It Is Not a Statue.
It Is Whatever Sits on the Throne.
What an Idol Really Is, and How to Find the Ones You Have
When you hear the word idol, what comes to mind? Probably a statue. A golden calf. A carved image on a shelf in an ancient temple, with people bowing down in front of it. That is what idolatry looked like three thousand years ago. It is not what it looks like now. The form has changed, but the function has not.
In Ezekiel 14, God confronts the elders of Israel. These are not people bowing to statues. These are the leaders of the nation — religious men, respected men, men who would tell you they worshiped Yahweh. And God says to Ezekiel: These men have set up idols in their hearts. Not in their houses. Not on their altars. In their hearts. An idol is not primarily an object. It is a position. It is whatever sits on the throne that belongs to God.
Martin Luther said that whatever your heart clings to and relies upon — that is your god. And he was right. An idol is a good thing you have asked to do a God-sized job. It is something you are looking to for security, identity, meaning, or salvation that was never designed to carry that weight. And the scariest thing about idols is that they are invisible to the person holding them — which is exactly why God asked the question through Ezekiel.
Idols are not obvious. The elders in Ezekiel had no idea. They came to inquire of the Lord while carrying them. So how do you actually find one? Ask what this thing has been assigned to do. There are four jobs that belong only to God — and when a good thing quietly takes one of them, it has become an idol. These questions are not comfortable, but they are honest, and they are drawn from Scripture.
Does it tell me who I am? If losing this would not just hurt me but erase me — if I would not know who I was without it — then it is not just something I have. It has become where my identity lives. Your job can do this. Your role as a mother can do this. Your ministry can do this.
Does it tell me I am safe? Whatever you reach for when you are afraid is doing God's job. That may be a bank balance. It may be a person. It may be control — and control is one of the most common idols in the Church, and one of the most respectable.
Does it tell me I am worth something? If you need this in order to feel like you have value, it is sitting in a chair that belongs to Christ. Approval is an idol. Achievement is an idol. Being needed is an idol — and it hides beautifully inside church work.
Does it get my first and my best? Not merely your time — your first time. Your best energy. The thing you think about before you are fully awake. Jesus said where your treasure is, your heart will be also. Follow your calendar and your bank statement and your attention, and you will find what you actually worship.
Here is the mistake almost everyone makes when they realize they have an idol. They try to tear it down with willpower. I will stop caring so much. I will stop wanting it. I will try harder. And it never works. Willpower is not strong enough to dethrone a god. The only thing strong enough to dethrone an idol is a bigger worship.
You do not defeat idols by not loving them. You defeat idols by loving God more. When the beauty of Christ fills your vision, the things you used to cling to start to look like what they are — good gifts, maybe, but terrible gods. You cannot stare at the sun and be impressed by a flashlight. The answer to idolatry is not primarily a discipline. It is a devotion. Turn your eyes upon Jesus, and the things of earth will grow strangely dim — not because you fought them into submission, but because they cannot compete.
A Prayer for a Rightly Ordered Heart
Father, I ask You to search me and know my heart. Test me and know my anxious thoughts. Show me if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
I do not want anything sitting on the throne that belongs to You. Expose the idols I cannot see. Show me the thing that tells me who I am, the thing I reach for when I am afraid, the thing I need to feel I am worth something, and the thing that gets my first and my best. Do not let me come to You carrying what I should have left at the cross.
I will not fight my idols with willpower. I will fight them with worship. Turn my eyes upon Jesus until the things I cling to lose their grip on me — not because I wrestled them away, but because they cannot compete with Him. You alone sit on the throne. Amen.

I will not fight my idols with willpower. I will fight them with worship. The only thing strong enough to dethrone a god is a bigger worship.
I am not afraid to ask the hard questions — what tells me who I am, what do I reach for when I am afraid, what do I need to feel I am worth something, and what gets my first and my best?
Good things make terrible gods. I will let good gifts be good gifts, and I will let God be God.
When I turn my eyes upon Jesus, the things of earth grow dim — not because I wrestled them away, but because they cannot compete.
