She Was Standing Right There

Here we are. Eight sessions. We started with the two hardest verses in the conversation — and we did not run from them. We looked at Ephesus and Artemis, at a rare Greek word Paul used nowhere else, at three situational silences inside one chapter, and at the verse almost nobody quotes: let a woman learn. We found that the strongest case on the other side is real and deserves a real answer — and that the answer is there, in the text, if you read it whole instead of in fragments.

Then we turned to the stories God wrote. Deborah, who judged a nation and commanded an army. Huldah, who validated Scripture for a king. Miriam, sent by God at the founding moment of the nation. Anna, who proclaimed the Messiah in the temple. Philip's four daughters, prophesying under Paul's own roof. Pentecost, where God poured out His Spirit on daughters just as He promised. Priscilla, who taught a preacher more accurately. Phoebe, the diakonos and prostatis. Junia, outstanding among the apostles. The women at the empty tomb — the first evangelists, sent by Jesus Himself. The woman at the well — the first public evangelist to the Samaritans.

Then we looked at the women who came after — Jarena Lee to Vashti McKenzie — who read the same Bible and preached anyway. And we talked about the wounds, and forgiveness, and making room for the next woman.

Now we close. Not with another argument. With a declaration, a set of guardrails, and a commissioning.

"You are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus, for all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus. If you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise."

This is Paul. The same Paul who wrote both of the stop-sign verses. And here he declares that in Christ, the categories that divide us in this age — ethnicity, social status, and gender — do not determine our standing before God or our inheritance in His kingdom. This verse does not erase the fact that we are still male and female in this life. Paul is not saying gender disappears at baptism. He is saying that in the body of Christ, gender is not a barrier to inheritance, to calling, to participation in the promises of God.

If a woman is an heir according to the promise — a full heir — then the gifts of the Spirit, the call to ministry, and the authority to speak God's Word belong to her as much as to any man. The ground at the foot of the cross is level. It is the only level ground in the universe. And the church is supposed to be a colony of that level ground in a world still arranged by hierarchy.

Here is what we have established across these eight sessions:

1. The two hardest verses have context. 1 Timothy 2 is written into a city drowning in false teaching, and 1 Corinthians 14 is one of three situational silences in a chapter about order in the meeting. Neither one cancels what God has been doing since the Red Sea.
2. God raised up women to lead His people. Deborah judged Israel and commanded its army. Huldah authenticated Scripture for a king. Miriam was sent by God. These are not exceptions; they are evidence.
3. God promised to pour out His Spirit on daughters. Joel said it. Peter declared it fulfilled at Pentecost. The Spirit was given to sons and daughters alike — and they both spoke.
4. Paul worked alongside women in ministry. Priscilla taught Apollos. Phoebe was a diakonos. Junia was outstanding among the apostles. Romans 16 is a monument to women's labor in the gospel.
5. Jesus trusted women with the most important message in history. He appeared to Mary Magdalene first. He told the women to go and tell. The first preachers of the resurrection were women.
6. Women have preached anyway — and God has backed them. From Jarena Lee to the women in your own church, the Spirit has not stopped gifting and calling women.
7. Galatians 3:28 is the banner over all of it. In Christ, the ground is level. Your gender is not a barrier to your inheritance — or your calling.
