Opening
I'm going to be honest with you:
There was a season of my Christian life where I prayed, I went to church, I did the things you're supposed to do.
But I wasn't actually led by the Holy Spirit.
I was doing my own thing, hoping God would bless it.
And you know what? It was exhausting. Ineffective. Lonely.
Then something shifted.
I made a decision: I was going to stop leading my own life and let the Holy Spirit lead instead.
Not figuratively. Literally. Every decision. Every word. Every step.
That decision changed everything. And that's what Part 3 is about: Learning to actually let the Holy Spirit lead you the way He's meant to.
You Have to Give Him Permission
Here's what most people don't understand:
The Holy Spirit won't override your will.
He won't force you. He won't manipulate you. He won't drag you where you don't want to go.
He asks for permission. He invites. He suggests. And then He waits for you to choose.
Revelation 3:20
"Behold, I stand at the door, and knock: if any man hear my voice, and open the door, I will come in to him, and will sup with him, and he with me."
Jesus stands at the door and knocks. He doesn't kick the door down. He knocks. If you open the door, He comes in. If you don't, He respects that.
Same with the Holy Spirit. He's knocking. He's offering to lead. He's asking for permission.
You have to grant that permission.
You have to say: "Holy Spirit, I'm giving You permission to lead my life. I'm submitting my will to Your will. I'm following Your direction." Without that permission, He won't force leadership on you.
Recognize His Voice
The first step to being led by the Holy Spirit is recognizing His voice. How do you do that?
The Holy Spirit's voice has characteristics:
It's gentle.
Not harsh. Not condemning. Gentle. Like a still, small whisper.
It's clear.
When the Holy Spirit speaks, you understand. There's no confusion.
It's consistent with Scripture.
The Holy Spirit will never tell you to do something that contradicts God's Word.
It brings peace.
When the Holy Spirit speaks, there's a peace that follows. Even if it's difficult direction, there's an underlying peace.
It points you toward Jesus.
The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ. So His voice always points you toward Jesus, toward holiness, toward becoming more like Christ.
It's personal.
The Holy Spirit doesn't speak in generalities. He speaks specifically to you about your specific situation.
1 Kings 19:11-13
"And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the Lord. And, behold, the Lord passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the Lord; but the Lord was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the Lord was not in the earthquake: And after the earthquake a fire; but the Lord was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave."
The Lord wasn't in the wind, the earthquake, or the fire. The Lord was in the still, small voice. That's how the Holy Spirit speaks. Not in the loud, dramatic moments. In the still, small voice.
I learned to recognize that voice. I pay attention to the gentle nudges. The quiet impressions. The peace that says: "Yes, this way." And I ignore the loud, anxious, pushy thoughts. That's not the Holy Spirit.
Distinguish Between His Voice and Yours
You have to learn the difference between the Holy Spirit's voice and your own thoughts.
Your Thoughts Often Are:
- • Driven by fear or desire
- • Logical but not necessarily right
- • Influenced by what you want
- • Anxious or pushy
- • Inconsistent with Scripture or God's character
The Holy Spirit's Voice Is:
- • Calm and peaceful
- • Often illogical from a worldly perspective
- • Focused on God's will, not yours
- • Gentle and persistent
- • Always consistent with Scripture
How do you learn the difference?
- Spend time with the Holy Spirit. The more you're around Him, the more you recognize His voice. Like recognizing your mother's voice in a crowd.
- Test it against Scripture. Ask: "Does this align with God's Word?" If it doesn't, it's not the Holy Spirit.
- Wait for peace. When the Holy Spirit speaks, there's peace. If you're anxious or unsure, wait. The Holy Spirit will confirm it.
- Ask for confirmation. The Holy Spirit is happy to confirm His direction through multiple means—a word from Scripture, a thought, a conversation, circumstances.
I've developed such familiarity with the Holy Spirit's voice that I don't even have to think about it anymore. I just know.
Daily Dependence
Here's the secret to being led by the Holy Spirit: Daily dependence.
Not once-a-week dependence. Not when-I'm-in-crisis dependence. Daily.
Matthew 6:11
"Give us this day our daily bread."
Jesus taught us to ask for daily bread. Daily provision. Daily dependence on God.
I wake up every morning and I start my day with the Holy Spirit.
I don't check my phone. I don't turn on the news. I don't start planning my day.
I sit down and I commune with the Holy Spirit. I say: "Holy Spirit, I need You today. Lead me. Guide me. Show me what I need to see. Keep me from what I need to avoid. Give me wisdom. Give me direction."
And then I listen. I'm quiet. I let Him speak. Sometimes it's a word. Sometimes it's a feeling. Sometimes it's just a deep knowing.
And throughout the day, I check back in.
- Before a conversation: "Holy Spirit, what do I need to say here?"
- Before a decision: "Holy Spirit, which way?"
- When I'm afraid: "Holy Spirit, what's the truth?"
- Before I send an email: "Holy Spirit, should I send this?"
Constant dependence. Moment by moment.
Obedience Is Everything
Here's what determines whether the Holy Spirit will continue to lead you: Your obedience.
When the Holy Spirit speaks and you obey, He speaks again. The channel of communication stays open.
When the Holy Spirit speaks and you don't obey, the channel closes. He won't keep speaking if you're not listening.
John 14:23
"Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with him."
If you love Jesus, you'll keep His words. You'll obey. And the Father and Son will make their home with you.
Obedience opens the door. Disobedience closes it.
I made a covenant with the Holy Spirit: When He speaks, I obey. No questions. No hesitation.
That might sound extreme. But it's changed my life. Because I know: His direction is always better than mine.
Listen for Different Types of Communication
The Holy Spirit communicates in multiple ways. Learn to recognize them all:
Through Scripture.
A verse jumps out at you. Suddenly becomes alive. That's the Holy Spirit speaking through Scripture.
Through circumstances.
Doors open or close. Opportunities appear or disappear. The Holy Spirit is directing through circumstances.
Through people.
Someone says something that hits you. Exactly what you needed to hear. That's the Holy Spirit using that person.
Through impressions.
A thought or feeling that comes with a sense of knowing. Not logical, but certain.
Through peace or unrest.
When something aligns with God's will, there's peace. When something doesn't, there's unrest.
Through physical sensations.
Sometimes it's a knowing in your spirit. A burning in your heart. A sensing in your body.
Through dreams.
The Holy Spirit communicates through dreams. Keep a journal of significant dreams.
Through audible voice.
Rare, but it happens. The Holy Spirit can speak audibly.
I experience all of these. Scripture jumps out at me constantly. Circumstances shift. People say exactly what I need to hear. I get impressions that prove accurate. I feel peace or unrest. I have dreams. I hear the Holy Spirit's voice. The more you pay attention, the more you'll experience all of these.
Test Everything
But here's the caution: Test everything.
Not everything that seems spiritual is from the Holy Spirit.
1 John 4:1
"Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world."
Test the spirits. Determine if they're from God. How do you test?
- Does it line up with Scripture? If it contradicts God's Word, it's not from the Holy Spirit.
- Does it glorify Jesus? The Holy Spirit glorifies Christ. If a word doesn't point people to Jesus, it's not from the Holy Spirit.
- Does it produce fruit? The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. If a word produces the opposite, it's not from the Holy Spirit.
- Do mature believers confirm it? Share it with people you trust. Do they recognize it as from God?
I test everything. Even when I think it's from the Holy Spirit, I verify it. Against Scripture. Against the fruit. Against wise counsel.
Surrender Your Plans
Here's what's hard: Surrendering your plans.
You have an idea of how your life should go. A career path. A relationship plan. A timeline.
And then the Holy Spirit says something different.
That requires surrender.
Proverbs 16:9
"A man's heart deviseth his way: but the Lord establisheth his steps."
A man devises his way, but the Lord establishes his steps. You can plan all you want. But if God has a different plan, His plan will be established.
So why not surrender from the start?
That's what I did years ago. I said: "Holy Spirit, I'm giving You my life. Not my plans. Not my dreams. My actual life. Lead me wherever You want me to go."
It was terrifying. And liberating. Because His plans are better than mine. Every single time.
Build a Relationship
The key to all of this is relationship.
You don't follow someone you don't know. You don't trust someone you haven't experienced.
Build a relationship with the Holy Spirit.
Talk to Him. Listen to Him. Spend time with Him. Learn His heart. Experience His faithfulness.
The more intimate your relationship, the easier it is to follow His leading.
I talk to the Holy Spirit like I talk to my best friend. Because that's what He is.
I tell Him my fears. My hopes. My questions. I ask His opinion. I seek His wisdom. I celebrate with Him. I grieve with Him.
It's a real relationship. And because of that relationship, following His leading feels natural.
Expect Resistance
Following the Holy Spirit will create resistance.
From the world. From people who don't understand. From your own flesh.
The world doesn't want you led by the Holy Spirit. The world wants you led by fear, desire, and selfishness.
So when you start following the Holy Spirit, you'll face pushback. People might think you're weird. They might not understand your choices. They might judge you.
Romans 8:6
"For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace."
When you're spiritually minded, there's peace—even if the world doesn't understand.
That peace is worth all the resistance.
I've made decisions the world thought were insane. But the Holy Spirit said yes. So I did it. And every single time, those decisions bore fruit.
You're Not Alone
Here's the beautiful promise:
You're not alone in this.
The Holy Spirit is with you. All the time. In every decision. In every moment. In every season.
Matthew 28:20
"Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world."
Jesus is with you always. Even unto the end of the world. That's the Holy Spirit's presence. Constant. Faithful. Reliable. You can follow His leading without fear because He's with you.
Your New Assignment
So here's what I want you to do as we close Part 3:
Make the same decision I made: You're going to let the Holy Spirit lead your life.
Not partially. Completely.
You're going to wake up tomorrow and say: "Holy Spirit, lead me today."
You're going to listen for His voice.
You're going to recognize His direction.
You're going to obey without hesitation.
And you're going to follow Him, day by day, step by step.
It won't be easy. It won't be conventional. It won't make sense to everyone.
But it will be the best decision you've ever made.
Because the Holy Spirit knows where you need to go. He knows what you need. He knows the plans He has for you.
And if you'll follow His leading, your life will become everything God intended.
Reflection Questions
- Are you willing to let the Holy Spirit lead your entire life? What's holding you back?
- What area of your life are you still trying to control? What would happen if you surrendered it to the Holy Spirit?
- How well do you know the Holy Spirit's voice? What can you do to develop that familiarity?
- What decision are you facing right now that needs the Holy Spirit's direction? Ask Him today.
Prayer
Father, I'm ready to let the Holy Spirit lead my life. Completely. Not partially. All of it.
Help me recognize His voice clearly and distinctly. Help me distinguish His voice from my own thoughts.
Give me courage to obey when He speaks, even when it doesn't make sense. Even when it's hard. Even when others don't understand.
Make me sensitive to His leading. Alert to His voice. Responsive to His direction.
I want a deep, intimate relationship with the Holy Spirit. I want to depend on Him moment by moment. I want to follow His leading without hesitation.
Teach me to surrender my plans and embrace His. Help me trust that His direction is better than mine.
Most of all, help me understand that I'm never alone. The Holy Spirit is with me. Always. Leading me. Guiding me. Protecting me.
I give You permission to lead my life. Do with me what You will.
In Jesus' Name, Amen.
The Holy Spirit is ready to lead your life — every decision, every word, every step. All He needs is your permission.
