Holding What Doesn't Have Your Name On It
For the one who carries it while somebody else gets the credit.
I Know Where the Keys Are
I want to talk to whoever is holding something together that does not have their name on it. You know who you are. You are the one who knows where the keys are. You are the one who knows what the bills are, and when they are due. You are the one who got the children ready while somebody else was getting ready. And when the picture gets taken, you are the one holding the camera. You are in almost none of the photographs, because you took all of them.
The Work Was Still Real
When you carry something and somebody else gets the name on it, you start to wonder whether it counted. Whether you are exaggerating your own part. You are not exaggerating. It happened. You did it. The building stood up because you held it.
And the Bible is emphatic that God's record and the public record are two different documents. Hebrews 6:10 says, "God is not unrighteous to forget your work and labour of love." That sentence assumes somebody else did forget, and it puts God in a different category from them. Jesus said it three times in Matthew 6 — thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly. There is no such thing as unwitnessed faithfulness.
And Colossians 3:23 says, "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men." Paul wrote that to bondservants — people doing work legally credited to somebody else. He told them who was actually keeping the account. When the work is unto the Lord, you have already been paid by Somebody who never misses a debt.
The People Who Held Things Nobody Named
Scripture is full of people in your exact position. Joseph ran Potiphar's whole house — the Bible notes Potiphar knew nothing of what he had, save the bread he did eat. Then Joseph ran the prison the same way. Years of being the one who knew where the keys were, and the names on everything were not his.
The servant in Genesis 24 travels hundreds of miles, prays one of the most beautiful prayers in the Old Testament, secures a wife for Isaac — and the chapter never gives us his name. The little maid in 2 Kings 5 tells her mistress about a prophet, and that one sentence from a nameless servant is the reason Naaman gets healed. God kept their work in the record even when the world did not keep their names.
And the woman in Mark 14 with the alabaster box — Jesus said wherever this gospel is preached, what she did will be told as a memorial. Two thousand years later we are still telling it. And Mark does not give us her name. Being remembered by God and being credited by people are two entirely different things, and only one of them lasts.
How to Carry It Without It Poisoning You
Guard against the root. Hebrews 12:15: "Lest any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled." A root grows underground and quiet. By the time you can see it, it has already got hold of everything. Watch for the signs — the mental list, the tone, the satisfaction when things fail without you.
Know the difference between serving and being erased. Choosing to serve is holy. Being systematically erased, where someone actively takes credit and rewrites the record, is a different matter. You are allowed to name that plainly, seek counsel, and make changes.
Let God be the One who lifts you. 1 Peter 5:6 — humble yourself, that He may exalt you in due time. Psalm 75:6 — promotion cometh neither from the east, nor from the west. God putteth down one and setteth up another. You do not have to campaign. I spent years holding up things that carried other people's names. Today the ministry I am building has my name on it. The years of holding what was not mine were not wasted — they were the training.
A Prayer for the One Holding What Isn't Theirs
Father, You know exactly what I carry, and You know whose name is on it. Thank You that You are not unrighteous to forget my work and labour of love, even the parts nobody ever saw.
Teach me to work as unto You and not unto people, so that their recognition stops being my paycheck. Guard my heart from the root of bitterness. Show me if it has already started, in my tone, in my list, in the satisfaction I feel when things fail without me. Pull it up.
Give me wisdom to know the difference between serving and being erased. I will not campaign for myself. You are the One who exalts, in due time. I trust Your calendar. In Jesus' name. Amen.
