Opening Question
Death is the thing nobody wants to talk about.
But it's the thing everybody has to face.
So let's talk about it.
What happens when you die?
Not in a scary way. In a real way.
Your Spirit and Your Body Are Separate
First, understand this: You're not just your body.
You're a spirit living in a body.
Your body is temporary. Your spirit is eternal.
2 Corinthians 5:8
"We are confident, I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord."
Paul talks about being "absent from the body" and "present with the Lord."
That implies separation. Your spirit can be separate from your body.
When you die, that separation happens permanently.
What Happens to Your Body
Your body returns to dust.
Genesis 3:19
"In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground; for out of it wast thou taken: for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return."
You were made from dust. And unto dust you shall return.
That's not depressing. That's just reality.
Your body is temporary. It was never meant to last forever. It was always designed to return to the earth.
Psalm 103:14
"For he knoweth our frame; he remembereth that we are dust."
God remembers that we're dust. God knows our bodies are limited. Temporary. Fragile.
But that's okay. Because you're more than your body.
What Happens to Your Spirit
When your body dies, your spirit continues.
Your spirit—the real you, your soul, your essence—doesn't die.
It separates from your body and continues on.
2 Corinthians 12:2-4
"I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter."
Paul was caught up to the third heaven. He didn't know if he was in his body or out of his body. But his spirit was in heaven, experiencing God.
That's what happens when you die. Your spirit continues. It goes to be with God.
Or, if you've rejected God, it goes to be separated from God.
Two Destinations
Where you spend eternity depends on your relationship with Jesus.
If you believe in Jesus, when you die, your spirit goes to be with the Lord.
Philippians 1:23
"For I am in a strait betwixt two, having a desire to depart, and to be with Christ; which is far better."
Paul wanted to depart from his body and be with Christ. He knew that was better.
That's what happens for believers. When you die, you go to be with Christ.
But if you reject Jesus, if you don't believe, then when you die, you go to be separated from God.
Matthew 25:41
"Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand, Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels."
Those who reject Jesus are separated from God. Eternally. Permanently. That's called hell.
But There's a Resurrection Coming
Death isn't the end for believers.
There's a resurrection coming.
1 Thessalonians 4:16-17
"For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord."
When Jesus returns, the dead in Christ will rise. You'll be resurrected. Given a new body. An eternal body.
And you'll live with Jesus forever.
Not as a spirit floating around. As a whole person—body, soul, and spirit—living in God's presence. That's the promise.
Don't Fear Death
So if you believe in Jesus, you don't have to fear death.
Death isn't an ending. It's a transition.
Your body returns to dust. But your spirit goes to be with Jesus. And one day, you'll be resurrected with a new, eternal body.
1 Corinthians 15:57
"But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ."
Jesus has given you victory over death. You don't have to be afraid.
Living With Eternity in Mind
Understanding death changes how you live.
When you know this life isn't all there is, you live differently.
You make different choices. You prioritize differently. You value what actually matters.
2 Corinthians 4:18
"While we look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen: for the things which are seen are temporal; but the things which are not seen are eternal."
Don't focus only on what you can see. Focus on what's eternal.
Because what you can see will pass away. But what's eternal will last forever.
The Bottom Line
So what happens when you die?
If you believe in Jesus: Your body returns to dust. Your spirit goes to be with the Lord. And one day, you're resurrected to live with Jesus forever.
If you don't believe in Jesus: Your body returns to dust. Your spirit is separated from God. Forever.
That's why it matters whether you believe in Jesus right now.
This isn't a decision you need to make later. Make it today. Believe in Jesus today. Because you never know when your body's time on earth will be over.

- Does the thought of death scare you? Why or why not?
- Have you made peace with the fact that your body is temporary?
- Are you confident that if you died today, your spirit would go to be with Jesus? Why or why not?
- How would living with eternity in mind change the choices you make today?
Prayer
Father, help me understand death without fear. Help me accept that my body is temporary but my spirit is eternal.
Give me confidence that because I believe in Jesus, when my body dies, my spirit will go to be with You.
Help me live with eternity in mind. Help me make choices that matter eternally. Help me invest in what lasts.
Thank You for Jesus' victory over death. Thank You that I don't have to be afraid of dying.
Help me live fully today, knowing that death isn't an ending but a transition.

Death isn't the end for those who believe — it's a transition into the presence of Jesus. And one day, resurrection.
