."
Your life is hidden with Christ. You're secure in Him. Dependent on Him. Alive because of Him.
This Is Why We Make It
You can't do this on your own. But here's the beautiful part:
You don't have to.
Jesus already did it. He already paid. He already made the way.
You just have to accept it and depend on Him.
That's how the bankrupt become righteous. That's how the powerless become powerful. That's how the unable become able.
Not through their own effort. Through complete dependence on what Jesus did.
Reflection Questions
- Do you believe you are completely helpless without Jesus? Or do you still think you can do some of it on your own?
- Have you accepted His blood and His righteousness? Or are you still trying to earn it?
- What area of your life are you not fully depending on Jesus? Where are you still trying to do it yourself?
- What would change if you truly lived in complete dependence on Jesus?
Prayer
Father, help me understand the depth of my need for You.
Without Jesus, I have nothing to stand on. I am helpless. I can do nothing on my own.
Thank You for Jesus. Thank You that He shed His blood for me. Thank You that His blood gives me access to You.
Thank You that His righteousness is my righteousness. That I am covered. That I am acceptable.
Help me live in complete dependence on Him. Not trying to earn anything. Not trying to be good enough. Just leaning on what He did.
Every moment, help me remember: I depend on Jesus completely. For everything. For my salvation. For my righteousness. For my strength. For my life.
I receive His blood. I receive His righteousness. I receive His power.
And I depend on Him for everything.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Without Him you can do nothing — but with Him, you have everything. Live in complete dependence on Jesus.
