Opening Question

You got saved. You became a Christian. You believe in Jesus.

But you're still struggling with sin.

Maybe it's:

  • Drinking
  • Pornography
  • Anger
  • Lying
  • Sexual sin
  • Gossip
  • Whatever it is for you

And you're thinking: "If I'm really saved, shouldn't this be gone by now?"

Let me tell you something: Being saved doesn't mean your struggles disappear overnight. But it does mean you have the power to overcome.

You've Been Set Free

First, understand this clearly:

When you're born again, you're set free from sin's dominion.

Sin no longer has power over you.

Listen:

Romans 6:9-10

"Knowing that Christ being raised from the dead dieth no more. Death hath no more dominion over him. For in that he died, he died unto sin once: but in that he liveth, he liveth unto God."

Jesus conquered sin. Death can't touch Jesus anymore. Sin can't claim Jesus.

And because you're in Christ, the same is true for you.

Sin has no dominion over you.

That doesn't mean you'll never be tempted. It means sin can't control you. Sin can't own you. Sin can't define you.

You're Not Enslaved Anymore

Before you were saved, you were enslaved to sin.

Sin was your master. You had to obey it.

But now? You're free.

Listen:

Romans 6:6-7

"Knowing this, that our old man is crucified with him, that the body of sin might be destroyed, that henceforth we should not serve sin. For he that is dead is freed from sin."

Your old self was crucified with Christ. The control of sin has been destroyed.

You're freed from sin.

Not freed from temptation. Freed from sin's control. There's a difference.

The Battle Is Real

Now, being free from sin's dominion doesn't mean the struggle goes away immediately.

Sin wants to tempt you. Sin wants to pull you back.

Listen:

1 Peter 5:8

"Be sober, be vigilant; because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion, walketh about, seeking whom he may devour."

The enemy is real. He's trying to pull you back into sin.

So you'll struggle. You'll be tempted. You'll face battles.

But here's the key: You have the power to overcome.

Declare Your Righteousness

When you're struggling with sin, here's what you do:

Declare your righteousness in Christ.

You're not the person you were. You're not defined by your sin. You're righteous because of Jesus.

Say it out loud: "I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus."

Listen:

2 Corinthians 5:21

"For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him."

Jesus became sin so you could become righteous.

You are righteous. Not because you're good. Because Jesus is good.

When you're struggling with pornography, declare: "I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I'm not enslaved to this. I'm free."

When you're struggling with anger, declare: "I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I'm not controlled by anger. I'm controlled by Christ."

When you're struggling with drinking, declare: "I am the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus. I'm not enslaved to alcohol. I'm free in Christ."

Keep declaring it. Even when you're being attacked. Even when you're tempted. Declare who you are in Christ.

Break the Hold

Sin has a hold because of the thoughts you entertain.

When you think about sin, when you fantasize about it, when you anticipate it, you strengthen the hold.

So here's what you do:

1

Reject the thought.

When the thought of sin comes, say no to it. Don't entertain it. Don't think about it.

2

Replace it with Scripture.

Fill your mind with God's Word instead. Quote Scripture. Remind yourself of truth.

3

Ask for help.

Call someone. Tell them you're struggling. Get accountability. Get prayer.

4

Remove the temptation.

If it's pornography, get accountability software. If it's alcohol, stop going to bars. If it's sexual sin, don't put yourself in situations where it's easy to fall.

Listen:

2 Corinthians 10:5

"Casting down imaginations, and every high thing that exalteth itself against the knowledge of God, and bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ."

Take every thought captive. Make it obey Christ.

The Struggle Gets Less and Less

Here's the beautiful thing: As you declare your freedom and resist sin, the hold gets weaker.

The first time you refuse to give in to that temptation, it's hard.

The fifth time, it's still hard.

The tenth time, it's getting easier.

The fiftieth time, the power is broken.

The addiction that had you for years can be conquered in months when you partner with Christ.

Listen:

Romans 12:2

"And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind: that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God."

Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.

As you think differently, speak differently, act differently, the old patterns lose power.

Repent and Keep Moving

Now, you're going to stumble. You're going to fall into sin sometimes.

That's real.

When you do, here's what you do:

1

Repent immediately.

Turn away from it. Tell God you're sorry. Ask for forgiveness.

2

Don't wallow in shame.

You're forgiven. It's done. Move on.

3

Keep declaring your freedom.

Don't let one fall define you. You're still the righteousness of God in Christ Jesus.

Listen:

1 John 1:9

"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness."

When you confess, you're forgiven and cleansed. Period.

Don't live in shame. That's not of God. Move forward.

You're Stronger Than You Think

You have the power to overcome. More power than you realize.

The same power that raised Jesus from the dead lives inside you.

Romans 8:11

"But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by the Spirit that dwelleth in you."

The Spirit that raised Jesus is in you. Quickening you. Empowering you. Giving you strength.

You're not weak. You're not helpless. You're not bound.

You're strong. You're free. You can overcome.

Reflection Questions

  1. What sin are you struggling with? Name it specifically.
  2. Do you believe you've been set free from sin's dominion? Why or why not?
  3. Will you declare your righteousness in Christ? Can you say it right now?
  4. What specific step can you take today to break sin's hold? (Confess to someone, remove temptation, renew your mind)

Prayer

Father, I'm struggling with sin. Help me.

(Name the specific sin)

I know I'm not enslaved to this anymore. I know I've been set free. Help me believe that. Help me live like it.

Give me the power to resist temptation. Give me the courage to repent when I fall. Give me the strength to keep going.

Help me declare my righteousness in Christ. Help me refuse to be defined by my sin.

Break the hold of this sin. Little by little. Day by day. Until it has no power over me.

Thank You for freedom. Thank You for the power of Christ. Thank You for never giving up on me.

In Jesus' Name, Amen.

The same Spirit that raised Jesus from the dead lives in you. Sin has no dominion — you're free. Walk in it.
