What You're Stressed About Right Now
Take a moment and think about what's weighing on you right now. The financial pressure. The relationship tension. The health concern. The disappointment. The thing you can't stop replaying in your mind at 2 a.m.
Now let me tell you something that might feel uncomfortable at first but will set you free if you let it sink in: It's temporary. All of it. Every single thing you're worried about is temporary.
That's not me minimizing your pain. That's me giving you the perspective that will get you through it.
The Verse That Changes Everything
The apostle Paul wrote something that has anchored me through every hard season of my life. He wrote it from prison, by the way — not from a beach resort. He wrote it while suffering. And yet he said:
"For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen, since what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal."
— 2 Corinthians 4:17-18
Did you catch that? Paul called his troubles — imprisonment, beatings, shipwrecks, betrayal — "light and momentary." Not because they didn't hurt. Not because they didn't matter. But because compared to the eternal weight of glory waiting for him, they were a blink. A breath. A passing shadow.
Everything You Can See Is Temporary
Let that sink in. Everything you can see with your physical eyes is temporary. Your house. Your car. Your job title. Your bank account balance. Your body — yes, even your body is temporary. The people around you. The city you live in. The problems that feel so big right now.
All of it is passing away. Every single bit of it. And that's not bad news — it's the truth that frees you from the tyranny of temporary things.
The problem isn't that things are temporary. The problem is that we live as if they're permanent. We stress over temporary problems like they're eternal. We obsess over temporary pleasures like they'll last forever. We grieve temporary losses as if nothing good could ever come again. And in doing so, we miss the eternal things entirely.
This Includes Your Suffering
I need you to hear this part carefully, because it's the part that's hardest to believe when you're in the middle of it: Your suffering is temporary too.
Not "temporary" like it'll be over by lunchtime. I know some of you have been suffering for years. I know some of you are in a season that feels like it will never end. I know that "temporary" can feel like a hollow word when you've been in pain for a long time.
But here's what Paul is saying — and what I have learned through my own decades of walking through hard things: When you compare your suffering to eternity, even the longest pain is a moment. Even the deepest grief is a passing shadow. Even the hardest season has an expiration date. Maybe not today. Maybe not this year. But compared to forever? It's a comma, not a period.
"I consider that our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us." — Romans 8:18
The Good Things Are Temporary Too
Here's the part we don't like to think about: it's not just the bad things that are temporary. The good things are temporary too. The people you love — temporary. The season of life you're in right now — temporary. The health you have today — temporary. The opportunities in front of you — temporary.
This is not to make you sad or anxious. It's to make you present. It's to make you grateful. It's to make you stop taking today for granted. Every good thing in your life right now is a gift with an expiration date. That doesn't make it less valuable. It makes it more precious. Handle it with care. Savor it. Thank God for it. Don't assume it will always be there.
What Is Actually Eternal?
If everything you can see is temporary, then what is eternal? Paul tells us: "What is unseen is eternal." So what are the unseen, eternal things?
- •God Himself. The I AM. The One who was, and is, and is to come. Everything else will pass away, but God remains.
- •God's Word. "Heaven and earth will pass away, but My words will never pass away" (Matthew 24:35). Every promise. Every declaration. Every word God has spoken over your life — eternal.
- •Your soul. Your body is temporary. Your soul is eternal. The real you — the part of you that thinks, loves, chooses, and relates to God — will never cease to exist.
- •Your relationship with God. This is the one relationship that death cannot end. It is the anchor that holds when everything else is swept away.
- •The fruit of your life. Love, faith, hope, the souls you've touched, the legacy of obedience — these things echo into eternity.
How to Live When Everything Is Temporary
So how do you live in light of this truth? How do you navigate a life where everything you see is passing away? Paul gives us the answer: "So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen."
Fix your eyes. That's an intentional choice. It's not something that happens automatically — because the visible world is loud, and it demands your attention. You have to choose, every day, every hour, to look past the temporary and see the eternal.
When the bill comes and the bank account is low, fix your eyes on the God who provides — not on the temporary number in your account. When the diagnosis is scary, fix your eyes on the God who heals — not on the temporary condition of your body. When the relationship is strained, fix your eyes on the God who reconciles — not on the temporary tension. When grief is heavy, fix your eyes on the God who promises resurrection — not on the temporary separation of death.
This Is Freedom
When you finally grasp that everything in this life is temporary, something shifts. The things that used to terrify you lose their power. The things you used to cling to loosen their grip. The opinions that used to define you stop mattering so much. The failures that used to haunt you start to fade. The successes you used to chase start to look smaller.
Because you see them for what they are: temporary. Passing through. Not the final word. Not the ultimate reality. Just the set — not the story.
And you start to invest your life in the things that last. You start to care more about your character than your reputation, because your character is eternal and your reputation is temporary. You start to invest in relationships over achievements, because love is eternal and accomplishments are temporary. You start to store up treasure in heaven instead of on earth, because heaven is eternal and earth is temporary.
This is not escapism. This is wisdom. This is the perspective that will carry you through anything.
For the One Who's Tired
I know you're tired. I know the weight is real. I know "it's temporary" can feel like a platitude when you're in the middle of it. But I'm not saying it to dismiss your pain. I'm saying it to give you hope.
This season will not last forever. This pain has an expiration date. This burden is being lifted — maybe not as quickly as you want, maybe not in the way you expect, but it's being lifted. Because nothing in this life — no suffering, no struggle, no loss, no grief — is permanent. Only God is permanent. Only His love is permanent. Only His promises are permanent.
So take a breath. Lift your eyes. The temporary things are passing away. The eternal things are drawing near. And you — the real you, the eternal you — are safe in the hands of the God who never ends.
A Prayer for Eternal Perspective
Father, help me to see what is eternal.
When the temporary things scream for my attention, quiet my heart and fix my eyes on You. When the pain feels permanent, remind me that it's passing. When the good things distract me, remind me that they're passing too — and help me to savor them with gratitude while I have them.
Teach me to invest my life in what lasts: Your Word, Your people, Your purposes. Let me not waste my years chasing what will turn to dust. Give me an eternal perspective that shapes every decision, every relationship, every priority.
And when I'm tired, hold me. When I can't see past today, carry me. When the temporary feels overwhelming, let Your eternal Spirit be my peace.
