You are not just one thing.
That's the lie the world tells you. It tells you that you're just your body. That you're just what people see. That you're just your appearance, your age, your physical abilities. But that's not true.
You are three things. You are spirit. You are soul. You are body.
And understanding this one thing — that you are made in God's image as a three-part being — is the foundation of everything in the Christian life. It's the key to freedom. It's the key to understanding who you really are. It's the key to living victoriously in the kingdom of God.
But most people don't understand this. They think their body is all they are. They think their thoughts and feelings are all they are. They don't know they have a spirit. They don't know the spirit is the real them. They don't know that the spirit is eternal.
And so they live their whole lives trying to satisfy their body and their mind, never realizing that their real self — their spirit — is hungry for God. But once you understand this, everything changes.
Think About Water
The Perfect Way to Understand What You Are
Here's what's interesting about water: it's three different things depending on its state.
Solid. You can hold it. You can see it clearly. It has a specific shape. It melts away if it gets warm. It's temporary — it won't last forever.
This is what flows. This is what you drink. This is what moves and fills containers and takes different forms. It's interactive. It adapts. It's always moving, always flowing, always changing shape based on its environment.
Invisible. You can't hold it. You can't see it. But it's real. It rises up. It's eternal in a sense — once water becomes steam, it rises into the atmosphere and never comes back down as the same physical water. It's connected to something bigger.
Your Body Is Like Ice
The Temporary You
Your body is like ice. It's solid. It's visible. It's what the world sees when it looks at you. But here's the most important thing to understand: Your body is not eternal. Your body will age. Your body will get tired. Your body will eventually stop working. Your body is temporary.
2 CORINTHIANS 5:1
"For we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands."
Your body is like a tent. It's temporary housing. You're living in it right now, but it's not forever. This is important because the world wants you to think your body is everything — that your appearance, your physical abilities, your age define your worth. But that's a lie.
Your body matters — yes. God made your body. Jesus is going to raise your body. Take care of it. Respect it. But don't believe that it's all you are. Because if your body is all you think you are, then when your body gets older, you think you're getting less valuable. When your body gets sick, you think you're becoming less yourself.
But that's only ice melting. The real you — your spirit — is untouched.
1 THESSALONIANS 4:16
"For the Lord himself will come down from heaven, with a loud command, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet call of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first."
One day, Jesus is coming back. And He's going to raise your body. He's going to give you a new, eternal, glorified body. Your body won't melt away forever — it will be transformed and made eternal.
Your Soul Is Like Water
The Interactive You
Your soul is like liquid water. It's the part of you that flows and interacts with the world around you. Your soul is your mind (how you think and understand), your will (your ability to choose and decide), and your emotions (your feelings — joy, sadness, anger, fear, love, excitement).
Your soul is like water because it flows. Your emotions flow — one moment you're happy, the next you're sad. Your thoughts flow — you think one thing, then you think another. Your will flows — you make decisions and they lead you in different directions.
Your soul is also like water because it adapts to its environment. Put water in a square container and it becomes square. Put it in a round container and it becomes round. Your soul does the same thing. If you're around joyful people, your soul tends toward joy. If you're around bitter people, your soul tends toward bitterness. Your soul is influenced by its environment.
Here's what's important: Your soul is not eternal. Your mind will not last forever in the way it exists now. Your emotions will not last forever. But right now, your soul is how you interact with the world — and it's incredibly important. But it's not the real you. The real you is your spirit.
Your Spirit Is Like Steam
The Real You
Your spirit is like steam. It's invisible, but it's real. It rises up toward heaven. It's eternal. It's the image of God in you. Your spirit is the real you.
GENESIS 1:27
"So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them."
You are made in the image of God. Not your body — your body is like ice, it's temporary. Not just your soul — your soul is like water, it's interactive but not eternal. Your SPIRIT is made in the image of God.
And here's what's profound: Your spirit is three parts, just like God is three parts. God is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit — three in one. You are spirit, soul, and body — three in one. You're made in His image.
ROMANS 8:16
"The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."
When you become a Christian, the Holy Spirit comes to live in your spirit. Your spirit becomes joined with God's Spirit. Your spirit becomes alive in a way it never was before. Your spirit and God's Spirit communicate. Your spirit knows God. Your spirit belongs to God.
Your spirit is invisible, but it's the most real part of you. You can't see your spirit. You can't touch your spirit. But it's more real than your body. It's more real than your thoughts and feelings. It's the essence of who you are. Your spirit is what lasts. Your spirit is what goes to heaven. Your spirit is who you'll be forever.
How They Work Together
Spirit, Soul, and Body Are Designed to Work as One
Your spirit, soul, and body are connected. They work together. Here's how:
Your SPIRIT
The Engine
The power source. What gives life. Should be leading.
Your SOUL
The Dashboard
The interface. Submitted to spirit.
Your BODY
The Car
The vehicle. Submitted to both.
But here's what happens with most people: they have it backwards. They live for their body — prioritizing physical pleasure or comfort. Or they live for their soul — prioritizing thoughts and feelings, saying "follow your heart," making decisions based on emotions.
But when you understand that your spirit is the real you, everything changes. You stop living for your body. You stop being ruled by your emotions. Instead, you let your spirit lead. You feed your spirit with God's Word. You listen to your spirit. You follow your spirit. And your spirit leads your soul, and your soul guides your body.
This Is Everything
Why Understanding This Changes Your Life
If you think you're just your BODY
- – You'll be afraid of aging
- – You'll be obsessed with appearance
- – You'll think your worth is based on physical ability
- – You'll be devastated when your body gets weak or sick
- – You'll make decisions based on physical pleasure
If you think you're just your SOUL
- – You'll be ruled by your emotions
- – You'll make destructive decisions based on how you feel
- – You'll never have stability
- – You'll follow your heart into disaster
- – You'll be constantly confused about who you are
When you understand you are SPIRIT, SOUL, and BODY
- – You'll know that the real you is eternal
- – You'll make decisions based on truth, not feeling
- – You'll have a foundation that doesn't shift
- – Your worth won't be based on appearance or emotions
- – You'll know who you really are
The Transformation
Here's something beautiful about the water metaphor: Water can be ice. Water can be liquid. Water can be steam. But it's always water. The molecules don't change. The essence doesn't change. Just the form changes.
You are the same way.
Right now, you're in your body. Your body is like ice — solid, visible, temporary. But that doesn't change who you are. One day, when you die, your spirit will leave your body. Your body will be like ice that melts away. But you will still be you. And one day, when Jesus comes, He'll raise your body — a glorified, eternal, perfect, transformed body.
But through all those changes, you are still you. Your spirit — the real you — remains. This is the hope of the Christian. This is why we don't have to fear death. This is why we don't have to live enslaved to our bodies or our emotions. We know who we really are.
A Prayer for You
Father, I'm praying for everyone reading this who doesn't yet understand what they really are.
I pray that You would open their eyes to see themselves as You see them — as spirits made in Your image, not just bodies, not just emotions and thoughts, but eternal beings connected to You.
I pray that they would stop being enslaved to their bodies. I pray that they would stop being ruled by their emotions. I pray that they would discover their spirit — the real them — and let that spirit lead their lives.
I pray that they would understand that they are eternal. That the real them will live forever. That their worth is not based on their appearance or their feelings, but on the fact that they are made in Your image.
And I pray that they would begin to live like they believe this. That they would prioritize their spirit. That they would feed their spirit with Your Word. That they would listen to their spirit. That they would let their spirit lead.
In Jesus's name, I'm asking. Amen.
The Foundation Is Set
You are three things:
SPIRIT
The real you
Eternal, made in God's image, connected to Him
SOUL
Your mind, will, emotions
How you interact with this world
BODY
Temporary housing
Important but not eternal — to be raised and glorified
You are like water: Body like ICE (solid, visible, temporary). Soul like LIQUID (flowing, interactive, here and now). Spirit like STEAM (invisible, eternal, rising toward heaven).
This is the foundation. Understanding this changes everything.
Now that you know what you are, you can start living like who you are.
