Opening Question

You hear people talk about faith all the time.

"Just have faith." "Walk by faith." "That's a faith thing."

But what does it actually mean?

Faith isn't just believing something is true. Faith is trusting God so much that you actually act on it.

Faith Is a Gift

First, let's be clear: Faith is not something you work up. Faith is a gift from God.

EPHESIANS 2:8-9

"For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast."

Faith is a gift. God gives it to you.

You don't earn faith. You don't achieve faith through effort. God gives it.

So if you're struggling to have faith, you can ask God: "Help me believe. Give me faith." And God will.

Now, here's where it gets practical: faith is a gift, but it's also something you exercise. Think of it like a muscle — God gives you the muscle, but you have to use it for it to grow. The Holy Spirit deposits faith in your spirit, and then you choose to act on it. When you take a step, God meets you with more grace. When you stay still and wait to "feel" ready, the gift sits unused. God gives; you respond. That's the rhythm of faith.

What Faith Actually Is

So what is faith?

The Greek word is pistis — it means trust, confidence, belief.

But it's not just intellectual belief. It's not just knowing something in your head.

It's knowing something so deeply that you stake your life on it.

HEBREWS 11:1

"Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen."

"The substance of things hoped for."

That means faith is making something real that you haven't seen yet. Faith is treating the promise like it's already happening.

"The evidence of things not seen."

That means faith is the evidence. Faith is what proves something is real, even though you can't see it.

Faith Has Action

Here's what separates faith from just believing:

Faith acts.

You can believe something is true without doing anything about it.

But faith? Faith does something.

JAMES 2:26

"For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also."

"Faith without works is dead."

If you say you have faith but you're not living like it, then your faith is dead. It's not real.

Real faith shows up in how you live.

If you have faith that God will provide, you still go to work. You still save. You still take care of yourself and your family.

If you have faith that God heals, you still take your medicine. You still see a doctor. But you also pray and trust God.

If you have faith that God protects, you still look both ways before crossing the street. But you also trust God with your safety.

Faith isn't passivity. Faith is active trust.

Examples of Faith

Let me show you what faith looks like:

Abraham had faith.

God told Abraham to leave his home and go to a place he'd never been. Abraham didn't know where he was going. But Abraham packed his stuff and left. That's faith.

The woman with the issue of blood had faith.

She had been bleeding for twelve years. The doctors couldn't help her. But she believed that if she could just touch Jesus' garment, she'd be healed. She pushed through a crowd to touch Jesus. That's faith.

The Centurion had faith.

His servant was dying. He asked Jesus to heal his servant. Jesus said He would come to his house. The Centurion said, "No, just say the word. I believe it will happen." Jesus healed the servant from a distance. That's faith.

In every case, faith wasn't just believing. Faith was acting on the belief.

What Faith Looks Like Today

So what does faith look like for you?

Faith looks like praying for something and then living like it's already answered.

You pray for your finances to improve. Then you get a second job. You cut unnecessary spending. You act like God is about to bless you. That's faith.

Faith looks like believing God can heal you, so you start doing things you couldn't do before.

You were told you'd never walk again. You believe God can heal you. So you start physical therapy. You start stretching. You start believing your body can move. That's faith.

Faith looks like giving when you're not sure how you'll pay your bills.

You see someone in need. You know they need help. But you're barely getting by yourself. You give anyway, trusting that God will provide for you. That's faith.

Faith looks like forgiving someone even though they hurt you.

You believe in Jesus' command to forgive. So even though it's hard, you forgive. You trust that God's way is better than your way. That's faith.

The Cost of No Faith

And here's what's important: Living without faith is exhausting.

If you don't have faith, you have to control everything. You have to manipulate situations. You have to worry about everything that could go wrong.

You're carrying all that weight yourself.

But faith? Faith releases that weight.

MATTHEW 11:28

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Jesus invites you to come to Him and find rest. Rest comes when you have faith. When you trust Jesus with your burdens.

How to Grow Your Faith

So how do you develop faith?

Read God's Word.

Faith comes by hearing God's Word. The more you read Scripture, the more your faith grows.

Spend time with God.

Prayer is how you develop a relationship with God. And faith grows through relationship.

See God working.

Pay attention to how God shows up in your life. Every time God comes through, your faith gets stronger.

Act on what you believe.

Take steps. Trust God. Watch Him come through. Your faith grows.

Surround yourself with people of faith.

Be around people who believe God. Their faith will inspire yours.

Reflection Questions

  1. What is God asking you to trust Him with right now? What would faith look like in that situation?
  2. Where are you trying to control things instead of trusting God? What would change if you let go?
  3. What step of faith is God asking you to take? Are you willing to take it?

A Prayer

Father, I want to have faith. Real faith. The kind that trusts You and acts on that trust.

Give me faith to believe that You're real, that You love me, that You have a plan for my life.

Show me where I'm trying to control things. Help me release that control and trust You instead.

Give me courage to take steps of faith even when I'm afraid.

Grow my faith as I spend time with You, read Your Word, and watch You work in my life.

I'm ready to walk by faith, not by sight.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

Declarations to Hold Onto

Say these out loud. Let faith rise in your spirit.

  • Faith is a gift from God. I don't have to manufacture it — I can ask for it.
  • Faith is the substance of things hoped for. I treat God's promises as already happening.
  • Faith acts. My faith is not dead — it shows up in how I live.
  • I release control to God. I don't have to carry everything. Jesus gives me rest.
  • Faith grows as I spend time with God. Every time I see Him come through, my faith gets stronger.
  • I surround myself with people of faith. Their belief fuels my belief.
  • I walk by faith, not by sight. I trust God even when I can't see the outcome.

If this teaching helped you understand what faith really is, share it with someone who's trying to control everything on their own. They need to know there's a better way.
