Opening Question
You've heard the term before, right?
"Born again Christian."
And maybe you thought it meant something weird. Something extreme. Something religious.
But actually, it means something beautiful: You get a completely new life.
Jesus' Declaration
Jesus was very clear about this. He didn't suggest it. He didn't recommend it.
He commanded it.
JOHN 3:3
"Jesus answered and said unto him, Verily, verily, I say unto thee, Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
"Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God."
In other words: If you want to go to heaven, if you want to know God, if you want eternal life — you have to be born again.
Not baptized. Not just believe. Not just go to church.
Born again.
The Greek word is gennao — it means to be begotten, to be born, to come into existence.
Jesus is talking about a rebirth. A new beginning. A complete transformation.
What Born Again Means
So what does it actually mean to be born again?
It means your old life is over. Your old identity is finished.
You're starting fresh.
When you're born physically, you come out of your mother's womb completely new. You don't bring anything from before. You're clean. You're innocent. You're a new creation.
The same thing happens spiritually when you're born again.
Your past? Covered by Jesus' blood. Forgiven. Gone.
Your shame? Released. Forgiven. Gone.
Your guilt? Paid for. Forgiven. Gone.
You're starting over. Not as the person you were. But as a new person.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:17
"Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new."
You are a new creature. Old things have passed away. All things become new.
That's what born again means.
How It Happens
So how do you get born again?
You accept Jesus.
You believe that Jesus is God's Son. You believe that Jesus died for your sins. You believe that Jesus rose from the dead.
And you ask Jesus to save you.
That's it. That's the requirement.
JOHN 1:12
"But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name."
As many as received Him — as many as believed in Him — Jesus gave them the power to become the children of God.
The moment you receive Jesus, you're born again.
The moment you believe, you're transformed.
It's not gradual. It's not something that takes years to figure out.
The moment you accept Jesus, you're a new person.
What Changes
Now, being born again doesn't mean everything instantly becomes perfect.
You still live on earth. You still face struggles. You still have to work through things.
But what changes is:
Your identity.
You're no longer defined by your past. You're defined by Jesus. You're a child of God.
Your power.
You now have access to God's Holy Spirit. You have power you didn't have before.
Your future.
You're no longer headed toward judgment. You're headed toward eternal life.
Your freedom.
You're free from sin's control. Sin no longer has dominion over you.
Your purpose.
You now have a reason to live that's bigger than yourself.
ROMANS 6:9-10
"Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more. Death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God."
Death has no dominion over Jesus. And because you're in Jesus, death has no dominion over you either.
You're free.
You're Not Alone
And here's what's beautiful: When you're born again, you're not alone in this new life.
Jesus sends His Holy Spirit to live inside you.
The Holy Spirit is your teacher. Your guide. Your comforter. Your strength.
JOHN 14:26
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
The Holy Spirit will teach you. Guide you. Help you remember God's promises.
You're not trying to figure this out alone.
You have God's Spirit with you, helping you, strengthening you, leading you.
A New Beginning
So what does it mean to be born again?
It means your old life is over. Your new life is beginning.
It means you're no longer defined by your past. You're defined by Jesus.
It means you have a fresh start. A clean slate. A new identity.
It means you're not alone. God's Spirit is with you.
It means you have a future. A real future. An eternal future.
That's what born again means.
And it all starts the moment you say yes to Jesus.
Reflection Questions
- Are you ready to be born again? What does a new start feel like to you?
- What would it mean to be free from your past and start fresh?
- If you were truly a new person starting today, who would you want to become?
A Prayer
Father, I'm ready to be born again. I'm ready to start fresh. I'm ready to be a new person in Jesus.
I accept Jesus as my Savior. I believe in Jesus. I ask Jesus to transform me.
Make me new. Free me from my past. Give me a new identity. Give me a new purpose.
Send Your Holy Spirit to live in me. Guide me. Teach me. Strengthen me.
I'm ready for this new beginning.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
Declarations to Hold Onto
Say these out loud. Declare your new identity in Christ.
- I am born again. My old life is over. My new life has begun.
- I am a new creature in Christ. Old things have passed away. All things are new.
- I am a child of God. I have received Jesus, and He has given me that right.
- The Holy Spirit lives in me. I am not alone. I have a Teacher, Guide, and Comforter.
- Death has no dominion over me. I am free — now and forever.
- My past is forgiven. It does not define me. Jesus defines me.
- I have a future. A real, eternal future with God.
