Most people don't realize something crucial:
The Holy Spirit doesn't just hang around. He's actively working in your life every single moment.
He's not passive. He's not waiting for you to get your act together. He's not some distant observer hoping you'll figure things out.
He's actively engaged in your life right now.
The problem is, most of us don't know what to look for. We don't know what the Holy Spirit actually does. So we miss Him working. We miss His direction. We miss His protection.
That's why Part 2 exists: To show you the fifteen specific things the Holy Spirit does every single day—so you can recognize when He's working and cooperate with Him.
He Speaks
Acts 8:29
"Then the Spirit said unto Philip, Go near, and join thyself to this chariot."
The Holy Spirit speaks. He communicates with you. Not in some weird, spooky way. But real communication.
The Spirit spoke to Philip. Told him to go talk to someone. And Philip obeyed. And that encounter changed someone's life.
The Holy Spirit speaks to you the same way. Through a thought that pops into your head. A word from someone else that hits you. A Scripture that suddenly becomes alive. A feeling or impression. A dream. An audible voice (rare, but it happens).
I wake up in the morning and the Holy Spirit speaks to me. Sometimes it's a warning: "Don't go that way." Sometimes it's direction: "Reach out to that person." Sometimes it's comfort: "I'm with you."
Learn to recognize His voice. Spend enough time with Him and you'll know it like you know your own voice.
He Teaches
John 14:26
"But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said unto you."
The Holy Spirit is your teacher. Your personal tutor in the things of God.
The Holy Spirit teaches you and brings Scripture to your remembrance. He illuminates God's Word for you specifically.
You might read the same verse ten times and get nothing. Then the eleventh time, the Holy Spirit opens your eyes and suddenly you see something that changes your life. That's Him teaching you.
He doesn't just teach you information. He teaches you understanding. He teaches you how to apply God's Word to your actual life.
I rely on the Holy Spirit to teach me constantly. When I'm writing, when I'm preparing to speak, when I'm facing a situation—I ask Him to teach me. Show me. Help me understand. And He always does.
He Guides
John 16:13
"Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth."
The Holy Spirit guides you. He shows you the way.
He guides you into all truth. Not just some truth. All truth.
When you're facing a confusing situation, the Holy Spirit can guide you to the truth of it. When you're trying to make a decision, He can guide you in the right direction. When you're confused about who to trust, He can guide you away from deception.
The Holy Spirit is your GPS. Your navigation system. Your internal compass.
I don't make decisions based on pros and cons anymore. I ask the Holy Spirit: "Which way?" And He guides me. Every single time, He's right.
He Forbids
Acts 16:6-7
"Now when they had gone throughout Phrygia and the region of Galatia, and were forbidden of the Holy Ghost to preach the word in Asia, after they were come to Mysia, they assayed to go into Bithynia: but the Spirit suffered them not."
The Holy Spirit doesn't just tell you what to do. He also tells you what not to do. He forbids. He stops you. He blocks paths that would hurt you.
The Holy Spirit forbade them from preaching in Asia. The Spirit wouldn't allow them to go into Bithynia. He blocked those paths. Why? Because God had a different plan. A better plan.
The Holy Spirit forbids because He knows what's ahead. He knows which roads lead to destruction and which lead to blessing.
I can't count how many times the Holy Spirit has forbidden me from something. A business opportunity that looked good but He said no. A relationship that seemed promising but He forbid it. A word I was about to speak but He stopped me. Every time, I'm grateful I obeyed.
When the Holy Spirit forbids, you can trust it. He's protecting you.
He Reproves
John 16:8
"And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment."
The Holy Spirit reproves. That means He convicts you. He shows you where you're wrong. He doesn't do it in shame. He does it in love, to redirect you.
The Holy Spirit reproves the world of sin. He reveals sin. He shows where you've missed the mark.
His reproof is always redemptive. It's meant to restore you, not destroy you. When the Holy Spirit reproves me, it's because He loves me and wants me to get back on track.
I might realize mid-conversation that the Holy Spirit is reprooving me for how I spoke to someone. Convicting me. Not condemning me, but calling me back to a higher standard. And I repent. I apologize. I change. That's what reproof does. It leads you to repentance.
He Testifies
John 15:26
"But when the Comforter is come, whom I will send unto you from the Father, even the Spirit of truth, which proceedeth from the Father, he shall testify of me."
The Holy Spirit testifies. He bears witness. He affirms truth.
The Holy Spirit testifies of Jesus. He affirms that Jesus is real, that He's God's Son, that He died and rose again.
He testifies inside you. Creating an inner knowing. An inner conviction. You don't just believe in Jesus with your head. The Holy Spirit testifies in your spirit that Jesus is real.
When you're doubting, when you're wavering, the Holy Spirit comes and testifies: "Jesus is real. He's Lord. He loves you." That's powerful.
He Appoints
Acts 13:2
"As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them."
The Holy Spirit appoints. He assigns you to specific work. Specific calling. Specific purpose.
The Holy Spirit separated Barnabas and Paul for specific work. He appointed them to a specific assignment. He does that for you too.
He shows you: "This is your calling. This is what I'm assigning you to do." Not a job necessarily. A calling. A mission. A purpose.
For me, it's clear. The Holy Spirit appointed me to ministry. To writing. To speaking. To helping people encounter Jesus. He's called me to use my story—my dialysis, my caregiver journey, my faith—to help others.
The Holy Spirit knows your calling before you do. He appoints you to it.
He Sanctifies
Romans 15:16
"That I should be the minister of Jesus Christ to the Gentiles, ministering the gospel of God, that the offering up of the Gentiles might be acceptable, being sanctified by the Holy Ghost."
The Holy Spirit sanctifies you. That means He makes you holy. He sets you apart. He transforms you from the inside out.
You're sanctified by the Holy Ghost. Made holy. Set apart. This isn't a one-time thing. It's ongoing.
Every day, the Holy Spirit is working to conform you to the image of Christ. He's transforming you from glory to glory. Making you more like Jesus.
When you cooperate with that process—when you submit to His transforming work—you become holy. Set apart. Different from the world. People notice. They see something different about you. That's the Holy Spirit sanctifying you.
He Comforts
John 14:16
"And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever."
The Holy Spirit comforts. When you're hurting, He shows up.
Jesus said the Holy Spirit is your Comforter. Parakletos—one called alongside to help.
When you're in pain, the Holy Spirit comes alongside. He doesn't remove the pain necessarily, but He comforts you in it. He reminds you that you're not alone. He gives you peace. He carries you through.
I've walked through some incredibly hard seasons. Dialysis. Caregiving for Calvin. Loss. Grief. Uncertainty. And in every single one, the Holy Spirit has been there. Not fixing it immediately, but comforting me through it.
He Regenerates
John 3:6
"That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."
The Holy Spirit regenerates. He makes you new. He gives you new life.
When you're born of the Spirit, you're born again. Regenerated. New.
The Holy Spirit is the agent of regeneration. He takes your dead spirit and makes it alive. He gives you spiritual rebirth.
That's how you become a Christian. Not through works. Not through religion. Through the regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. He literally brings you to life spiritually.
He Seals
Ephesians 4:30
"And grieve not the Holy Ghost of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption."
The Holy Spirit seals you. That means He marks you as God's property. He puts His stamp on you.
You're sealed by the Holy Spirit unto the day of redemption. That means you're marked as belonging to God. You're secured until Jesus returns.
Nothing can break that seal. Not your mistakes. Not your failures. Not your circumstances. You're sealed.
That's security. That's guarantee. That's promise.
He Prays
Romans 8:26
"Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit himself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered."
The Holy Spirit prays. He intercedes for you.
The Holy Spirit prays for you. Intercedes for you. With groanings that can't even be expressed in words.
There are situations too deep for words. Too complex for language. And the Holy Spirit prays for you in those moments. Bringing your needs before God in ways your words never could.
That's incredible. Your advocate is constantly praying for you.
He Glorifies Christ
John 16:14
"He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you."
The Holy Spirit's primary mission is to glorify Jesus. To point people to Jesus. To reveal Jesus.
The Holy Spirit glorifies Jesus. Makes Jesus famous. Reveals who Jesus is.
That's His passion. That's His purpose. When the Holy Spirit is working in your life, Jesus becomes bigger. Clearer. More real.
He Ministers
1 Corinthians 12:8, 11
"For to one is given by the Spirit the word of wisdom; to another the word of knowledge by the same Spirit; ... But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will."
The Holy Spirit ministers to you and through you.
The Holy Spirit distributes gifts. He ministers through spiritual gifts. Wisdom, knowledge, healing, faith, prophecy, discernment—all distributed by the Spirit.
He uses you to minister to others. You might have the gift of hospitality. The Holy Spirit uses that to make people feel welcome. You might have the gift of encouragement. The Holy Spirit uses that to lift people up. You might have the gift of wisdom. The Holy Spirit uses that to counsel people.
The Holy Spirit is ministering through you constantly.
He Baptizes
1 Corinthians 12:13
"For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit."
The Holy Spirit baptizes. He places you into the Body of Christ.
By one Spirit, you're baptized into one body—the Body of Christ.
The Holy Spirit connects you to other believers. Makes you part of God's family. Unites you with the church.
He's Doing All 15 Right Now
Here's what I want you to understand:
The Holy Spirit is doing all of these things right now. In your life. Today.
He's speaking to you. Teaching you. Guiding you. Forbidding things that would hurt you. Reproving you when you're wrong. Testifying to you about Jesus. Appointing you to your calling. Sanctifying you. Comforting you. Regenerating you. Sealing you. Praying for you. Glorifying Christ through you. Ministering through you. Baptizing you into the Body of Christ.
All at once. Right now.
And you get to cooperate with all of it.
How to Cooperate
So how do you cooperate with all these functions?
Stay sensitive.
Pay attention to the Holy Spirit's voice. Notice when He's speaking, guiding, forbidding, comforting.
Obey immediately.
When the Holy Spirit tells you to do something, do it. When He tells you not to do something, don't do it. Don't question. Don't hesitate. Obey.
Ask for what you need.
If you need wisdom, ask the Holy Spirit. If you need comfort, ask the Holy Spirit. If you need guidance, ask the Holy Spirit.
Thank Him.
Acknowledge His work. Give Him credit. Express gratitude for what He's doing in your life.
Spend time with Him.
The more time you spend with the Holy Spirit, the better you know Him, the easier it is to recognize His voice and follow His leading.
Reflection Questions
- Which of the 15 functions of the Holy Spirit do you most need right now? Have you specifically asked Him for that?
- Can you recognize the Holy Spirit's voice in your life? What does it sound like? What does it feel like?
- Where are you not obeying the Holy Spirit? What's stopping you?
- How would your life change if you cooperated with all 15 functions daily?
Prayer
Father, thank You for the Holy Spirit. Thank You for these fifteen ways He's working in my life.
Help me recognize each one. Help me be sensitive to His voice. Help me follow His leading without hesitation.
When He speaks, help me listen. When He teaches, help me learn. When He guides, help me follow. When He forbids, help me obey. When He reproves, help me repent.
Help me receive His comfort. Help me embrace His sanctification. Help me celebrate His sealing. Help me cooperate with His prayer.
Most of all, help me keep Jesus central. Help me let the Holy Spirit glorify Christ through every aspect of my life.
I want to live in active cooperation with the Holy Spirit. I want every day to reflect His work in me.
