Opening Question
Okay, so Jesus died for your sins. That's the foundation.
But how does that actually work?
Like, mechanically — how does one person's death pay for another person's sin?
Here's the answer:
Jesus lived a sinless life. Jesus was the perfect sacrifice.
The Problem With You and Me
Here's the issue: You need to be forgiven for your sins. But forgiveness doesn't come cheap.
Listen to what the law says:
LEVITICUS 17:11
"For the life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls."
The law required a sacrifice. Blood had to be shed to cover sin.
Not just any blood, either. It had to be the blood of something perfect. Something without blemish. Something pure.
In the Old Testament, people would bring lambs to the priest. The lamb would be examined. If the lamb had any defect, it couldn't be sacrificed. It had to be perfect.
And the lamb would die so that the person's sin could be covered.
But here's the problem: A lamb's blood could only cover sin temporarily.
It had to be done over and over again.
Every year. Every month. Every time you sinned.
It was never enough.
Jesus: The Perfect Lamb
So God looked at this system and said: "I'm going to send My Son. And My Son is going to be the perfect sacrifice. Once and for all."
Listen to what John the Baptist said when he saw Jesus:
JOHN 1:29
"The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world."
Jesus is the Lamb of God.
Not a lamb. The Lamb. The final, ultimate, perfect sacrifice.
Why? Because Jesus lived a sinless life.
Jesus had no defects. Jesus had no flaws. Jesus had no sin.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:21
"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."
Jesus knew no sin. Jesus was pure. Jesus was perfect.
And that's what made Jesus qualified to be the sacrifice for everyone.
What Sinless Means
Now, let's be clear about what it means that Jesus was sinless.
Jesus lived on earth. Jesus faced the same temptations you face. Jesus experienced hunger, exhaustion, pain, betrayal, fear.
Jesus was human in every way except one: Jesus never gave in to sin.
Jesus never lied. Jesus never stole. Jesus never lusted. Jesus never got angry at someone unjustly. Jesus never turned away from someone who needed help.
Jesus lived perfectly. Every moment. Every day.
The Greek word for sinless is anamartetos — it means "free from sin" or "not having sinned."
Jesus was completely free from sin. Not because Jesus didn't have the opportunity to sin. But because Jesus chose not to.
That's what makes Jesus different from every other human being.
The Sacrifice
So because Jesus was sinless, Jesus was qualified to be the sacrifice.
Jesus went to the cross. Jesus shed His blood. Jesus died.
And in that moment, something happened: Jesus' blood covered the sin of the entire world.
1 JOHN 1:7
"But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin."
Jesus' blood cleanses you from all sin.
Not some sin. Not most sin. All sin.
Everything you've done. Everything you've thought. Everything you feel ashamed of.
Jesus' blood covers it.
Why His Blood Works
Why does Jesus' blood work when a lamb's blood didn't?
Because Jesus is infinite. Jesus is God. Jesus' blood is not just the blood of one person.
Jesus' blood has the power of eternity in it.
When Jesus died, it wasn't just one death. It was the death that paid for all sins — past, present, and future.
HEBREWS 9:27-28
"And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many."
Christ was offered once. One time. One death. And it covers all sins.
That's why you don't have to keep sacrificing. That's why you don't have to keep earning forgiveness.
Jesus' one sacrifice is enough. Forever.
What This Means for You
So how does Jesus provide for your salvation?
By living perfectly so that Jesus qualifies as the sacrifice.
By dying so that the payment is made.
By shedding His blood so that your sins are covered.
EPHESIANS 1:7
"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace."
Through Jesus' blood, you have forgiveness.
That's how Jesus provides for your salvation.
Not because you earned it. Not because you deserve it.
But because Jesus paid for it.

- Do you understand that Jesus' perfection is what qualified Him to die for you? How does that make you feel?
- If Jesus' blood covers all your sin, what are you still holding onto shame for? What would it mean to let that go?
- Why do you think Jesus was willing to be the sacrifice for you?
A Prayer
Father, thank You for sending Jesus. Thank You that Jesus lived perfectly so Jesus could die for me.
Help me understand the weight of what Jesus did. Help me grasp that Jesus' blood covers my sin.
I receive the forgiveness that Jesus paid for. I release the shame I've been carrying.
Thank You for Jesus' sacrifice. Thank You that one death covers everything.

Say these out loud. Let the truth of the cross settle deep in your spirit.
- Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world — not a lamb, but The Lamb.
- Jesus knew no sin. He lived perfectly so He could be the perfect sacrifice for me.
- The blood of Jesus cleanses me from all sin. Not some. Not most. All.
- Jesus was offered once for the sins of many. One sacrifice. One death. Enough forever.
- I have redemption through His blood. My forgiveness comes according to the riches of His grace — not my effort.
- Jesus became sin for me so I could become the righteousness of God. The exchange is complete.
- I release my shame. Jesus' blood covered it. I don't have to carry it anymore.
